I have seen a number of trends come and go, however, one has been around longer than most and that is 10Gigabit ethernet (10Gbe). 10GBe as a network connection is not new, it has been around for years, but largely considered too ‘enterprise’ in cost or implementation to adopt for most users. However now in 2018 we see a significant leap in the NAS market by buyers entering the 10GBe market and this is for two key reasons. First, the size of data has grown considerably, most mobile phones take pictures now that exceed 10MB each and factors like 4K recording mean that you could be creating 1GB files every 10mins of for captured footage on average. The second reason that 10GBe has exploded in popularity this year is that it is so much more affordable now. Brands like Netgear, TP-Link and LinkSys have incredibly cost-effective 10GBe switches to buy, as well as QNAP and Buffalo both producing their own cost-effective 10Gbe Switches too. Thanks to this increase in demand for 10G, the result is that NAS brands that feature 10GBe devices have become very popular indeed. Does the New Nimbustor 4 NAS from Asustor Perform? As long as I have been in the NAS industry, I can say with confidence that there has been one single constant - gigabit ethernet (1Gbe) via copper (RJ45) has been present on every single device up to this point. From small little DLNA media NAS boxes, all the way upto enterprise-grade rackmounts, the humble 1Gbe port has always been there.  Even when a brand has included large 10Gbe ports, it has always been largely outnumbered by 1Gbe ports. This is understandable, the network market hugely features this default port, but with file sizes always getting bigger and increased access speeds being required, it is fair to say that 1Gbe is starting to look rather out of its depth. It is for this reason (or similar) that Asustor's newest generation of NAS drives for home and business in 2019/2020 have taken the very bold move of completely eliminating the 1Gbe RJ45 ports, and instead, making the jump to ports by default instead. I have already touched on this previously on the build-up to, and during, the Computex 2019 event - highlighting why this move into 2.5 gigabit ethernet is such a big, BIG deal, but today I finally have a Nimbustor 4 here in the office and am going work my way through it's hardware, it's software and how the new AS5304T NAS compares with likewise rivals units from Synology and QNAP. Today is the Hardware review and the main question I want to answer is whether the Nimbustor 4 is a gimmick or a genuine game-changing NAS server that will be the start of a new kind of network attached storage. Let's get to work. Pick Up your Asustor Nimbustor 4 AS5304T NAS from - ~69697 When I first unpacked the shipping container to get to the Nimbustor 4, I was pleasantly surprised by the retail packaging. I shouldn't be - Asustor has always been very graphical in their packaging, going to good lengths to detail what the units can do, the hardware specs, the software specs and generally creating a very appealing and engaging retail design. I often comment warmly on the attention many companies make on retail packaging, despite the fact these devices are almost always purchased from online stores (so by the time you see the packaging, you have already purchased it), it would be a dull, dull world indeed if everything arrived in default brown box packaging (do you hear me Synology?). Less about the fact it was going to feature 5Gbe, but more because the remarkably popular TVS-x72XT series was going to arrive in a version that did not include Thunderbolt3 or 10GBe. Despite these two forms of NAS connectivity being heavily supported by QNAP NAS, there were ALOT of users who wanted a NAS like these, but planned on focusing on the INTERNAL capabilities and could not budget/justify the TVS-672XT. So, now, with the release of the TVS-672N, we have the means to access the 8th Gen Intel CPU, NVMe SSD Bays, DDRR Memory, HDMI and more, and at a much more attractive price point to many users. However, the other reason we were so interested was that the TVS-672N was the latest NAS Drive to benefit from QNAP's current moves into 5Gbe Network connectivity. This connection, that is physically compatible with existing 1Gbe and 10Gbe copper networks, arrives as an affordable middle point for users to gradually scale up their external network speeds, along with the compatibility of QNAP's new USB3-to-5Gbe adapter for Mac, means that it is considerably easier to make the jump to 5Gbe on all your network devices, than it is for 10Gbe. So, the question is - is the QNAP TVS-672N a NAS that answers to growing demand, or is it too experimental for some and still not budgetable? We Discuss the 2019 Release 10Gbe and NVMe Combo Card from QNAP - It desperately needs an update to PCIe Gen3 or Gen4. One nice feature we saw was the ability to use this card in everything from QNAP NAS with QTier to a ASUS Threadripper 3960X workstation to a Supermicro 1U server, to a HPE MicroServer. QNAP did a great job making this a general-purpose architecture. Performance-wise, this solution offers a unique capability of adding network and storage to a single card. Storage performance can be labeled as NVMe, but is far from the performance we see in native PCIe 3.0 x4 slots. As the card is loaded, that performance drops even more. It seems to offer more than simply checking boxes that a NAS can support NVMe and 10Gbase-T but it is not the same as a PCIe Gen3 solution. At under $250 the card is not exactly inexpensive. Purchasing a 10Gbae-T adapter plus a dual M.2 PCIe card (without a switch) can be done for a little over half of that amount.
