The HP ProBook 630 G8. A laptop I had never heard of until it entered my studio a few weeks ago, and I must say I don’t know why. This laptop is thin and light, has the best trackpad I’ve used on a laptop from an windows machine, and has well above the average battery life capabilities. ►⏩►⏩ Check specs and pricing in the links below… 💻 HP ProBook 630 G8 ( - Commission Earned ) Not only are we going to look at the usability and build quality of this laptop, but I have also taken the HP ProBook G8 and run over 14+ benchmark tests to create the ultimate ProBook-focused review. We are going to look at video & photo editing, design, and more... Thin, light, and durable. The ProBook 630 is something to reckon with. The all-aluminum chassis is fitted to precision. Everything about this laptop really shouts premium. Its lovely beveled edges, single hinge for opening and closing the screen, and speakers positioned on the top of the keyboard deck make this laptop stand out. Not many devices in this form factor take thought of the elements that really matter to a small on-the-go productivity workstation. But what is awesome is that it feels so solid, while being so light. Not the easiest feat to accomplish. The 45Wh battery should give you roughly 10 hours of web browsing battery life and 6 - 7 hours of design and video editing battery life. Audio is an important experience, especially when you’re on the go and you forget your headphones. To me there is nothing worse than trying to design or edit photos with bad audio. Whether I am listening to music, a sermon from one of my favorite pastors, or catching up on Akimbo for Seth Godin, good audio is crucial and the ProBook delivers! This laptop is 85% perfect. Here is the first 12.5% why it's not perfect and in a second I’ll show you the second 12.5%. According to my tests the ProBook 630 with the FHD display can reach 295 nits at full screen brightness and has a color gamut range of 68% sRGB - 50% Adobe RGB - 50% DCI-P3 at an average Delta-E rating 0f . If you’re planning on this being your on the go creator workstation that color gamut range is a little sad. But with a color accurate monitor at your home office or work office it would make a stellar combination with this laptop. Type-C USB 3.2 Gen 2 x2 Type-A USB 3.2 Gen 2 HDMI Port SC (SmartCard) Slot Headphone Jack The second 12.5% comes at the absence of an SD card slot. Being out on a photo or video shoot it is often very nice to have an SD card slot built right into your laptop, which is not the case here. You can see the ports coming up on the screen now, which as you see is a good selection of ports, but misses that creator coveted SD card slot. The ProBook 630 I’m reviewing comes with: CPU: Intel 11th Gen Core i7-1165G7 (4 Cores 8 Threads) GPU: Intel Iris Xe RAM: 16GB DDR4 Storage: 512B NVMe SSD In the Photoshop benchmarks the HP ProBook 630 G8 is sitting near the lower end of my midrange scores capturing a 505 in the Puget Systems Photoshop Benchmark. Looking at the other laptops surrounding the ProBook you will see the Acer Spin 5, 2020 MacBook Pro with its Intel i5 processor, and the MSI Modern 15. Note that these are all capable laptops in Photoshop, they are just not going to impress the neighbor kids when it comes to benchmark show-offs. The HP ProBook 630 G8 is a laptop that comes out of the box on-the-go ready for 1080p video editors, photographers, and designers. With a solid 10 hours of battery life for productivity tasks and 6 - 7 hours of design and editing battery life it will keep you off the charger quite a while. The Keyboard and trackpad are truly incredible making this laptop so comfortable to use. Due note that there is one GLARING reason I still think creative professionals will want to pick up the MacBook Pro M1 over the HP ProBook 630 G8, join me to find out. ►⏩►⏩ Check specs and pricing in the links below… 💻 HP ProBook 630 G8 ( - Commission Earned ) 💻 MacBook Pro 13in M1 ( - Commission Earned ) Windows has finally brought us a worthy competitor to the MacBook Pro M1 (Insert raging comments below). While there are no perfect laptops, there are also no perfect opinions, so this is indeed my opinion which I will back up with specs, benchmark tests, and build quality assessments. Alright so we have two all-aluminum laptops built for the mid budget category. We are going to find out which one will better serve your use cases. First and foremost, chassis design overall goes to the MacBook Pro. It has become the defecto gold standard (so to speak) as all that is good and beautiful. The ProBook is the same thickness as the MacBook Pro M1 at inches thick but weighs roughly a half pound less at Lbs compared to the MacBook Pro’s 3.0 Lbs Another part of the ProBook design I really like is the ledge they created for your fingers to grip the screen to open and close it. The top and bottom bezel of the ProBook are slightly angled in creating a perfect ledge for you fingers to grip the screen and pull it open easily. This could go easily overlooked and I love when company’s design in this way. Well done HP. The screen can also open to 180 degrees whereas the MacBook Pro cannot. The HP ProBook Keyboard is my preferred keyboard between these two. It is very snappy, responsive and quiet. The keys are very stable and the soft-touch materials are more soft-touchy than the MacBook Pro. The MacBook Pro’s keyboard is good, but the ProBook definitely stands out here. Both the HP ProBook and the MacBook Pro M1 come with all in one trackpads with the click built in. The HP ProBook has a manual click whereas the M1 totes Apple’s vibration click. So basically the trackpad isn’t manually activated by the click from the mechanism moving. Rather the amount of force that is applied to the trackpad causes a vibration that feels like a click. The ProBook 630 comes with a much wider variety of ports. So if you’re not into that dongle life than the ProBook will be the better choice. The ProBook 630 comes with: Type-C USB 3.2 Gen 2 x2 Type-A USB 3.2 Gen 2 HDMI Port SC (SmartCard) Slot Headphone Jack And the MacBook Pro M1 comes with: x2 USB-C 3.1 (DisplayPort) Mic/headphone combo The HP ProBook 630 G8 I am reviewing comes with: CPU: Intel 11th Gen Core i7-1165G7 (4 Cores 8 Threads) GPU: Intel Iris Xe RAM: 16GB DDR4 Storage: 512B NVMe SSD Whereas the MacBook Pro M1 comes with: CPU: Apple M1 (8 Cores 8 Threads) GPU: 8 Core GPU + 16 Core Neural Engine RAM: 8GB DDR4 Storage: 512GB SSD The ProBook 630 only falls slightly behind the MacBook Pro M1 in Photoshop. The ProBook 630 scored a 505 while the MacBook Pro M1 scored a 565. Looking at my charts you can see that the ProBook 630 is actually out-performing the current MacBook Pro 13 inch with the Intel Core i5 offering. Which by the way is a well suited laptop for creators tasks. So, that the ProBook 630 outperforms it is a good sign. If you are going to be playing back and editing 4k footage on one of these two laptops then the MacBook Pro M1 gets double the smoothness while editing. But to be honest, while the MacBook Pro can handle 4k video editing on a single clip basis, I would recommend both of these laptops for advanced 1080p before I would recommend them for 4k. So with that in mind, if you purchase the ProBook 630, just note that you will need to shoot and edit 1080p, which in my opinion is totally fine. I currently shoot and edit everything 1080p. Plus, did you know that phones are only HD (1080p). So nearly everyone watching your edits will not know any different. If you’re looking for a laptop that is highly color accurate, all-aluminum, handles Photoshop in the top of its category, is capable of 4k video editing, and destroys simulated benchmarking tools (just in case you want to impress the neighbor kids), then bi-golly you better go for the MacBook Pro M1. It was created for employees of corporations and small and medium-sized companies. HP ProBook 640 thanks to its small size, efficient processor, good housing and battery life up to 12 hours is a real mobile device, it will definitely prove itself on the go. I’ve been using the Acer Swift 3 in my studio and day to day work flow for over a year now. It’s thin, light, has great battery life, but there were two things I did not like about it that another laptop that recently arrived in my studio. I’m talking about the HP ProBook 630 G8. ►⏩►⏩ Check specs and pricing in the links below… 💻 HP ProBook 630 G8 ( - Commission Earned ) 💻 Acer Swift 3 ( - Commission Earned ) Let's talk about it, the HP ProoBook 630 G8 Vs the Acer Swift 3, which one is right for you? The Acer Swift 3 and the HP ProBook 630 G8 come in a smaller form factor but have different screen sizes. The Acer Swift 3 has slightly thinner bezels and overall a slightly bigger screen at 14 inches. Whereas the HP ProBook comes with a 13.3 inch display. Regarding the aluminum build quality you will find both laptops nearly the same density and build quality. The Swift 3 has more rounded edges than the ProBook. I like the ProBooks sharper edges, they won’t cut you or anything of that nature, but it makes the ProBook have a little more aggressive professional look over the Swift 3. The Acer Swift 3 is inches thick at Lbs and the HP ProBook 630 G8 is inches thick at Lbs. The Keyboard deck is where things get real easy to identify a winner. The ProBook has an incredible soft-touch key caps and very responsive keys. This keyboard is the same keyboard that can be found on the HP Omen which may in fact be my current favorite keyboard in the market. It is quiet, the keys are incredibly comfortable to the touch, and each key is extremely stable giving you a satisfying snappy response when activated. The reason this is so and a perfect comparison is the Swift 3 because this is one area it is lacking. When I slide my finger back and forth over the key of the Swift 3 there is a lot of wobble. So when I hold my finger over the edge of the key I can already begin to feel it depress. So whenever I go to press the key it feels mushy and does not pop back up quickly. Whereas on the HP ProBook keyboard, the keys are very stable. There is no mushy feeling when my fingers are resting on the keys and when I push the key down to activate it there is a firm even resistance to my press. When released it snaps back quickly and the keypress is very satisfying. The trackpad is also an area that I have not necessarily been a fan of the past year using the Swift 3. I’ve noticed it misses clicks from time to time, is not great at dragging and dropping objects, plus it also feels slightly mushy, similar to the key caps. The HP ProBook on the other hand is responsive and snappy, has not had noticeable miss clicks, and drags and drops objects well. It is again very reminiscent of the HP Omen, however slightly smaller and does not have that epic tacky feeling like the Omen trackpad does. The HP ProBook 630 can reach a color gamut range of 68% sRGB - 50% Adobe RGB - 50% DCI-P3. The Acer Swift 3 can a color gamut range of 64% sRGB - 47% Adobe RGB - 47% DCI-P3. The Swift 3 comes with: Type-A USB 3.2 Gen 1 (Power-off charging) Type-A USB 2.0 USB-C 3.1 (DisplayPort + USB charging) HDMI 2.0 Mic/headphone combo And the HP ProBook 630 comes with: Type-C USB 3.2 Gen 2 (DisplayPort + USB charging) x2 Type-A USB 3.2 Gen 2 (Power-off charging) HDMI 2.0 SC (SmartCard) Slot Mic/headphone combo The Acer Swift 3 I am reviewing comes with: CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 4700U (8 Cores 8 Threads) GPU: AMD Radeon 7 Graphics (Renoir) RAM: 8GB DDR4 Storage: 512GB NVMe SSD Whereas the HP ProBook 630 comes with: CPU: Intel 11th Gen Core i7-1165G7 (4 Cores 8 Threads) GPU: Intel Iris Xe RAM: 16GB DDR4 Storage: 512GB NVMe SSD Both of these laptops would make really solid 1080p video editing laptops with medium to complex projects. I think these are great laptops to get started on video editing passion projects and YouTube. I don’t recommend them for 4k. I ran both of these laptops through my 4k benchmarking tests and they struggled to perform at a suitable level to get my recommendation. Taking my first look at the HP ProBook 450 and 630 G8 for creative professionals such as graphic designers, artists, and photographers. Catch the full review in the description below once it is posted. The 11th Gen i7 and i5 processor in each of these laptops is great and I look forward to taking them through the full benchmarks soon. The ProBooks really impressed my right out of the gate. both the i7-1165G7 and i5-1135G7 came out swinging with solid photoshop scores and decent color accuracy for the price point.
