It's been a while since I deployed Skaro, my beefy RS816 NAS. For a while I've been looking for a good capacity backup solution to work in conjunction with Skaro to give me peace of mind. I managed to grab an RS214 on eBay used for an excellent price. It's an older generation model, but perfect for my needs as an automated backup solution. I remember not so long ago when, if someone asked me to recommend a NAS for business in a rackmount chassis, the choice was clearly a QNAP server. This was because when push came to shove, the hardware was just better on a QNAP NAS. Yes, the software on the Synology seems more fluid, but it still just a more tweaked version of the DSM software home users were enjoying already and wasn’t as good as the 3rd party software enterprise users were using and what they wanted was a powerful platform on which to run it. Synology RS816 Depth compared Fast forward a few years to 2018 and things have changed A LOT. Both brands have much more enterprise-level hardware and software options and alongside this, released a number of value and mid-range rackmount NAS that supplies the physical build the users needs, but leverages between internal hardware, storage and connections in different units, so you can spend more efficiently. A prime example of this kind of cost balancing is the Synology RS819 RackStation NAS – a new NAS that I have been informed of for much, much later in 2018. This tutorial covers how to setup and configure a brand new Synology NAS for the very first time! There are written instructions that accompany this video (found below), but we will first go over the initial setup on how to set up and install DSM, create a storage pool/volume, set a static IP address, and finally create a shared folder. We will then shift to data protection and monitoring, where we will set up a data scrubbing schedule, configure snapshots, create a recycle bin emptying schedule, install the storage analyzer, then set up and configure a UPS. Finally, we will focus on security and set up DSM automatic updates, change the default HTTP/HTTPS ports, enable denial-of-service (DoS) protection, enable auto-block, configure two-factor authentication, and finally set up Synology's firewall. This is an extremely in-depth tutorial with additional items listed in the written instructions.
