This is a bit of an impromptu video. I was testing out a motherboard for an upcoming project and remembered that I've been wanting to share some tips for those of you building your own server in a Supermicro chassis. Many of the Supermicro server chassis (Specifically the 825, 826, 216, 836, and 846) are built to E-ATX standards and can be used to install E-ATX, ATX, MicroATX, and MiniITX motherboards from other brands. However, the front panel I/O cable in those chassis are a bit unusual and different. Supermicro X10DRH-C, X10DRH-CT & X10DRH-CLN4 motherboards inside the CSE-815 chassis - In this video, we will provide a simple and objective overview of the Supermicro X10DRH-C family of motherboards, specifically focus on Memory and Processors. We will dive into the different types of memory, DIMM sizes and speeds. We will touch on max memory installation capabilities. We will even physically install and configure the DIMMs and showcases some best practice tips and tricks along the way. On top of diving into the memory, we will review the compatible processors, and which CPUs we recommend for either low end or high end applications. The Supermicro X10DRH-C family of motherboards are E-ATX boards. These boards can be utilized in multiple chassis types such as rackmounts or towers. In this video, we are using the CSE-815, which is a 1U 4 Bay LFF chassis. Hope you enjoy Cloud Ninjas Supermicro server memory tutorial video on the X10DRH-C family of motherboards. Let's begin with the compatible memory options. Regardless of which type of motherboard - X10DRH-C, X10DRH-CT & X10DRH-CLN4 all utilize the exact same memory and Intel processors. From this point forward, I will refer to X10DRH-C family of motherboards, but please keep in mind all the same information pertains to X10DRH-CT & X10DRH-CLN4 as well. There are 16 DIMM slots operating on DDR4 memory. Several different speeds options are supported: 2133MT/s, 2400MT/s or 2666MT/s. Note 2666 will clock down to 2400MT/s speed. Memory DIMM capacity sizes supported include: 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, 32GB, 64GB or 128GB. There are two types of compatible memory: ECC Registered (RDIMM) and ECC Load Reduced (LRDIMM) server memory. We recommend ECC Registered server memory for lower DIMM sizes such as 4GB, 8GB or 16GB and we recommend Load Reduced server memory for higher DIMM sizes such as 32GB, 64GB or 128GB. Desktop memory is not supported. The max configuration for Supermicro X10DRH-C motherboard with ECC Registered is 1TB via 16 x 64GB DDR4 2400MT/s ECC Registered server memory. Whereas, Load Reduced Server memory will have twice the capacity! You can get 2TB on your Supermicro X10DRH-C with 16 x 128GB DDR4 2400MT/s ECC Load Reduced server memory. Now let's discuss the processors. There are two CPU sockets, which are an LGA2011-3 sockets. These boards are exclusively running on Intel processors and AMD does not have a compatible processor for this specific board. You can use a couple different types of Intel processor series with the Supermicro X10DRH-C family of motherboards. Intel Xeon E5-2600 V3 or V4 series. Cloud Ninjas recommends E5-2620v3, E5-2680v4 and E5-2690v4. There are a number of great options, we recommend using V4's. The X10DRH-C motherboard is a great option for a homelab server, virtualization environment or even a gaming server. Supermicro CSE813M chassis with X10SLM-F X10SLM+-F X10SLM+-LN4F motherboard. Thank you for stopping by. In our video, we are going to provide a general overview of the Supermicro X10SLM family of motherboards. In particular, we will focus on memory and processor compatibilities, options and recommendations. We will also load and install a set of memory to show some tips and tricks for proper configuration. Sit back, relax and enjoy the video! To begin with, the CSE-813M Chassis can support a number of different boards. It is always best to identify the motherboard inside to ensure parts you are buying fro upgrades are in fact compatible. The X10SLM family includes 3 motherboards: X10SLM-F X10SLM+-F X10SLM+-LN4F. From a CPU and memory point of view, they are all the exact same. There are of course differences in other aspects of the board, specifically connection options. But as far as memory and processors, they all use the same product. OK. Now that we know they are all the same, I will reference as X10SLM family moving forward. As discussed, the chassis CSE813M can support several different boards, and we find the X10SLM family of motherboards to be one of the most commonly used. Let's talk memory. X10SLM accepts DDR3 memory. There are four DIMM slots. Speed options include: 1066, 1333, 1600 or 1866MT/s. Please do note, 1866 will clock down to 1600. 1866 woll work, but not at its full speed capacity. There are several different options regarding sizes: 1GB, 2GB, 4GB and 8GB. We often get asked - Do 16GB DIMMs work inside the Supermicro X10SLM? Unfortunately, 16GB memory modules are not compatible for this server. 8GBs are in fact the highest DIMM size possible. With the X10SLM family of motherboards, there is only 1 type of memory supported and that's ECC Unbuffered, which is also known as a Server UDIMM. Unfortunately, ECC Registered (RDIMMs) and Load Reduced (LRDIMMs) are NOT compatible or supported by the Supermicro X10SLM motherboard. This is one key point. Make sure you buy ECC Unbuffered. The max configuration for Supermicro X10SLM is 32GB via (4 x 8GB) 1600MT/s ECC Unbuffered Server Memory. Let's chat processors. The Supermicro X10SLM has 1 CPU socket which is an LGA150 socket. You can choose between several different types of processors. What we find to be the most common is the Intel Xeon E3-1200 v3/v4 series. We see a lot of E3-1240v3 and E3-1270v3. When asked, this is what our team recommends. You can also utilize Intel 4th and 5th Gen Core i3 / i5 / i7 series processors. There are indeed a lot of options for such a small 1U. The Supermicro X10SLM is a very efficient server, which is highly recommended for low end applications. We will dive into the various types of supported memory, different speeds & sizes and the max configuration possible. Also in this video, we will discuss which Intel processors are compatible, as well as the CPUs we recommend for low end and high end applications. All four of these boards - X8DTE, X8DTE-F, X8DT6, X8DT6-F - accept the exact same memory and CPUs. From this point forward, we will refer to them as the X8DTE or X8DT6 family of boards. Let's begin with the memory. The Supermicro X8DTE motherboard has 12 DIMM slots running on DDR3 memory. There are several different speeds supported: 1066MT/s, 1333MTs and 1600MT/s. Do note 1600 will clock down to 1333MT/s which is in fact the fastest speed for the Supermicro X8DTE & X8DT6 family of boards. You have a number of choices regarding DIMM sizes including 2GB, 4GB, 8GB and 16GB. Unfortunately, 32GB and 64GB DIMMs are not supported. 16GB modules are the highest size. There is one type of RAM accepted and that is ECC Registered. Load reduced memory is not compatible. the max configuration for the Supermicro X8DTE motherboard is 192GB via 12 x 16GB DDR3 1333MT/s PC3-10600R ECC registered server memory. Regarding the processors, there are two CPU sockets, which are LGA1366. Intel Xeon 5500 or 5600 series processors are supported. We recommend E5620 for low end applications and X5650, X5660, X5670 for higher end applications. There are 6 DIMMs per CPU. Each CPU supports 3 memory channels. Each channel supports two DIMM slots. In this video, we are using the CSE-825, which is a 2U 8 Bay LFF chassis. Hope you enjoy Cloud Ninjas Supermicro server memory tutorial video on the X10SRL-F & X10SRi-F family of motherboards. We will start with memory. That is the heart of this video. Both Supermicro X10SRL-F & X10SRi-F motherboards accept the exact same memory and have same specs. All the details we discuss, will be good for both X10SRL-F & X10SRi-F mobos. These boards utilize DDR4 memory. There are 8 DIMM slots. You have several options regarding speeds: 2133MT/s, 2400MT/s or 2666MT/s. Please note 2666 will clock down to the true fastest speed which is 2400MT/s. Size options include: 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, 32GB, 64GB or even 128GB. There are 2 types of memory supported by Supermicro's X10SRL-F & X10SRi-F: ECC Registered (RDIMM) and Load Reduced (LRDIMM). Max configuration with RDIMMs is 512GB via (8 x 64GB) DDR4 PC4 2400MT/s ECC Registered server memory. Whereas, LRDIMM have double the capacity with 1TB (8 x 128GB) DDR4 2400MT/s ECC Load Reduced server memory. Both types of RAM are good options. We recommend LRDIMMs for high end applications and RDIMMs for low end applications. Let's chat about the processors. There is only 1 CPU inside. This is an LGA2011-3 socket, which means the Supermicro X10SRL-F & X10SRi-F motherboards accept Intel Xeon E5-1600 V3 or V4 as well as E5-2600 V3 or V4 processors. We recommend Intel E5-2620v3 for low end applications. Cheap and affordable but you still get 6 cores. For higher end applications, we like E5-2680v4 or E5-2690v4. In general, there are a lot of good options. AMD is not supported by X10SRL-F & X10SRi-F boards. Intel is the only supported manufacturer. Supermicro X8DTi-F Server Memory "How To Guide" for RAM installation and configuration. In this video, we will review best practices for loading your memory modules and go over all the various options including speeds, sizes and type of memory accepted. For starters, there are 12 DIMM slots. You can install sizes of 2GB 4GB 8GB 16GB or even 32GB DDR3 server memory. Speeds supported are 1066MHz, 1333MHz or 1600MHz. There are two types of RAM you can use. ECC Registered (RDIMMs) or ECC Unbuffered (Server UDIMMs). I wanted to share with you guys a really bizarre problem I encountered while testing out some Supermicro X9DRH-7F motherboards. The system is stuck during POST with "system initializing... B7". Usually, when you get codes like this, in particular, the B7, B9, BA, and BF code pertain to memory initialization problems. However, this motherboard was POSTing just fine with all DIMM slots occupied until I added a Nvidia Quadro P400 in one of the PCIe slots. In fact, I later found that the same problem would manifest with the P400 in ANY of the PCIe slots, even PCIe slots not related to the B7 code, which is the first CPU socket. Furthermore, I found a really bizarre way of reproducing this problem, which I will demonstrate in this video. The P400 card used in this demonstration tests just fine without problems in another fully working X9DRH-7F, but on this particular X9DRH-7F, I seem to have problems. Anyway, just wanted to share some troubleshooting tips here if or when you get "System initializing B7 B9 BA BF" codes. But also wanted to share with you guys this bizarre issue you will see in the video.
