Data backup is that big expensive hidden cost of producing video content and doing photography. I was running out of storage on two 10TB external WD Elements hard drives that I mirrored data on by hand, so something had to be done. I decided to buy a second pair of 10 TB external drives, a QNAP TR-004 DAS device, and a Seagate 16 TB external drive. This will give me some headroom on total storage available as well as allow me to make more mirrors of the data. In this video I talk about the why and how it all turned out. It would probably be a good idea to do the entire 4 that is default, but expect to have it running for a few days. Details on RAID 10: #RAID_10_(RAID_1+0) QNAP External RAID Manager for Windows: Speed tests: I just copied over a 67GB project from the TR-004 to a RAID 0 pair of SSDs. It transferred around 240MB/s with the four 10TB WD drives in RAID 1+0 mode (aka. RAID 10). I'm on firmware and use their software to control the device. Writing speeds are lower at around 195 MB/s. It's possible my drives or the RAID configuration are the limit here. I don't have 4 SSDs to test with and this is my main backup so I can't mess around with it much. Right now I'm using a USB-C to USB-C 3.1 Gen 2 cable ( ) instead of the one that came with the device. I didn't notice any speed differences between the cables from what I can remember., but maybe this cable and port combo is slightly faster than the 3.0 ports. My motherboard has a single high speed USB-C SuperSpeed port I wanted to utilize because my high speed type-a ports are used for other external drives. #DataStorage #DataBackup #QNAP I hope you enjoyed this video. QNAP (unlike their biggest rivals Synology) are quite up front about new releases. Luckily we can see that QNAP are still proving themselves to be the innovators of the NAS industry and have let us know all about their newest tech, however this time they have moved towards traditional local direct attached storage (DAS) in their newest release. The TR-004 RAID DAS NAS is the latest unit to be unveiled and going by all indications, it will be replacing the UX-500P and UX-800P as the NAS expansion unit of choice, but with several KEY improvements. QNAP today launched the TR-002, a 2-bay hardware RAID expansion enclosure that can be utilized as a NAS storage expansion solution, and also as hardware RAID storage for Windows/macOS/Linux computers and NAS. The TR-002 can be connected to a PC or NAS via USB 3.1 Gen.2 TR-002 connects to a PC/NAS via USB 3.1 Gen.2 Type-C and provides a dependable storage solution for various user requirements. The TR-002 supports individual, JBOD and RAID 0/1 storage configurations. QNAP NAS users can use the TR-002 with their NAS to set RAID parameters and create a storage pool by using the “Storage and Snapshots” app within QTS. Alternatively, the TR-002 can be used as an external storage device for the NAS. Windows, macOS and Linux users with limited storage upgrade options can also use the TR-002 as an expansion unit, and a dedicated QNAP External RAID Manager utility (for Windows and macOS) can help them view disk health, change RAID configurations, check logs, and update the firmware of the TR-002.“QNAP’s first QNAP hardware RAID storage expansion enclosure (the TR-004) has received wide acclaim since its launch. QNAP now introduces a 2-bay version, the TR-002, that comes with UBS 3.1 Gen. 2 connectivity, allowing NAS and PC users to take the advantage of TR-002’s high-speed data transfer with RAID protection,” said Jason Hsu, Product Manager of QNAP.A DIP switch on the rear of the TR-002 can switch the disk configuration.
