The Dell PowerEdge R730 is a 2U powerhouse server. This video will provide a general system overview and tutorial on how to configure & install the memory properly. Dell R730’s are operated by 2 x Intel E5-2600 V3 or V4 series CPUs (LGA2011-3 socket). The R730 is a Dell 13th Generation server, which is the next gen to the popular Dell PowerEdge R720 server. There are 24 DIMM slots utilizing DDR4 memory modules. There are two types of memory to configure your R730 server with: ECC Registered (RDIMM) and Load Reduced (LRDIMM). With ECC Reg, the max configuration is 768GB via (24 x 32GB) DDR4 PC4-21300V-R 2666MHz Server Memory. However, load reduced DIMMs will provide four times the max capacity with 3TB of RAM via (24 x 128GB) DDR4 PC4-21300V-L 2666MHz Server Memory. For this reason, Cloud Ninjas' recommends LRDIMMs over RDIMMs. More scalability with load reduced. Each CPU controls 12 DIMM slots. There are 4 Memory Channels per CPU. Which means there are 3 DIMMs per Memory Channel. Dell has color coded each DIMM slot so you know how to properly load your memory. White is the start of each memory channel. The proper configuration for 2 CPUs would be 8, 16 or 24 DIMMs. In this video, we will discuss in more depth how to actually load the DIMMs inside your PowerEdge R730 server. I'm showing 2008, but really it's the same procedure for 2012. One note is that if you have your bios set to EUFI, it won't let you gain access to the RAID controller, you must switch boot mode to BIOS, then you can use CTRL-R to setup your RAID array, then switch back to EUFI. If you keep boot mode set to EUFI, you must select the "Configure RAID" during the OS Deploy function.

The R730xd features more storage than the PowerEdge R730 but both support the same Flexible Memory Configuration to allow mixing memory modules with different capacities. The following animation shows several memory options for both single and dual CPU configurations for both systems. The system supports both RDIMM and LRDIMMs but memory modules should not be mixed. There are 24 memory sockets total split into two sets of 12 sockets, one per processor. Slots A1 thru A12 are assigned to processor 1 and DIMMS in Sockets B1 thru B12 are assigned to processor 2. The system supports Flexible Memory Configuration to allow mixing memory modules with different capacities. When mixing memory modules you should start with the highest memory count in the white sockets, then load the black, then the green. Mixing of more than two DIMM capacities in a system is not supported. In a dual processor configuration the memory configuration should be identical. Populate four DIMMs per processor, one DIMM per channel at a time to maximize performance. Each processor supports four channels and includes white, black and green tabs. Memory Sparing is available and allows you to reserves one rank of DIMMs per channel as a spare. If errors are detected on a rank of DIMMs, the data from this rank is copied to the spare rank and the failed rank is disabled. Memory Mirroring offers the strongest DIMM reliability providing improved failure protection but the available memory is only half the total installed memory. Before adding or removing memory modules please ensure system is powered down and power cable has been unplugged. Module speed options include 2133MT/s, 2400MT/s, and 2666MT/s. Please note that when using Intel Xeon E5-2600v4 CPUs, 2666MT/s will clock down to 2400MT/s. When using E5-2600v3 CPUs, 2666MT/s and 2400MT/s will clock down to 2133MT/s. DIMM size options include: 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB. Note: 64GBs and 128GBs will only work with one type of RAM for the R730. This brings us to... What type of RAM does my PowerEdge R730 accept. The R730 accepts two types of RAM, which are ECC Registered (RDIMM) and Load Reduced (LRDIMM). With LRDIMMs you can achieve a greater overall capacity than RDIMMs. For RDIMMs, the max configuration is 768GB via (24 x 32GB) DDR4 PC4-19200T-R 2400MHz ECC Registered Server Memory. For LRDIMMs the max configuration is a whopping 3TB via (24 x 128GB) DDR4 PC4-19200T-L 2400MHz Load Reduced Server Memory. The PowerEdge R730’s run on dual Intel Xeon E5-2600 V3 or V4 series CPUs. The CPU socket inside is an LGA2011-3 socket, which means that the R730 utilizes Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 or v4 series processors. Please note, that in order to use the v4 processors, you must have an updated BIOS. In general, it is always a good idea to keep everything on your system up to date, which you can learn how in our Mass Updates video. Below are some of the CPUs that we recommend.
