The more I use this lens the more I love it. These images are more straightforward than the previous test and provide better examples of what to expect from this lens. As I mentioned in the first test the images are softer than a traditional telephoto lens but I believe it can be harnessed for aesthetic effect, and as I also mentioned before the compact size, super light weight, and very affordable price ($224) are more than a fair trade for less than "perfect" performance. The bubble bokeh is more subtle in these images compared to the last test but I still think they introduce a pleasant dreamy and quality. Now let's talk about the real star of the show! Howe cute is that dog? As I was filming I could not believe how many people snubbed him! When I finally stopped rolling I showered him with a lots of pets and positive vibes until his human (who was very nice) finally came out of the store and took him home.

I love this lens. I imagine many people would be put off by a lens that has a fixed aperture, in this case F8, but I enjoyed the challenge of adjusting exposure with the other variables (ISO and shutter speed). These were the very first shots I took with this lens. I wanted to find a location that would bring out the unique qualities of the catadioptric design so I found a street in my neighborhood with a lot of tree cover and it proved perfect for showcasing the famous hoop bokeh which I found very appealing. Then I spotted a man petting his dog a block away, the view down the sidewalk has what I consider a very pleasing hallway of trees effect. Placing the man and his dog in the center of the frame and being focused on a subject so far away emphasized how soft the edges of the image are. Overall the image is softer than traditional lens designs, especially telephoto lenses. But the compact and light weight of the lens design are a fair trade. All in all I think I captured a nice peaceful slice of life in my neighborhood and the unique aesthetic of this lens lent a dreamy quality that is reminiscent of older telephoto lenses that are celebrated for their technical "flaws" today. But this lens has the advantage being both new and very affordable at only $224.

A quick correction up front. I said that the angle of view on this lens is 3.1 degrees; it is actually 2.6 degrees, 1.7 on APS-C. This lens is functionally a telescope. I failed to note it in the video, but on top of the secondary mirror, in the optical path, are corrector lenses that appear to be similar in design to those found in an Argunov- or Klevtsov-cassegrain telescope. The lenses in the rear appear to be a dialyte correction system. The primary mirror may also be a rear-coated mangin mirror, but I couldn't verify and assumed that it is surface coated. This video looks at the Opteka (also Samyang, Kenko, Neewer, Bowers, and others) 800mm f/8 catadioptric mirror lens is an extreme telephoto lens that requires fast shutter speeds of 1/1,250th and better or a tripod to prevent image blurring. This is a hard lens to use and requires that the photographer make a significant number of compromises to use it. Sharpness, ease of focus, and quality of of out of focus area are all sacrificed for light weight, small size, and some additional color saturation compared to refractive lenses. The negative aspects of this lens cannot be corrected in post. The positive aspects can be replicated in post (aside from the size and weight reduction.) Also, this lens is expensive for what it delivers. The end of this video provides a series of images that I took on my Pentax K-1 with a 400mm f/6.3 Vivitar lens from the 1970s. I then share the same images cropped to an 800mm angle of view. The cropped 400mm VIvitar images outperform the Opteka images handily. Mirror camera lenses are better quality than most people think. That are difficult to use for the beginner photographer because they must be used completely in manual mode , nothing is automatic except the exposure in some cases , the f stop is fixed this one for example is f8, A although mirror lenses are difficult to use they are a very good cheap altrnative to expensive telephoto lenses. Any telephoto lens is difficult to hold steady and mirror lenses are no exception, a tripod is by far the best answer.
