If you're wondering what is the difference between these 4 cameras, make sure to check this comparison before doing a purchase decision. Which one have you tried? What is your experience with these cameras? Do you own any of them? The GH4 was released in 2014 and still kicks it. Still a good choice in 2021? let's find out! The Gh5s was released in 2018, which is a cinema version of the beloved GH5. This camera had dual native ISO, a better sensor but the IBIS. The Lumix S1 was released in 2019. The first full-frame camera from Panasonic. A stunning camera that still holds its ground against newer cameras. This camera came as a trio, the S1, the S1R for photographers and the S1H for cinematographers. The S1 is a hybrid between the two, really. This camera could challenge an ARRI when it comes to color rendition. The Lumix BGH1 was a surprise. A cube camera in the likes of the Z-Cam and RED Komodo. This box is in fact a re-housed GH5s with an improved Venus engine (CPU), more codec flavours and high versatility and connectivity. Bgh1 - Mov all-i 10bit 422 4kDCI Vlog-L I've wanted to do this test for a while now but only just got a portable power solution sorted. It's a very minimal grade, not perfect but good enough to compare these 2 great cameras. NOTES - Regarding the blown highlights. The correct thing to do regarding the bgh1 was to expose better for the highlights as a few people have mentioned. I will do a more controlled test in the future. I'm personally not offended by making mistakes. This box-style digital cinema camera features a M4/3 sensor, an MFT lens mount, and a wide 13-stop dynamic range to accommodate extreme changes in light. It records video with resolutions up to 4K60 and incorporates VariCam Look workflows such as V-Log L and Cinelike, dual-native ISO using its Venus Engine, anamorphic support, advanced AF (autofocus), numerous remote and power options, and it supports HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) color for vivid imagery to aid professional color grading. There are many features packed into this tiny form that make it the go-to production camera in any mobile and multicamera production environment. The BGH1 provides multiple ways to record your footage to high data rate files in the ALL-Intra Long GOP, MOV, and MP4 recording formats with and codecs. The camera supports unlimited recording time and allows you to record 10-bit 4:2:2 video using the camera's dual SD card slots. It can output up to 4K via the HDMI 2.0 output, or you can output up to 1080p resolution via 3G-SDI. The camera allows you to output via HDMI and 3G-SDI simultaneously, so you can use one signal for monitoring and the other for recording. It also supports recording at variable frame rates up to 1080p240 for high-quality slow-motion video. Custom 3D LUTs can be uploaded into the camera using the SD card slots. The BGH1 is also an ideal camera for multicamera environments, not only because it's highly mobile, but it includes timecode and genlock BNC ports, so you can sync up with other cameras to make syncing in post-production easy. Its RJ45 Gigabit LAN port allows you to sync with other networked BGH1 cameras, manage the camera settings and functions, and even perform direct IP streaming with a future firmware update. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth functionality are also integrated for monitoring, configuration, and control via a smartphone or tablet using the LUMIX Sync app. Another function integrated into the BGH1 is a USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-C input to control the camera with the LUMIX Tether app, which allows you to capture still images and control up to 12 BGH1 cameras. There is also a LANC input for an additional camera control option with an optional external controller. Audio features include high-grade 48 kHz/24-bit LPCM format, an integrated stereo microphone, a mic input, and a headphone output. The optional DMW-XLR1 XLR adapter can be utilized using the camera's integrated hot shoe, allowing you to record with professional microphones. Its compact form measures less than 4" square and weighs only 1.2 lb, so it can be used on gimbals or drones for high-quality stabilized footage. Its internal fan keeps the camera cool during long shoots, and its aluminum and magnesium housing provides protection and adds to the cooling factor. It also features four 1/4"-20 mounting threads for mounting on a plate, cage, or tripod mount. With today’s increased demand for streaming in addition to traditional broadcasting, the LUMIX BGH1 provides a versatile solution in the form of an easy-to-use expandable camera that can be used in multi-camera, drone, IP remote control and live-streaming environments. PROFESSIONAL-LEVEL VIDEO QUALITY ACHIEVED BY HIGH SENSITIVITY AND WIDE DYNAMIC RANGE The LUMIX BGH1 integrates a Live MOS Sensor with Dual Native ISO technology and a Venus Engine. Dual Native ISO technology seamlessly utilises two circuits to create two separate native ISO settings, which is used in Panasonic professional Varicam models. Normally, noise increases as sensitivity rises with a single native ISO image sensor, however, an image sensor with Dual Native ISO minimises noise generation by choosing an optimal circuit to use according to the sensitivity before gain processing. As a result, the BGH1 is capable of a maximum ISO 51200 high sensitivity recording. The LUMIX BGH1 enables 4:2:0 10-bit C4K/4K 60p / 50p internal video recording. It records video with a designated gamma curve compatible with ITU-R , and you can now choose Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG) in Photo Style. A low-bit-rate recording mode C4K/4K HEVC/ for HLG is also available. The V-Log L featuring log characteristics with 13 stops of wide dynamic range is pre-installed. It is also capable of C4K/4K 4:2:2 10-bit output via HDMI. The VFR (Variable Frame Rate) lets users record overcranked / undercranked video in C4K/4K (60 fps, maximum slower in 24p) and FHD (240 fps, maximum 10x slower in 24p)*. The minimum frame rate for quick motion video is 2 fps. * The angle of view is reduced when the frame rate is set to 201 fps. USER CONVENIENCE IN FILM PRODUCTION AND SIMPLE SCALABILITY WITH EXTERNAL DEVICES The LUMIX BGH1 benefits from a new heat dispersion structure to achieve unlimited video recording. The body frame is composed of aluminum and magnesium alloy, making the camera both durable and lightweight. The LUMIX BGH1 is a compact box-style camera complying with Power over Ethernet+ (PoE+) protocols. Control over maximum of 12 LUMIX BGH1 cameras*1 is available using Panasonic PC software ‘LUMIX Tether for Multicam’*². With a future firmware update, it will also support wired IP streaming (RTP/RTSP). In addition to a USB 3.1 Type-C port, it is also equipped with a 3G-SDI and a HDMI Type-A terminal, which can be used for simultaneous output. Furthermore, Genlock IN and Timecode IN/OUT functions which enable multi-angle synchronised video recording are available, allowing the user to build a scalable system with external monitors, rigs and gimbals supplied from other manufacturers.
