And lastly my driveway. Unfortunately, I don’t have easy access into the 2 sections of soffit and I don’t want to drill holes in these and damage them. Since I move cameras around so much and I’m always upgrading, I don’t want to replace soffit, because for me, it’s not a fun activity. Instead I’m going to use the top of this pillar as my install location but I need to get my network cables up there and protect the wires and connections. So, here’s the plan. I’ll use direct burial cables and run them in conduit from my basement, out the wall and down into the ground. They will exit the conduit and travel about 8 feet then renter conduit and travel up the pillar and then terminate inside of exterior junction boxes. I will then mount the cameras on the junction box covers. This keeps the cables safe from the elements and gives them a neat, finished look. It also prevents anyone from sneaking up and snipping them. I can even replace the camera in the future with only damaging the junction box covers, which can easily be replaced. Reolink does sell junction boxes for this very purpose, with pre-drilled holes to match the camera mounts. I will be using standard electrical junction boxes from home depot because I need a different configuration of side holes, plus, with standard boxes, you have many more accessories and options. Let me just say that running wires can be challenging in any camera install project, especially if your home or business is already built and the walls are finished. Every situation is different and I do review a couple in my planning video. It depends on your abilities and comfort level. There are many approaches to completing this task, but today, I’ll be digging trenches, drilling holes in my house and installing conduit. I’ll install the conduit with the network cables pre-installed. Once this is stood up next to the pillar, I will run the cables inside to a patch panel. Once the junction boxes are installed, the cables can now be terminated with RJ-45 connectors. To install the cameras, I will need to place the junction box cover on first, followed by the mount. The cables roll up nicely into the junction box and can be sealed. Lastly, I show some sample 4K footage from day and night. Looks better than I hoped. It’s another Reolink product, and for those of you who follow my channel know I love using their products because of their quality hardware, easy to use app with remote access, simple install and setup process and awesome price-point. This is a 4K system, including 4 turret style cameras and a Network Video Recorder (NVR). Today we’ll dive into the box and see what’s included and talk about the system specifications. This will be the first of a few videos I will be presenting on this system. Today is all about introducing you this system’s components and their purpose. We’ll also discuss the technical specifications, so you know exactly what you’re getting if you purchase this system. This setup will cost you $530US but often goes on sale for under 500. It offers 24/7 recording of up to 8x4K security cameras. It comes pre-installed with a 2TB hard drive which is expandable to 2x 4TB drives. To put that into perspective, with the 4 cameras included, recording at 4K, you can store about a week’s worth of continuous recording on a 2TB drive. This system maxes out an 8TB, which gives you about a month. Once the disc is full, oldest data will be deleted and replaced with new. Like I mentioned, there are 4xD800 4K cameras included. If you require additional IP cameras, Reolink offers several other styles and resolutions. On the Reolink site, they tell you if the camera will work with their NVR, like this one here does. But the Argus indicates that it will not work, so keep an eye out for that prior to ordering additional cameras. We’ll walk through the initial steps required to get the NVR up and running and review some issues you may run into. I’ll connect the cameras to the back of the NVR with the supplied cables and run through the NVR initiation process, to ensure the cameras are working as expected and that we can record footage to the internal hard drive. I like to verify this basic functionality before installing the cameras in their permanent location to ensure all parts are working. On first start up, the NVR will bring us into a setup wizard, which is exactly what we want, guidance or help getting the system functional. Reolink goes a little overboard with the wizard for an initial setup. They take us down a pretty long complicated and technical path which is not required for an initial setup, without including help text or guidance along the way, as we would expect to see from a help assistant tool. We’re going to skip over those unnecessary sections as this video is about getting the basics functional, before proceeding to the outdoor installation. We’ll revisit those complex settings in a future video from the NVR’s main menu. On the first screen, I am asked to select a language. I’ll leave that as English. Next, I need to setup the account for the user “Admin”. I need to create a password of at least 6 characters. Too bad you couldn’t connect a keyboard here for the setup process. I tried and it doesn’t work. Also, to make capital letters, or numbers, click the little “ab” icon in the text box. With that said, there will be a learning curve to figure out these oddities of the user interface. Also, “Enter” should read as “Ok” as it simply closes the keyboard and doesn’t actually submit the form, like an “Enter” key would. You can see that all 4 of the connected cameras were just automatically recognized and activated by the NVR with no input for me. That’s an awesome sign and even better that they were automatically detected and added. Level is the level of access this account should have. It’s disabled because this is the admin account needs to have the highest level of control and its setup first. With the Enable Password checkbox checked, this mean you will need to enter the password when accessing the NVR system directly. I will leave that off. At the bottom of this dialog we have “Display wizard when booting up”. This will show the wizard on boot up every time I start the NVR. I will leave that off and if I need to revisit it, there is a wizard button on the main menu bar. These options are available in the main menu anyways. We run through the remaining steps/screens in the wizard: General configuration, Hard disk management, Network configuration, Device list, Email configuration, UID, DDNS configuration, System time configuration, and DTS Configuration. Lastly, we open the NVR’s menu and do some final configurations to the IP Camera screen and then format the hard drive on the Records screen. When then verify the NVR is continuously recording and set up a recording schedule. More videos to come on the configuration and I will be installing this setup outdoor in my next video.
