Make Your Synology NAS 5Gbe Equipped with the QNAP USB-to-5GbE Adapter For those of you who have been considering (or have already purchased) a Synology NAS in the last year or so, one of the things that the brand has never really engaged in heavily is the idea of greater-than-gigabit connectivity at the diskstation level. There HAVE been a handful of 10Gbe equipped solutions that were either priced as enterprise solutions (eg DS1621xs+) Or were partnered with weaker CPUs (eg DS1817). Alongside this, many solutions at the desktop level have arrived with PCIe upgradability, allowing users to upgrade the 1GbE ports to something more substantial. However, last year QNAP released a new kind of network interface upgrade for NAS and PC, known as the QNA-UC5G1T USB to 5GbE adapter. Many (myself included) were looking forward to testing this out on a Synology NAS system, in order to allow even modest 2 and 4-Bay Diskstation systems to upgrade from 1Gbe-to-5Gbe just with a USB port. However, the Synology NAS system does not officially support the QNAP QNA-UC5G1T adapter. However, a smart user by the name of ‘bb-qq’ on github last year successfully created an unofficial Synology app/plugin for the Diskstation App Center that will install the necessary Aquantia driver to use this QNAP adapter on your Synology NAS. Today I want to show you how to add this adapter to your NAS and upgrade your Synology to 5Gbe (or more with more adapters and USB ports) without the need of a PCIe upgrade slot. Let’s go! This simple synology nas 5gbe hack although is completely unsupported by Synology; provides faster transfer speeds between my machines and my Synology DS918+ NAS. To achieve speeds above Gigabit I purchased a QNAP QNA-UC5G1T 5GbE nic USB 3.0 adapter and why you need multi gig ethernet to exceed the synology nas gigabit limitation. This adapter by QNAP is a multi gigabit adapter and supports 1GbE, and 5GbE speeds which works as a great synology nas 5gbe hack. Now if you don't have the infrastructure to run at full speed across multiple machines you could directly connect your NAS to your Synology DS918+ using a QNAP QNA-UC5G1T 5GbE nic USB 3.0 adapter on your computer as well as on your Synology DS918+ NAS for that one machine to have full speed to the NAS. This adapter uses a regular RJ45 connection but does require CAT6 or higher for reliable transmission for 5gbe RJ45 multi gig speeds and is limited to the speeds of the physical disks in the DS918+. Less about the fact it was going to feature 5Gbe, but more because the remarkably popular TVS-x72XT series was going to arrive in a version that did not include Thunderbolt3 or 10GBe. Despite these two forms of NAS connectivity being heavily supported by QNAP NAS, there were ALOT of users who wanted a NAS like these, but planned on focusing on the INTERNAL capabilities and could not budget/justify the TVS-672XT. So, now, with the release of the TVS-672N, we have the means to access the 8th Gen Intel CPU, NVMe SSD Bays, DDRR Memory, HDMI and more, and at a much more attractive price point to many users. However, the other reason we were so interested was that the TVS-672N was the latest NAS Drive to benefit from QNAP's current moves into 5Gbe Network connectivity. This connection, that is physically compatible with existing 1Gbe and 10Gbe copper networks, arrives as an affordable middle point for users to gradually scale up their external network speeds, along with the compatibility of QNAP's new USB3-to-5Gbe adapter for Mac, means that it is considerably easier to make the jump to 5Gbe on all your network devices, than it is for 10Gbe.
