I've had a lot of storage disasters lately, so I'm revamping my entire storage situation with a couple different NAS and DAS solutions, along with rehauling my server. Today I'm reviewing the QNAP TS-451A NAS - this is a 4-bay NAS with 4GB of RAM. I have 4 2TB drives in it. They literally do everything from the basics like file and media serving all the way to virtualization that enables spinning up additional operating systems. It even has a built in HDMI output for using it as a home theater device or even like a dedicated computer. I am most interested in the virtualization features and I demonstrate how it works with Docker in this video. Docker is a container solution for running virtual machines that are isolated from the main operating system but run very efficiently with no need to preallocate resources. Docker enables services like blogging platforms and databases servers as well as full operating systems like Ubuntu. This drive also does well with media playback thanks to its HDMI output that supports 24p video as well as DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD via Kodi. The big difference between the 251A and the 251+ is that the A has a dual core processor and the + has a quad core. This video (and the one I did on the 251+) are barely scratching the surface on the feature set here. I’ve had my QNAP TS-870 NAS for some time now, while it’s been running fine with the default 2GB of RAM and Intel Celeron dual core CPU, I decided that I wanted to be able to do more so I have obtained an Intel i5-3450S quad core CPU and 16GB of SODIMM memory and covered the process of performing the upgrade. There is a good chance that you (yes, you reading this) are one of the people that were looking to buy a new NAS solution at the end of 2020 and found ... nothing was released. Yes, there was a tonne of high-end enterprise rackmounts, along with a bundle of new software improvements - but for the home or small business owner, the NAS scene was pretty quiet. It can upgraded to 8 gigabytes of RAM which is needed when running some of the more extreme tasks like video serving and OS virtualization. It also has an HDMI output with a very nice user interface when connected to a monitor or television. Plex Home Theater as well as Kodi are accessible from there. It plays back Blu Ray MKV files very well with no issues, although it does not support frame rates, Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD formats. Regular Dolby Digital and DTS do work. Like other NAS devices it's not well suited as Plex server if you have a videos that need to be transcoded in real time to target devices. Real time encoding works much better on the Qnap native apps. The reason is that Plex is not optimized for the Celeron processor running on the Qnap. But I was surprised to see that the drive is capable of running Windows in a virtual machine environment on the box! Qnap offers a free virtualization utility for the NAS that effortlessly booted up a copy of Windows 10. This is a very feature complete NAS that is definitely worth considering - especially if you have a few servers you'd like to replace that don't need a lot of processing power to do their tasks.
