So, let's say I have my laptop here, and I really want to connect it to my network. So, I'll take a little ethernet cable, and plug it to the laptop; and on the other side, of course, it has to go to my router. Let's, oh no, I'm out of ports on my router. All my ports are already full, because I've connected them to all my other computers. So, what are we gonna do? This is where the ethernet switch comes in handy. As you can see, the ethernet switch just as a bunch of ports on it. So, to connect to the network what I have to do is first, take one of the ports that are already connected to the network, and move them over to the switch. Now, the reason I'm doing that is because I need a free port on my router, so I can connect my switch to it So I'm gonna take another ethernet cable, plug that one in; and then, the other side goes to my router. Now, it doesn't really matter where you connect the cables to, as long as the order is correct. The specific port is of no importance. So, as long as I connected the switch to the router, everything that's connected to the switch, is also connected to the router. Basically, the switch just extends the ports that are on the router. So, now I have to just connect my laptop over to the switch, and I'm done. Everybody's online. The laptop is connected to the switch, the switch is connected to the router, and everything that's connected to both the router and the switch, is on the network. Now, this is a really good trick if you have, for example, another room in your house that has a bunch of computers in it that you wanna connect to your network, not wirelessly, but with an actual cable. This means that you only have to really run one cable over to that room, and then just hook it up to a switch that has more ports.

Let's say I have many, many computers in my house, or in my office, and I connected all of the ports that I have here. Most routers will have four ports on them, so I have connected three computers and a printer. But suddenly I wanted to buy another computer. So, that's what the switch is for. A switch is basically kind of like a network surge protector. Just think about it this way. You plug in one output to your router, and the other ones will just split up that connection, to give you more hookups. This is called a four port switch, which will mean it will have actually five ports - one which will be uplink. It will send the signal back to the router - and the other four will split it up for four computers. Switches come in many sizes. They can come in four port size A ports, 16, 32, even 64. And of course, they have much larger more industrial switches for big industrial settings. And they also have different speeds to them. And when I say speed, I'm basically talking about the speed of the port. The basic speed is 10 megabit per second; then you have 100 megabit, which is pretty much the standard nowadays. And today, we also have faster switches which are gigabits. So you have 1,000 megabits per second. If you buy a gigabit switch, it's also wise to make sure your computer has a gigabit Ethernet port, and also that your router has a gigabit Ethernet port, otherwise you're not really thinking that that would do it. So, if you have way to many computers for your router to handle, an Ethernet switch is definitely what you need.

Hello and welcome to Show Me Cables. Today, we’ll be taking a look at wiring splitters. This is the 10/100 BaseT wiring splitter with 04 wiring. Before we get into the features and applications I want to clear up a common area of confusion. The wiring splitters need to be used in pairs. They will not work to split 1 Ethernet signal into 2 signals. Now that that’s out of the way, let’s get into how the splitters work. The wiring splitter features two female RJ45 ports and a short 6 inch cable with a male RJ45 plug. For anyone not entirely clear on RJ45’s. RJ45 is the larger plug found on Ethernet cables, not the smaller plug, known as RJ11 or RJ12 that you would find on a telephone cord. The splitter also has the option to be easily wall mounted and includes the necessary mounting screws. How it works, is that it will allow you to take 2 ethernet signals from your source. Let’s say a modem, switch, or router. So that’s 2 cables coming from your source. Then, you can plug the 2 source cables into the splitter, combining both signals into a single cable. This is typically done at a wall plate or patch panel. Your signals are then carried across a single line and up to your output wall plate, where you will plug in your second wiring splitter. And finally, take 2 more Ethernet cables to connect from the 2nd wiring splitter into the two devices that need data. To recap: You will take two Ethernet cables from your source into the splitter. Your signal is run across a single line. Then it is split back out from the second wiring splitter and out to your devices. Now, you may be asking why even bother? Why do I need two wiring splitters if I can just run two cables? Well it actually can be a life saver in projects where a 2nd data line needs to be added, but only a single cable has been run in wall. Instead of running an entire new length of cable in the wall, you can simply connect the lines with a couple wiring splitters and you’re good to go. Full Playlist: - - Watch more How to Set Up Internet videos: So when you get your wireless access point and you want to install it, the first thing you need to do is really set it up with a computer. Even if eventually you're not going to use it with a computer or it's just going to be extending your network or connecting a printer to your network, you always want to set it up with your computer first. Because you have to give it all the information that it needs to know in order to work properly. So for example, if you're trying to setup a printer that doesn't have wireless access and connect it to your network, you will have to setup the name and password of your network in the access point before you connect it to the printer. That way, when you connect it to the printer it'll automatically connect to your network and everything will just work, and the printer will not even be aware that it's connected to a wireless network. It'll just think somebody hardwired it right to the router. To do that, you will usually just plug in your ethernet cable to the access point and the other side will go to your computer. Sometimes the access point will come with a CD that tells you how to do everything and take you through a wizard to set everything up. But other times all you have to do is just open your web browser and the access point should automatically take you to a setup page. Just remember, you want to turn off your wireless on your computer before you start doing all this so that your computer knows that the only device it's talking to on the network is the access point and not your actual network. So once you do that and you're connected to the access point, you should see the setup page on your browser and you should be able to setup all the configuration you need to connect it to your network. This form of setup works whether you have a mac or a pc or even Linux, it doesn't really matter, because all that we're using is the web browser to access the access point. Once you're done, simply disconnect it, after you save the settings of course, and hook it up to the device you want to use it with and you should be all done.

Many Network issues can be solved by basic troubleshooting techniques. This video focuses on the use of LINK LIGHTS (or Link LED) to help identify the most basic level of connectivity between computers, switches and routers. But, brought to you in a kind of Network 101 format. The Link Lights are tiny LEDs that are on network equipment. Small office or corporate enterprise - almost all networking equipment has Link indicators. They give an indication of a basic network connection. Depending on the variation, they can also give you information about speed and activity of the network ports. The absence of healthy link lights is an indication of cable problems, bad ethernet cables, or some configuration problem. Zarobienie wtyku RJ45 na kablu sieciowym jest proste, a film pokazuje krok po kroku jak wykonać tą czynność samodzielnie. Jeśli wymieniasz wtyk stary, uszkodzony na nowy, zwróć uwagę na kolejność żył, by w nowej wtyczce zamontować żyły tak samo, wtedy połączenie sieciowe będzie skuteczne. Pisak W praktyce stosujemy 2 rodzaje połączenia kabla "skrętka" UTP poprzez odpowiednie ułożenie żył we wtyczce RJ45 wg 2 standardów: 1. Połączenie PROSTE (Standard EIA/TIA T568B* lub T568B), gdzie obydwie strony kabla są zaciśnięte tak samo. Połączenie pomiędzy poszczególnymi urządzeniami sieciowymi, np. Komputer - Router, Router - Router itp. * Najczęściej stosowane połączenie. 2. Połączenie krzyżowe "skrosowane" (Standard EIA/TIA T568B z jednej strony kabla i T568A z drugiej strony kabla), gdzie po dwóch stronach kabla wtyczki mają zaciśnięte żyły w innej kolejności. Połączenie bezpośrednie pomiędzy dwoma komputerami, rzadko stosowany rodzaj połączenia. Na filmie pokazano, jak zamontować wtyk RJ45 w standardzie T568B, najczęściej stosowanym do połączeń urządzeń.
