Supermicro X10DRH-C, X10DRH-CT & X10DRH-CLN4 motherboards inside the CSE-815 chassis - In this video, we will provide a simple and objective overview of the Supermicro X10DRH-C family of motherboards, specifically focus on Memory and Processors. We will dive into the different types of memory, DIMM sizes and speeds. We will touch on max memory installation capabilities. We will even physically install and configure the DIMMs and showcases some best practice tips and tricks along the way. On top of diving into the memory, we will review the compatible processors, and which CPUs we recommend for either low end or high end applications. The Supermicro X10DRH-C family of motherboards are E-ATX boards. These boards can be utilized in multiple chassis types such as rackmounts or towers. In this video, we are using the CSE-815, which is a 1U 4 Bay LFF chassis. Hope you enjoy Cloud Ninjas Supermicro server memory tutorial video on the X10DRH-C family of motherboards. Let's begin with the compatible memory options. Regardless of which type of motherboard - X10DRH-C, X10DRH-CT & X10DRH-CLN4 all utilize the exact same memory and Intel processors. From this point forward, I will refer to X10DRH-C family of motherboards, but please keep in mind all the same information pertains to X10DRH-CT & X10DRH-CLN4 as well. There are 16 DIMM slots operating on DDR4 memory. Several different speeds options are supported: 2133MT/s, 2400MT/s or 2666MT/s. Note 2666 will clock down to 2400MT/s speed. Memory DIMM capacity sizes supported include: 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, 32GB, 64GB or 128GB. There are two types of compatible memory: ECC Registered (RDIMM) and ECC Load Reduced (LRDIMM) server memory. We recommend ECC Registered server memory for lower DIMM sizes such as 4GB, 8GB or 16GB and we recommend Load Reduced server memory for higher DIMM sizes such as 32GB, 64GB or 128GB. Desktop memory is not supported. The max configuration for Supermicro X10DRH-C motherboard with ECC Registered is 1TB via 16 x 64GB DDR4 2400MT/s ECC Registered server memory. Whereas, Load Reduced Server memory will have twice the capacity! You can get 2TB on your Supermicro X10DRH-C with 16 x 128GB DDR4 2400MT/s ECC Load Reduced server memory. Now let's discuss the processors. There are two CPU sockets, which are an LGA2011-3 sockets. These boards are exclusively running on Intel processors and AMD does not have a compatible processor for this specific board. You can use a couple different types of Intel processor series with the Supermicro X10DRH-C family of motherboards. Intel Xeon E5-2600 V3 or V4 series. Cloud Ninjas recommends E5-2620v3, E5-2680v4 and E5-2690v4. There are a number of great options, we recommend using V4's. The X10DRH-C motherboard is a great option for a homelab server, virtualization environment or even a gaming server. See the main site article here: We take a look at a trio of Supermicro SuperBlade platforms. We last reviewed the SuperBlade platform in the Xeon E5 era back when it was a 7U solution. Now, the company has 4U, 6U, and 8U SuperBlade solutions. One may think they are simply different sizes, but it turns out that each system is tailored for specific applications. We take a look at each. Since there are no trade shows, we set up some time as the Silicon Valley shelter-in-place order eased to go see the new SuperBlade solutions. Since we are using Supermicro's demo room, they are helping film the footage, they are providing the servers, and have project managers available for this and some of the other servers we looked at, we are calling this sponsored content. This was the only way I could do my normal trade-show coverage and I retained complete editorial control over the video. I was testing out a motherboard for an upcoming project and remembered that I've been wanting to share some tips for those of you building your own server in a Supermicro chassis. Many of the Supermicro server chassis (Specifically the 825, 826, 216, 836, and 846) are built to E-ATX standards and can be used to install E-ATX, ATX, MicroATX, and MiniITX motherboards from other brands. However, the front panel I/O cable in those chassis are a bit unusual and different. Supermicro X11DPH-T, X11DPH-TQ & X11DPH-I Motherboard - In our video, learn more about these three SMC motherboards. We will provide a general overview specifically focused on the memory and CPU options. Inside the CSE-216, the X11DPH-T, X11DPH-TQ & X11DPH-I are exactly the same when it comes to RAM and processors. They are Extended ATX motherboards and could be put into different types of chassis. The CSE-216 just happens to be the chassis in this video, and it is a 2U chassis with 24 SFF (2.5") hard drive slots. In this video, we will go through the various types of memory, different speeds & sizes, and the max configuration for each type of memory. We will even review some best practices for installing and configuring your memory upgrade with some helpful tips and tricks along the way. Intel processors will also be in this video. We will discuss the different compatible CPUs, and which processors we recommend for both low end and high end applications. Sit back, relax and enjoy this Supermicro memory tutorial video on the X11DPH-T, X11DPH-TQ & X11DPH-I motherboards. Let's get started with the memory. All three types of boards, X11DPH-T, X11DPH-TQ & X11DPH-I, utilize the same exact RAM. So from this point forward, I will refer to X11DPH-T as the motherboard, but please keep in mind all the same information pertains to the X11DPH-TQ & X11DPH-I. There are 16 DIMM slots running on DDR4 memory architecture. You will have several options for memory speed: 2133MT/s, 2400MT/s, 2666MT/s, 2933MT/s or 3200MT/s. Please note 3200 speed will clock down to 2933MT/s. Memory DIMM capacity sizes include: 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, 32GB, 64GB, 128GB or 256GB. There are three types of compatible memory: ECC Registered (RDIMM), ECC Load Reduced (LRDIMM) and Intel Optane Memory. ECC Unbuffered (Server UDIMM) is not supported. We recommend ECC Reg for lower sized DIMMs such as 4GB, 8GB or 16GB. We recommend Load Reduced for higher sized modules such as 32GB, 64GB, 128GB or 256GB. The max configuration for Supermicro X11DPH-T motherboards with ECC Registered is 4TB via 16 x 256GB DDR3 2933MT/s ECC Registered server memory. Load Reduced memory offers the same exact scalability. Max configuration is 4TB via 16 x 256GB. Intel Optane memory will max out at 2TB via 8 x 256GB 2666MT/s persistent memory. You can only put in 1 Intel Optane per memory channel, which is why you can only install 8 and not 16 sticks. Regarding the processor, there are two CPU sockets, which are an LGA3647 socket. You can use a couple different types of Intel processor series with the Supermicro X11DPH-T family of motherboards. Intel Xeon Scalable series 1st and 2nd Generation processors. This means silver, gold and platinum processors are accepted. There are a number of great options for CPUs. In this video, I show the upgrade process I took to replace system fans in a Supermicro 846 Server Chassis with new quiet fans, replace the power supply, and replace the existing thermal paste. The new fans were purchased from Supermicro. The new power supply was purchased from eBay. I picked up the thermal paste from my local Micro Center. I decided to take the project on since moving to a 1 bedroom apartment. The noise level of this server was just too annoying to have in my kitchen. By upgrading the power supply and the internal fans, I cut the decibel level of the server in half. While performing this upgrade, I decided it would be a good idea to replace the exiting thermal paste and clean out the internal components and drives. Parts purchased for this upgrade: 1x Thermal Paste (Optional) - 5x Supermicro 80mm Hot-Swappable Middle Axial Fan (FAN-0104L4) - 1x Supermicro PWS-920P-SQ 920W 1U - Before the upgrade the server was producing noise at about 80 db. After the upgrade, the noise level was dropped to about 45 db.

A lot of people are using the Supermicro 846 chassis for their home servers now that they are cheap in the 2nd hand market. The big question comes around the BPN-SAS2-EL1 backplane that is usually included with the chassis. Does this backplane support dual linking (using 8 sas lanes) for better bandwidth throughput or not? Officially Supermicro says the backplane supports fail over which is a SAS drive only setup and not related to dual linking. In this video I will show you definitive proof that the backplane DOES support dual linking.
