Now you’re probably thinking what is a coolant temp sensor and how do I know if I have a bad coolant temperature sensor. Well, the purpose of the coolant temp sensor is basically to monitor the temperature of the engine and radiator coolant, and sends the signal back to the ECU or electronic control unit or commonly known as the main computer. In this video i have used DS18B20 temperature sensor with arduino IoT cloud to monitor the temperature remotely. What is DS18b20 temperature sensor? The DS18B20 digital thermometer provides 9-bit to 12-bit Celsius temperature measurements and has an alarm function with non-volatile, user-programmable high and low trigger points. This means that the sensor has a programmable upper and lower limit. The DS18B20 communicates via a 1-wire bus, which requires only one data line for communication with a central microprocessor. In addition, the DS18B20 can draw power directly from the data line ("parasite power"). This eliminates the need for an external power source. Each DS18B20 has a unique 64-bit serial code. This allows multiple sensors to operate on the same 1-Wire bus and be evaluated by only one microprocessor. Applications that can benefit from this feature include HVAC environmental controls, temperature monitoring systems in buildings, plants or machinery, and process monitoring and control systems.

We’ll discuss the sensors used with them, and show you how they are connected in a typical control loop. We’ll also give you an insight into how they are calibrated. Temperature Transmitters are available in all different shapes and sizes depending on the application and environment they are expected to operate. To name a few, there are: - DIN rail mounted, - Field mounted, - Hockey puck style. A Temperature Transmitter is a device that converts the signal produced by a temperature sensor into a standard instrumentation signal representing a process variable temperature being measured and controlled. The most common transmitter instrumentation output signal is 4 to 20 mA. The signal from the Temperature Transmitter is sent to a Controller that determines what action is required and generates an appropriate output signal. Controllers are either a PLC or a DCS in process control today. The Heating/Cooling source exerts a direct influence on the process as directed by the controller. Most Temperature Transmitters are 2-wire types having only two wires. These two wires provide power for the transmitter and are also the signal lines! A 4-wire transmitter has two wires connected to a power supply and two signal wires connected to the PLC. The power supply can be AC or DC depending on the vendor and model. The two most common temperature sensors used in process control are the thermocouple and the Resistance Temperature Detector (RTD). The thermocouple produces a change in voltage with a temperature change. Thermocouples have only two wires. An RTD produces a change in resistance with a temperature change. Unlike a thermocouple that has only two leads, an RTD can have two, three, or four leads. It’s common to see Temperature Transmitters that are capable of working with either an RTD or a thermocouple. The SMART transmitter is an intelligent transmitter that has an analog output of 4 to 20 mA and also provides digital communication signal information such as Instrument Tag Names, Calibration Data, and Sensor Diagnostics. These SMART transmitters use HART protocol or FOUNDATION FIELDBUS or PROFIBUS. A Temperature Transmitter needs to be adjusted or calibrated so that the current output of 4 to 20 mA represents the temperature range of the process variable being measured. In every calibration scenario, the sensor is replaced by a device that can simulate the output of the sensor over the entire process variable temperature range. - For a thermocouple, the sensor is replaced by a device that produces a range of millivolts. - For an RTD, the sensor is replaced by a device that produces a range of resistances. Historically the device that produced a range of resistances was a decade box. Signal Reference Calibrators can output a variety of electrical signals that can simulate RTDs and Thermocouples making it much easier to calibrate Temperature Transmitters. Older style Temperature Transmitters have multi-turn potentiometer adjustments called Zero and Span. The Zero pot is adjusted to produce 4 mA when the simulated temperature is 0%, and the Span pot is adjusted to produce 20 mA when the simulated temperature is 100%. Newer style Temperature Transmitters are programmed or calibrated using the software. Microdul supplies ultra-low-power temperature sensors. For example, the MS1088D has a typical current consumption of 80nA when measuring once per minute. Typical current in sleep mode between measurements is 20nA. Typical accuracy is ±0.3°C from 10-40°C with a resolution of °C. It has an operating range from -40°C to 120°C. ✅ C'mon over to where you can learn PLC programming faster and easier than you ever thought possible! ============================= ✅ Check out the full blog post over at ============================= In your daily life and different branches of industries, there are many cases in which it’s required to know the temperature of the environment, inside a reactor, winding of an electrical machine, and so on. Most likely you’ve heard about “RTDs”, “Thermocouples”, “Thermistors”, “Semiconductor” type elements, and so on, which will be addressed here. let’s see what a “Temperature Sensor” (Temperature Transducer) is and what does a “Temperature Transmitter” mean. Generally, a sensor or transducer is a physical device that is capable of transforming one type of process variable to my favorite signal type. Temperature, pressure, flow, etc., are some process variables and actually, they are physical characteristics of our real world. The temperature sensor is a device that will transform the Temperature into an electrical signal, no matter how tiny the amount of this signal might be! Based on different sensor technologies, this signal may have different ranges and for industrial applications, I need to have my signals limited to some universally accepted electrical “signal-ranges”. Today some of these globally accepted electrical signal-ranges are 4-20 mA, 1-5 V, 0-10 V, etc. A “Temperature Transmitter” is a device that transforms the tiny output of a “Temperature Transducer” to one of these standard signal ranges. RTD or “Resistance Temperature Detector” is a device the resistance of which varies with the temperature. Since it is a passive device, an external electrical current should be applied to it and then the voltage drop across it can be measured. This voltage is a good indication of the temperature. In reality, the distance between the temperature sensing point and measuring system calls for wiring and since the real wiring has its own resistance, some measurement error sneaks in hereby! Three-wire and Four-wire solutions are developed to remove this error. One of the most common RTDs is “PT100” which consists of a thin film of Platinum on a plastic film and shows a resistance of 100Ω at 32° F. Thermistors are temperature-dependent resistors and are widely used in industrial purposes, e.g. over-current protection, self-regulating heating elements, inrush current limiters, and so on. Thermistors can be NTC or PTC. In NTC (Negative Temperature Coefficient) thermistors, resistance decreases as temperature rises. NTC’s are commonly used as “inrush” current limiters. And with PTC (Positive Temperature Coefficient) thermistors, resistance increases as temperature increases. PTC thermistors are commonly used as “overcurrent protection” and in resettable fuses. A thermocouple or simply “TC” is comprised of a couple of specific dissimilar wires joined together, forming the “sensing point” or “junction”. Based on physical characteristics called “Thermoelectric Effect”, when this junction is placed at different temperatures, different millivolt signals are generated which can be interpreted as an indication of the temperature. The main restriction of Thermocouples is the “accuracy” which doesn’t make it the best solution for precise applications. Also, Thermocouples need a reference measurement point called “Cold Junction”. The thermocouple junction is often exposed to extreme environments, while the cold junction is often mounted near the instrument location. Based on “range” of temperature measurement, “sensitivity” and some other factors in each application, different types of Thermocouples are available, for example, E, J, K, M, N, T, and so on. “Semiconductor Temperature Sensor” is based on the fact that the junction voltage across a p-n combination of semiconductors, like a diode junction or “base-emitter” junction of regular transistors, is a function of temperature. If I have to measure electronic PCB and/or IC temperature, silicon-based types are the best choices. Also alongside the technical bonus-malus comparison, sometimes cost is the key factor in selecting the proper device, as they say: “Money Talks!” ============================= Missed our most recent videos? In other words, electrical resistance of certain metals increases and decreases in a predictable manner as the temperature increases or decreases. Commonly used metals for RTDs are Platinum, Copper, and Nickel. What is PT100, PT500, PT1000? They are all types of RTD (Resistance Temperature Detector) sensors that are made from Platinum. The Pt100 sensor has a resistance of 100 ohms at 0°C and is by far the most common type of RTD sensor. The Pt500 sensor has a resistance of 500 ohms at 0°C and the Pt1000 has 1000 ohms resistance at 0°C. RTDs are usually selected over thermocouples because of their inherent stability. Another advantages over thermocouples is that no special compensating lead wire or cold junction compensation is needed. Thermistors: A typical thermistor has a negative temperature coefficient.
