Today we are working on building a refurbished 14th generation Dell PowerEdge R640 for a client. This server came with two 240GB SATA drives and four SAS drives. Luckily, we got a great deal and the system was just built a few months ago in April of 2020, so we are hoping these drives have plenty of life left in them. Of course, we want to squeeze as much storage space out of them as possible, so we decided to install a Dell BOSS-S1 card. This inexpensive addition will allow us to install our operating system on two M.2 drives in a RAID-1 configuration. The card supports three types of drives, and we chose the Intel 240GB option. Now, when comparing the total cost of the BOSS card and M.2 drives as opposed to purchasing more 2.5" disks, we see a huge savings. Whereas each 2.5" drive could cost $400 or more, this solution cost us around $400 in total. Even better, we are really happy that all 10 drive bays are now available for storage drives that can be configured or reconfigured as needed in the future without touching our base ESXi installation. The video is not great quality due to the camera refusing to autofocus during the recording, however it is our hope that it may help someone struggling with their installation. We review our favorite server, the Dell PowerEdge R640. The Dual socket motherboard can accommodate Intel Silver, Gold, or Platinum processors with up to 28 cores each (with current firmware). With 24 DIMM slots it can, with a dual-processor configuration, have a maximum of 12TB of RAM. The chassis provides dual power supplies and a range of Quad 3.5" drives, 8 or 10 2.5" drives. The drives can be traditional SATA or SAS mechanical drives or SSDs. The configuration can also accommodate M.2 NVMe drives. A daughtercard provides space for a Quad network interface card (NIC), such as an Intel or Broadcom with 10Gbe copper or fiber connectivity. Additional configurations are available through add-on cards such as the fiber Intel card seen in this video. These servers are rock solid, building on the durability and reputation of the previous generations, namely the PowerEdge R630 and the PowerEdge R620 before that. Thank you for watching! Dell EMC PowerEdge R640 Server Overview | The R640 is an enterprise 1U server packing a powerful punch. In our video, we will review the general fundamentals of the PowerEdge R640 as well as show you how to properly configure & install your memory. For starters, the R640 is part of the impressive Dell 14th Generation family. This is the next gen to the very popular Dell PowerEdge R630 server. One of the big improvements will be the CPUs. Dell EMC R640’s are powered by dual Intel Scalable processors such as Silver 4100 series, Gold 5100 & 6100 series as well as Platinum 8100 series. LGA3647 socket. There are 24 DIMM slots supporting DDR4 memory. This is the second generation of DDR4 based servers from Dell now with faster speeds. The Dell R640 has 4 different chassis styles. 4 Bay LFF. 8 Bay SFF. 10 Bay SFF. 10 Bay NVMe SFF. The Dell EMC PowerEdge R640 can operate with three types of memory: ECC Registered (RDIMM), Load Reduced (LRDIMM) or Intel Optane Memory. ECC Reg and Load Reduced DDR4 are the more common options. Intel Optane Memory is a new technology. ECC Registered will have size options of 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, 32GB and up to 64GB. Unfortunately 128GB ECC Reg DIMMs will not work. Max configuration with ECC Reg will be (24 x 64GB) DDR4 PC4 3200MHz Server Memory. With Load Reduced, however, you can use 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, 32GB, 64GB and up to 128GB. Max configuration with LRDIMMs will be 3TB (24 x 128GB) DDR4 PC4 3200MHz Server Memory. Speed options are the same: 2133MHz, 2400MHz, 2666MHz, 2933MHz or 3200MHz. With Intel Optane, the DIMMs sizes are massive. 128GB, 256GB or 512GB. Incredibly impressive. Speeds are a little slower at 2133MHz, 2400MHz and 2666MHz. You can load 12 of the DIMM slots with 512GB DIMMs. You cannot load all 24 slots with Intel Optane. Only 12 slots. And you must you the start of the memory channel for each Optane module. You can mix the Intel Optane Modules with LRDIMMs. Meaning the max would be (12 x 512GB) Intel Optane + (12 x 128GB) LRDIMM for a total max of of RAM! Wow! There are two processors and each processor controls twelve DIMM slots. There are six memory channels per processor. This means there are to two DIMM slots per memory channel. Dell has conveniently color coded and labeled all the DIMM slots. This will be very helpful to properly install your memory upgrades. Always install modules in the first slot of the memory channel. The first slot of every memory channel starts with white, then black.
