Synology DS1821+ NAS Review Even to the most casual follower of network-attached storage, 2020 has been a fantastically truncated year of new hardware releases. This desktop NAS is geared towards prosumers looking to take advantage of the Synology Diskstation Manager (DSM) software, as well as working from a more flexible and adaptive hardware platform. Finding a place in the storage portfolio between the DS1621+ and DS1621xs+, this system arrives with all of the hardware benefits of the former but allows the user to save money and add flexibility over the latter. One potential benefit that’s highlighted to improve performance considerably multiple users is to upgrade the RAM (Random Access Memory) in the Synology NAS drive. The Synology DS920+ 4-Bay NAS Drive Hardware Review When the new Synology Diskstation series was revealed a few weeks ago, I think it was safe to say that it got peoples attention! The previous 18+ series of NAS had been around since September 2017 and many users were starting to get worried about choosing the older generation or holding out for a brand new announcement of something bigger and better to come. During this time, the unit that seemed to get the most mention, was the DS920+, a follow up to the remarkably popular DS918+ (possibly one of the most popular diskstation NAS they have ever put out) and one that provides a fantastic balance of hardware on day 1, upgradability down the line and excellent access to the award-winning Diskstation Manager (DSM) software platform. The full release date of the Synology DS920+ NAS is still to be confirmed in Europe and the US, however, you can still find it listed for sale in some regions of the world. Which brings me to today's review of the Synology DS920+ NAS, which is currently on very limited sale in Japan. Thanks to the wonderful world of the internet, worldwide logistics and most of all, the huge assistance of 'Takeo from Tokyo' - find this hero on Reddit here) I can bring you the hardware review (software review coming soon) of the brand new expandable 4-Bay from Synology and their 2020 series. As mentioned previously, this new NAS is in someway a good jump forward in hardware abilities, and a smaller step in others. There is no denying that it is one of the best NAS drives they have put out for a while, but the main questions to answer in today's review are, is this a better choice of the DS918+ NAS that came before it (and perhaps might be a pinch cheaper now) and if you are a current owner of the DS918+, is the DS920+ enough of an upgrade to warrant trading up? The setup and install of the Synology DS1517+ Server. The Synology NAS 5 bay Diskstation provides data storage. Perfect home or small business NAS. This model replaces the old 1515+. This Network Attached Storage will mainly be used for backing up recorded Sim Racing Gameplay, created content, videos, photos and music. I will look into adding application and more functions to this unit. Specs of the DS1517+ NAS Intel Quad Core 8gb RAM 2x 6TB NAS HHD PCI Express slot - for Dual M.2 SSD or 10GB Ethernet card. Starting with 2 x 6TB drives and will expand later as we require more storage. Some of the features that I will be testing out later will include: The USB Copy function - where files can be automatically saved to the server via the USB ports. Great for uploading photos from a camera. This is where the front USB port will be useful. A media center to stream movies to mobile devices or the TV. The Synology Diskstation has a wide variety of applications that can be installed. - Share files with anyone, anywhere, no matter what device. - Easily access files, services, and applications from anywhere. - Synchronize data across multiple devices with your own cloud. - Stream multi media photos movies and music to mobile devices or TV's - Surveillance Record live feeds from IP cameras. - Protect data with backups. The DS1815+ can be upgraded with up to 16GB of RAM (although Synology only officially supports up to 6GB). This video shows you how to install the two 8GB RAM chips required for maxing out your DiskStation’s memory. Note: Do this at your own risk! Removing the inner RAM chip will void your warranty, according to Synology. There’s also a risk of damaging your NAS by static shock. Always ground yourself before touching exposed circuit boards or RAM chips. If you don't already have Synology Assistant installed (for running memtest) you should be able to find it on Synology's website at this link: +#utilities

Once you have installed the 10Gbe network card into the Synology NAS and connected it directly to your 10 Gbe network card on your computer via a 10 Gbe compatible network cable, you can now proceed to visit the main page of your Synology NAS or DiskStation. From here select the Main Menu and then Control Panel. Now click on Network and then the Network Interface tab. Here you should see a LAN connection that has 10 Gb enabled. This will have a dedicated IP address which you need to use to connect directly to your Synology NAS for the 10 Gb speeds. Copy this IP address and enter it directly in to File Explorer on the connected computer after TWO backslashes. Now you should see the shares available on the NAS. Perform a copy test using a large file from the computer to one of the folders. This should now perform a copy much faster but bear in mind that the drive speed and interface could be a limiting factor to the speed. In this example we're using a SATA SSD on the Synology which tops out about 550 Mbs. And that's it. You can now proceed to setup a Network Drive for quick and easy access using the direct connection to the Synology NAS DiskStation.
