There is A LOT of important info in this description, so be sure to check it out. I decided to do this review after I got a lot of eyebrow raising in the pit when using this lens over some of the more expensive competitors like Nikon and Canon 24-70. While I am a professional photographer and should probably upgrade, I am definitely a for profit business and don't like spending money if I don't see a reason to do so. I originally used this lens on my Nikon D3200 and it was stellar. I outgrew a lot of the features of the D3200 and upgraded and bought some full frame cameras, including the D700 and D610. I am in no way endorsed by Sigma Cameras and that makes my review even that much cooler. If it was a complete piece of garbage, I would tell you it was, yet this is the lens that has stayed in my bag and gotten a lot of use. This lens has some incredible features, such as the extremely fast focus, the 2.8 aperture, vivid colors, and minimal CA. Its HSM focus motor does just what it is supposed to do and watched focus quickly. I use this in concert photography and my subject move around a lot. I have video coming soon of my using this at a concert, look for that. While I excluded this from the video, it doesn't mean it isn't true. While the focus is fast, so is every other 2.8 on the market currently. Do they all compare perfectly? No, is it fast enough that I deliver exceptional images to clients consistency with no worries? See where I am going? Now, with all good things, there are downfalls. As mentioned in the video, the weight is heavy, the Af/M switch is complete crap due to unintentional hitting it, and the CA could be better. Luckily I don't care about weight of a lens, kind makes me feel like a badass carrying around such a heavy piece of machinery. AS far as the Af/M button, I now know if the focus stops, I hit the button, this wasn't the case when i first started using and I would panic! The CA is perfectly within reason, especially compared to some of sigma older lenses which I have owned as well. This lens has it so rare that I often forget to take it out in post and never even realize unless I go back to look. This lens is a 9/10 for those reason. I didn't bore you with specs too much in the video, because much like I always do, you are most likely here to see images and get peoples opinions on how they like it. I try to get straight to what causes me to use it and what makes me now want to use it. I am a professional photographer in the sense that this is my only job and I depend on it to survive. READ THE REVIEW HERE BUY the Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 HSM for Canon Here; Buy the Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 HSM for Nikon Here; by Darren Miles Naples, FL Photographer After the great response I received from my first video for the Canon EF-S 15-85mm, I decided to start reviewing all my lenses based on real world experience rather than the charts you see on most review sites. The reality is the majority of us take photos in real world situations and not in controlled environments that are used by most reviewers. On to the Sigma 24-70 EX DG HSM f/2.8 lens. Sigma is the world's largest manufacturer of 3rd party lenses () for all camera systems. Notably, they manufacture lenses that compete directly with some of the most popular from the standard bearers Nikon and Canon for significantly less money. But do the lenses hold up in terms of build, focus speed and accuracy as well as optical quality? Lets find out. BUILD: The Sigma 24-70 EX DG HSM is part of Sigma's EX (or Excellence) line of lenses, aimed at professional photographers ($1,499 list, $899 street), the build quality is top notch with smooth and well damped focus and zoom rings. The lens consists of heavy plastic and feels solid in the hands. It is a stout lens, much shorter than its Canon counterpart. Overall, a solid effort. Nice job Sigma! FOCUS SPEED AND ACCURACY: The HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) focuses quickly - not as fast as Canon's ultrasonic - but certainly not slow and certainly fast enough for most real world situations. But is the focus accurate? Yes and No. If you read reviews around the net, you'll find that no manufacturer has as many focus issues as Sigma - specifically when mounted to Canon cameras. Most reviewers will tell you that "when a Sigma lens hits" it's amazing, the problem is, it doesn't hit often enough. Much to my chagrin, I have had similar experiences with this lens. When its focuses accurately (which is approximately 70% of the time, and by the way, this particular lens was sent to Sigma THREE TIMES for calibration) the results are just stellar, great contrast, excellent color rendition, very little chromatic aberation, smooth buttery bokeh. Nice! However, with my specific copy, I find the further my subject moves away from the lens (specifically at f/2.8), the less likely the lens is to focus properly - usually back focusing noticeably... If the subject is within say 15 feet of the camera, it'll hit with dead accuracy. Pretty shaky and not exactly the kind of performace that gives a photographer a strong sense of confidence. If I'm at an event, I don't always feel super secure that I'll get the shot when I have this lens mounted on my rig - specifically in low light... OPTICAL QUALITY: The results of the lens's optical performance correlate directly to the focus performance. When its on, wow - amazing, the problem is, I can't count on it. For the purpose of reviewing optical quality, I'll 'focus' on the shots I get when it hits - most are sampled in the brief video - some of the better shots I've ever taken have been with this lens, I actually mistakenly put this lens in the wrong lens bag and took it to a wedding I was shooting, and caught one of my best shots ever (the shot at 1:01) - so in effect, the Sigma surprised me, in a positive way. If you're shooting with this lens in a studio environment (with apertures at f/5.6 and above) the lens will perform marvelously. CONCLUSION: So how does the Sigma stack up? Well, its a mixed bag. You buy a lens like this for several reasons, number one, its an f/2.8 aperture, meaning you're an event photographer who needs a lens in low light situations. The other reason you'll buy this lens is because you're interested in saving money versus buying the Canon or Nikon counterpart (a savings of $500 - $700) which makes the Sigma - on paper anyway - a compelling value. However, if you get paid to take people's photos, you may want to consider spending the extra money and buy the manufacturers versions to insure focus accuracy. I've heard great stories about this lens, and there are photographers out there who'll swear by the Sigma. Truth is, I want to love this lens, but given its focussing inconsistency, I am reluctant to go beyond just a basic 'recommend' review... Some photographers have gotten lucky, you may be one of them, but for the purposes of this review - in a nutshell; Build Quality - 9/10 Focus Speed and Accuracy - 7/10 Optical Quality - 8/10 Quality of results - 7/10 Value - 7/10 Overal - 38 (out of 50) - Recommend

This video is about assembling the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 AF IF EX DG HSM lens after the aperture flex cable have been replaced. The aperture of the lens did not work, and it was caused by faulty flex cable. So I had to disassemble the lens, replace the flex cable with a new one, then assemble the lens. In this video I'll show you how to assemble the lens after the cable have been replaced. Pricing: Canon 24-70mm: B&H | Amazon Tamron 24-70mm: B&H | Amazon Sigma 24-70mm: B&H | Amazon Now that I ordered my Canon 5D Mark III I can start buying some really good glass. Since I am mostly a run and gun shooter, I don't have the luxury of time to swap out prime lenses out on the fly all day long, so that is why the first lens I want to buy is a 24-70mm f2.8. Now I have used the Canon 24-70mm many times in the past and I really like it, but I got really excited when Lee Morris from turned me the new Tamron 24-70 VC lens that has VC or vibration control and is cheaper. The Canon 24-70 is $1,600 and the Tamron is $1,300. Lee had mixed results on which one is sharper so I thought I would give you guys another test. I'm a bit biased already on this review because I really want to Tamron to win but that's is why my good friend James Drake from 5KInsight is here to keep things in perspective. James is real smart guy, and has a lot of experience using really expensive glass, you should listen to him if he if we disagree. The reason why I want it to win is the Tamron has image stabilization which is awesome for video. For it to win, it needs to be just as sharp as the Canon and have a good working vibration control. I think a lot of people that shoot video are frustrated that Canon didn't give us a 24-70 with IS. I think Cannon lost an opportunity here and has left the door open for Tamron on this one. Important to note this is not the II version of the Canon lens that runs for $2,300. So what I'm really hoping for in this test is the Tamron is to be just as sharp as the Canon because the 5D Mark III it is not the sharpest tool in the shed. Right off the bat that Canon has a very stiff focus ring, I know from using my friends that is a couple years old the focus ring is a lot smoother than this one. The all turn clockwise to extend the lens, however the Canon actually zooms when contracted which is backwards from the other two and all other lenses I have used. This can be frustrating. Range of the focus ring and how well each manually focuses, Canon 120 degrees, Tamron 100 degrees, Sigma 85 degrees. If there was an instance where in one test there was one lens sharper in the center but the other was sharper in the corner, I gave the win to the one sharpest in the center. When I had to spend more than 30 seconds trying to figure which one was sharpest I would call it a tie, sometimes it was so close. For the most part they all tied in the middle f5.6 to f8 at both wide and tele. Sigma did really well at f22 and f2.8 at 24mm. The most glaring however was Sigma at 2.8 at 70mm. Tamron won only once at f8 at 24mm but it had no glaring issues and way always ever so slightly behind the winners. The Tamron VC is a lot quieter than my Canon 28-135 IS. I am not an expert on bokeh, I used to think it was when you had more blades in the lens made prettier circles, but I am not seeing much ghosting or doubling of the blurry objects on any of them. Where I need the VC the most is at 70mm and not so much at 24mm, I plan on buying L series glass for a 16-35mm some day. Royalty free music by
