So for example you can get them to backup your data to the cloud and scan the hard drives for errors and viruses - allowing your computer to focus on your work at hand. TS-453Be The cheapest NAS presented here is the TS-453Be which is great as a first NAS and unlike units from other manufacturers it contains a PCIe upgrade slot to allow you to install a SSD/10GBe expansion card when you need extra speed. TS-453Be: TVS-x72XT The current kings of NAS at the moment is the TVS-x72XT range containing the fastest connections built in and a powerful 8th gen Intel processor to handle the fastest performance - yes performance is improved with a better processor. TVS-872N: WHAT IS RAID RAID0 - Uses all drives to create one large storage space. RAID5 - Uses one of the drives for protection in case of drive failure - so you don't use all your data. RAID6 - Uses two of the drives for protection - better safety, slightly slower speeds. THUNDERBOLT 3 These NAS drives are easy to get up and running, however the hard drives in NAS systems are noisy and the current longest cables you can get are only 2 meters in length, so while it's great for temporary usage, I recommend using a 10GBe ethernet cable with a Thunderbolt 3 adapter instead - that way you get up to 100 meters in length. Cable: Adapter: 10GBe The current standard in performance speed, while you'll only get these speeds with 4 or more hard drives operating at RAID0, with a fast enough processor, it's a good idea to aim for these cables as they go up to 100 meters in length and as you grow out your system your speeds will improve. Cable: 10GBe to TB3 Adapter: thunderbolt+3+adapter WHY NOT A DAS? They hog your computers resources, only allow one connection at a time, and the cable length is limited so they can be a very noisy solution. WHICH HARD DRIVES? I've been using Seagate Ironwolf Pro drives for the past few years, they have large capacities at fast operating speeds. Seagate IronWolf Review: WIFI All NAS systems I've used require a direct connection to a router or a WIFI dongle to connect to the internet. Connecting to the internet is a security risk, however if used cautiously with good security practices, it is great for accessing a NAS from both over the Wifi or over the Internet when required. For starters the price, coming in the $600 Australian dollar range, it's competitively prices around the same (if not cheaper) than similar spec'd 4 bay NAS units from other brands. However, unlike other units, this one comes with a PCIe upgrade slot, allowing you to install a 10GBe and m.2 SSD upgrade card, multiplying the performance of this NAS through the typical 1/2GBe speeds you get from a NAS in this price bracket. Next up, the software is great, easy to setup, and filled with plenty of apps to customize the unit from automatic cloud backups, to Plex media serving, to karaoke... That's right it has 2 mic ports for karaoke. Finally, it's light, cool and portable, weighing in lighter than it's younger brother the TVS-472XT making it easier for transport on the go. On the negatives, unlike it's younger siblings in the TVS-x72XT range, it doesn't include Thunderbolt or 10GBe connections out of the box, and features as lower powered Celeron processor. In the event of an unexpected error, you can easily restore data from backed-up files on the cloud. The adapter worked out of the box on macOS, by default file transfer speeds from a 4 bay RAID0 IronWolf setup, was equivalent to the direct Thunderbolt 3 connection. Initially benchmarking applications ran at a slower speed of up to 600MB/s, however after editing the Network settings in System Preferences to support MTU jump frames, it started hitting over 1150MB/s. The device features a small fan which can be too noisy for quieter environments, however this noise can be mitigated by using a 2m thunderbolt 3 connection and pointing the fan outwards. I did test using the shorter provided TB3 cable and a longer 2M TB3 cable and there was no difference in performance. Overall, if you need a longer connection than a TB3 cable can provide, then this adapter can get you equivalent speeds at a much further range. QNAP TS-664, QM2-2P10G1TB, ASUS XG-C100C, 10GbE Ethernet Budget Setup with NO SWITCH, speed test In this video I test the QNAP TS-664 6 bay NAS with a QM2-2P10G1TB and PC with ASUS XG-C100C connected with a single cable without the need for a switch. A normal cable can be used it does not need to be a crossover cable the card can manage this itself. The connection is via an RJ45 lan cable, in this video I used an Amazon Basics Cat 7 ethernet cable, though you can use CAT 6 or CAT 5e cable which should both be fine over short distances but make sure to check distance supported by each depending on your setup. I also test the QNAP card with cache and find some interesting results when playing with the cache setup in different configurations, this includes the following cache setups: - 1 x NVME SSD single drive cache on QM2-2P10G1TB - 2 x NVME SSD RAID 1 cache on QM2-2P10G1TB - 2 x NVME SSD RAID 1 cache on, 1 SSD QM2-2P10G1TB and 1 SSD on the NAS NVME Slot.
