This is a quick look at the Canon EF 400mm f/ telephoto lens along with some sample images. It's an old lens, but it is still a very capable performer and very sharp. There is no Image Stabilization, but if you are hand-holding to photograph birds in flight this doesn't matter too much and in other situations you would normally use a tripod. Canon 400 Lens Review with high quality bird photographs. Join me in the field as I put the EF400 lens through its paces, I also showcase some of my favourite images taken over the years, and I compare this lens to several other lenses in its class and share my pros and cons. There is a huge range of lenses available for wildlife photography making choosing a lens difficult. Here's a few shots I did this week using the Canon 400mm lens on my R6. Coming from a 7d mk ii and a 1DX mkii, I am super impressed with this camera. I'm now all in on mirrorless. Also, The lens performs wonderfully and I couldn't be happier. AF was fast and snappy, Eye tracking is awesome. As old as the lens is, it still creates super sharp images. IMO, this lens is sharper and works better than my Sigma 150-600 C although it is to be expected. The only issue is losing some reach but I have learned that getting closer is the key when you lose reach. Although the focal length on the 400 is shorter, it is a lot easier to handle. Some days I want to just hand hold and be able to swing the lens around quick. Comment below your favorite wildlife lens on an R6. Thanks for watching and subscribing!

We dive into some serious bird photography using the popular Canon 400mm F/5.6 Camera lens. See our example photos of a Winter Wren using this super-sharp lens. We made the short drive to LaSalle Park in Burlington in hopes of hand-feeding Black-capped chickadees some black oil sunflower seeds. We were delighted to find an active Winter wren along the forest walkway. We were able to take some great photographs of this bird, as well as hand-feed some Chickadees!

This is a great super telephoto lens for bird photography. The image quality on this lens is superb, and the build quality is even more impressive. Made from solid metal, I'd feel safe carrying this in the woods in case I need to knock out a bear or two. The major downsides are the aperture and lack of image stabilization (IS), which may or may not be deal breakers depending what you take photos of. Using a 400mm lens, the depth of field is really small, so I realistically probably wouldn't use a lens at f/2.8 or even f/4 too often, unless the subject was far enough away. With aperture of f/5.6 at a distance of 6 feet on a full frame camera such as the Canon 6D, you get a depth of field of 0.2 inches. In metric, at 2 meters, you get a depth of field of cm. An aperture of f/2.8 would half those depths of field, which would make it unusable for most situations. As for lack of IS, if you're doing bird photography at 1/2000 or faster shutter speeds, the images should be sharp with or without IS. If you plan on using this lens indoors in bad lighting conditions, though, prepare to use ISOs in the 12'800 to 102'400 and wishing your camera could go in the millions of ISO. The lack of IS is much more an issue for video work, where I've had some success handholding it and applying the warp stabilizer in Adobe Premiere Pro. It doesn't turn it into tripod-steady footage, but closer to steadycam footage, which is usually quite acceptable. Using a teleconverter, though, the image quality dropped quite a bit, and the aperture of f/8 () and f/11 (2x) disabled the autofocus on my Canon 6D camera, which made this lens quite harder to use. But used without any converters, the autofocus was fast and accurate. Overall I quite enjoyed renting this lens, and I'm looking forward to comparing it to other similar lenses such as the Canon 100-400mm L and the Tamron 150-600mm lens. My guess is the zoom versions would be more versatile in parts because of the zoom, but also because of the image stabilization, but for image quality, I believe the 400mm f/ would come out on top by a large margin. Shooting on a 7d (for its cropped sensor), this portfolio showcases the results of my extensive photographic testing. Whilst the 400mm is a fixed focal length, it is a very versatile lens - I primarily use it for birds and wildlife but have successfully shot creative and abstract landscapes and flowers too. It really is a great lens, boasting excellent sharpness and, for its quality, when compared with other telephoto lens it is good value for money.
