The UAG Metropolis for the OG iPad Pro was my #1 case. It isn’t anymore. Why? Because the standout feature of the old version was the removable flap which allowed you to use your Smart Keyboard in a pinch. This new case doesn’t have that feature anymore. In fact, having the cover permanently attached to the case has resulted in Monty giving the case a nickname, Flappy. Honestly, if you’re not planning on getting a keyboard or an Apple pencil, the UAG case might be worth considering. BUT if you are planning on drawing and typing away, this case just doesn’t have what it takes. Get the Urban Armor Gear Metropolis on Amazon! And when we review enough products, we’ll do a comparison video. No shortcuts. We do it right. The iPad Pro fits tightly in this case and when the cover is wrapped around the case, it feels rock solid. It won’t slide around easily on any surface and the case will add HOW MUCH % to the case in weight and bulk. It’s bulkier than the Otterbox Symmetry 360 that I last reviewed for the iPad Pro. The latch attaches magnetically and your Apple pencil has a small holder to keep it in place. The cover will also put your iPad to sleep and wake it when it open. If you are planning on getting a screen protector, you’ll need to make sure you get one that doesn’t come close to the edge of the device. My last screen protector, the Tech Armor Ballistic glass didn’t fit with this case though the Spigen GlasTr that I have on this iPad will. The Metropolis is going to wear well over time as the textured which may scratch over time, aren’t found on the corners of the iPad so the occasional drop isn’t going to scuff it up. Overall, the texture of the case is awesome. There’s a lot of design quirks on the case like holes that look like you can run a lanyard through and fake screws. I’ve been a bit fan of the entire Metropolis lineup because of the finish that they use. Oddly enough, it was called FrogSkin, the last time I reviewed it. It isn’t anymore. The power button is covered though the volume buttons are not. The port cover looks deceptively large BUT the only cable I could use the case with was the Apple cable. Not many of my third party cables worked with the case. Two-handed usage with this product was sub-par. Why? Because of the damn flap. On the old version, at least when I got annoyed with it, I could remove it. I had no issues using the pseudo pro cameras or the screen. In fact, the only saving grace about this case is that the viewing angles aren’t set so you can go pick your favourite angle as long as it’s between 110 and 140 degree. This is in contrast to the two viewing angles you have on the Spigen Tough Armor Pro (we’re reviewing this case next). Standing the case up in portrait mode is tentative at best BUT it’s still possible. This orientation is very handy for Facetiming Monty’s g-parents. When it comes to extra versatility, the Metropolis falls on its face. I’ve come to appreciate the modularity of the iPad as I bounce between a keyboard to writing many times a day. Apple’s stock accessories are really good for that. BUT with the Metropolis, you can’t do that easily. The case is annoying to take off and re-install. This will really only matter for people who want to use a keyboard AND if you are that enamored with this case, you could always just get a normal BT keyboard and mouse to go with it. And unlike the Otterbox Symmetry, if you’re not using an Apple Pencil, the magnetic latch on the front adjust so that you don’t have extra latch. On the Metropolis, you get extra latch. It’s odd having this loose piece just hanging out there. When it comes to protection, the case is rated MIL-SPEC 810G which means it’s suppose to protect your iPad from 4ft drops. That’s it. So don’t drop it any higher than hip/stomach height. AND if you do, know that the oversized corners are going to be enough to maybe stop your giant pane of glass from bending. The cover is going to offer enough protection for the occasional face first drop and dust and debris shouldn’t be an issue as the case fits the iPad tightly. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subscribe to stay in the loop! Is the UAG Scout annoying to use? That’s the first question I had when I first saw the product. Will the bulk make my iPad too heavy to use? Was the second question I had after getting the product. And the third question went along the lines of: Is the UAG Scout with a Smart Keyboard Folio going to be better to use than something like the Logitech Slim Folio Pro? And how about protection? If the answers in my video satisfy your desire to buy it, use my links! Amazon US: Amazon CA: Amazon UK: Amazon DE: For the impatient, the UAG Scout is a good addon IF you already have the Smart Keyboard Folio and need a bit of protection every once in a while. The fit of the UAG Scout on my iPad isn’t bad. It looks clumsier than it actually is. To get everything to fit properly, you need to slide one end of the smart folio case into the Scout, then snap in the other side before installing your iPad. The iPad is held in place by several long rubber edges. The iPad in this video has a Spigen GlasTr screen protector on it and it just fits. My tech Armor screen protector wouldn’t fit in this case. The cover of the Smart Keyboard actually snaps into the top of the case which prevents it from flopping around. That’s a nice touch UAG. The finish of the case is quite smooth so it will slide around easier than I’d like it to. BUT it doesn’t really go anywhere when you put an iPad in the Scout. Removing your iPad is fairly simple as you need to pull back on the case a bit to pop one side of the out. There’s a good chance that you’ll pop out the smart keyboard as well so make sure you make sure everything is in place when you install your iPad again. So the answer to question #2 which was “will the bulk make my iPad too heavy to use?” is yes. It will. BUT you can take it out of the case relatively easily so it might not be too much of an annoyance for some. From a wear and tear perspective, the case is going to age better than the UAG Metropolis. You’re not going to lose parts of this case by scratching it. When it comes to functionality, the volume buttons are exposed so they are easy to use BUT the power button is covered and is tough to press. That’s surprising to me because UAG’s usually pretty good with buttons but not on the scout. There’s an Apple pencil holder so if you lose your Apple Pencil like I have because I haven’t’ used in weeks because the Tip broke, the case is going to look funny. It feels like that hook could be use to hang your iPad in the shower right beside your loofa. I had no issues with camera access and the port cutout is large enough to use non-Apple cables. Now the standout feature of the UAG Scout is the fact that you can use it in conjunction with the Smart Keyboard Folio. I feel that the old Metropolis was inspiration for the UAG Scout. BUT does it make your iPad with a Smart Keyboard annoying to use? That’s the first question I had. The answer is sort of. Let’s start with iPad all buttoned up in the case. The first thing you have to do is pull hard enough to pop the folio cover front he latches. Second of all you need to flex the case a bit harder in order to setup the Smart Keyboard. These two interactions with your iPad are very noticeable with the UAG Scout. Now if you’re playing a game or reading news on your couch, you’ll want to pull the iPad out of the case. As I already mentioned, the smart folio case is going to pop out. So instead of having easily snapping your keyboard to your iPad, you have to go through all these little obstacles in order to use your iPad. BUT if you can past those mild annoyances, having that extra protection might be worth it. Is this setup any better than the Logitech Slim Folio Pro? I’ll that question after I talk about the protection of the case. When it comes to protection, UAG claims that it offers MilSTd 810G protection. The corners of the case are between thick which is as thick as the corners found on the UAG Monarch. Now from my understanding, MilSTD 810G for a device of this size is 4 ft which means it’s going to offer enough protection to protect your iPad from a fall from a countertop which is how I dented my iPad Pro 11-inch. So sad. Honestly, the only time I would go and recommend a UAG Scout is IF you already own the Smart Keyboard Folio AND NEED to add a bit of protection to the setup every once in a while. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subscribe to stay in the loop! Pros: * Provides military grade protection for your iPad Pro 9.7. * Easy to install and remove. * Very lightweight for its size. * Pleasantly grippy. * Magnetic clasp for folio cover keeps folio securely closed. * Storage loop for Apple Pencil is great if you have an Apple Pencil, but takes up no room if you don’t. * Case supports auto sleep/wake. * Can be used with or without removable folio cover. * Provides adjustable viewing angles. * Great for tabletop use or for reading in bed. * Smart connector is exposed when cover is removed, allowing it to work with Apple Smart Keyboard. Cons: * Attaching and detaching folio cover is a little tricky and best done with the iPad Pro not in the case. * A bit bulky, but quite lightweight. The UAG Metropolis is available directly from UAG as well as from many retailers. It has an MSRP of $ and comes in three colors: Cobalt, Magma and Black.
