What is the Best NAS hard drive of the Year - Synology DS119J vs QNAP TS-131P NAS - Best Low Price and Low Power NAS Drives - As two of the biggest names in network attached storage (NAS), it can often be hard to choose between QNAP and Synology NAS drives for your home or business needs. One of the biggest hurdles that many people come across first is the pricetag. Despite the fact that NAS is not a new concept, for many users who have been using low capacity free or monthly subscription 3rd party clouds, such as DropBox and Google Drive, the idea of spending literally hundreds of pounds on a private NAS drive can be very daunting. Add to this that the storage needs of most budget aware buyers are generally much smaller than most, the appeal of smaller, better value and lower tier solution is rather high, and it is for that reason that NAS devices such as the DS118 and TS-131p have been released. These devices are geared much more towards those lower spec buyers of network storage. Although the price point of these devices is very similar, their hardware and software abilities differ quite wildly and this can make choosing between the Synology DS118 and QNAP TS-131p quite tough. So, below I have compared these two NAS, along with their strengths and weaknesses, in order to find out which NAS best suits your data storage needs. Let’ take a look. Synology DS118 vs QNAP TS-131P – Who Buys a 1-Bay NAS? Both the DS118 and TS-131p are 1 Hard Drive (HDD) or Solid State Drive (SSD) NAS servers. This means that options like RAID protection and hot-swapping/adding media at a later date are not available. However, what makes a 1 bay appealing to many buyers are features such as very, very low noise, lower energy consumption (even in 24×7 use), compact chassis, high portability and discretion. In the last few years, popular ways I have seen 1-Bay QNAP and Synology NAS be used are: On house-boats where power consumption is monitored considerably As network backup’s to another NAS system in confined locations (cupboards, sheds, etc) In surveillance setup’s where storage needs to be discreet and hidden For low-end DLNA streaming in nthe home for the family to Smart TVs and Home Consoles There are many other uses, but these situations are the ones I am seeing more commonly featuring a 1-Bay NAS, such as the DS118 and TS-131p. It is also worth highlighting that, despite their lack of multiple drives inside and RAID support, both the QNAP TS-131P and the Synology DS118 feature network backup software (so you can back up the NAS to other network drives) or 3rd party cloud migration+syncronization (so you can back up the NAS offsite and encrypted, or visa-versa). Actual repair starts at ~ Do you have problems with your QNAP NAS suggesting that the hard drives are failing? It's possible (or to tell you the truth, even more probable) that it's actually a problem with one or more of the MOSFET transistors on the backplane. In my case it all started with the QNAP reporting drive 2 has failled. I replaced it with a brand new unit, but almost immediatelly it also started reporting errors. I have therefore removed it and reduced the size of my RAID. Unfortunatelly shortly after I also started seeing errors on drive 3 whilst drive 1 dissapeared entirelly from the list of disks seen through the controll pannel (even though on the QNAP case the LED for this disk was green) Unfortunatelly my QNAP is long past warranty coverage and reading on the internet how costly is the backplane replacement/repair, and that this does not prevent the problem from reoccuring I started looking for a DIY solution. Researching the subject it turns out, it's quite common for the MOSFET transistors AP4957AGM / 4957AGM (responsible for the sequential power-up of the hard drives) to fail, in all the different NAS units, in which these are used. I therefore decided to buy these transistors and try to replace them myself In the meantime, taking into account that these are not critical (I was surprised that they aren't involved in any way in the „hot-swap” functionaliy of the disks) and reading into the specification, I decided that instead of replacing these, I will short the relevant pins to provide a constant-on power supply to the drives. Of course I don't recommend this solution and advise that you properly replace the failed MOSFETs, even if it means that in the future you likelly might need to do it again ... and again. As a disclaimer you also need to understand that I don't take any responsibility for your repair attempts and any damage which might arise out of it, no matter which repair method you choose. Ps. BUY NOW TS-453Be: TVS-872XT: TVS-872N: TB3 Cable: 10GBe Adapter: D-Link WIFI Adapter: COMPANION VIDEOS Which RAID?: QNAP Tech Day: TVS-872N Review: TVS-472XT Review: TS-453Be Review: In-Depth Setup Guide: CLOUD BACKUPS G Suite's Business Plan offers Unlimited Storage: SUMMARY A NAS allows you to connect multiple computers to storage at the same time, they also contain their own processor to do work for you in the background without needing to hog the resources of your current computer. So for example you can get them to backup your data to the cloud and scan the hard drives for errors and viruses - allowing your computer to focus on your work at hand. TS-453Be The cheapest NAS presented here is the TS-453Be which is great as a first NAS and unlike units from other manufacturers it contains a PCIe upgrade slot to allow you to install a SSD/10GBe expansion card when you need extra speed. TS-453Be: TVS-x72XT The current kings of NAS at the moment is the TVS-x72XT range containing the fastest connections built in and a powerful 8th gen Intel processor to handle the fastest performance - yes performance is improved with a better processor. TVS-872XT: TVS-x72N A budget range of the TVS-x72XT which excludes 10GBe and Thunderbolt 3, however depending on the deal you can find - over in Australia I've found them listed at some retailers A$1,000 cheaper than the XT range, so for a value deal you can grab one and use one of the PCIe slots to upgrade to 10GBe yourself and you're set. TVS-872N: WHAT IS RAID RAID0 - Uses all drives to create one large storage space. RAID5 - Uses one of the drives for protection in case of drive failure - so you don't use all your data. RAID6 - Uses two of the drives for protection - better safety, slightly slower speeds. THUNDERBOLT 3 These NAS drives are easy to get up and running, however the hard drives in NAS systems are noisy and the current longest cables you can get are only 2 meters in length, so while it's great for temporary usage, I recommend using a 10GBe ethernet cable with a Thunderbolt 3 adapter instead - that way you get up to 100 meters in length. Cable: Adapter: 10GBe The current standard in performance speed, while you'll only get these speeds with 4 or more hard drives operating at RAID0, with a fast enough processor, it's a good idea to aim for these cables as they go up to 100 meters in length and as you grow out your system your speeds will improve. Cable: 10GBe to TB3 Adapter: thunderbolt+3+adapter WHY NOT A DAS? They hog your computers resources, only allow one connection at a time, and the cable length is limited so they can be a very noisy solution. WHICH HARD DRIVES? I've been using Seagate Ironwolf Pro drives for the past few years, they have large capacities at fast operating speeds. Seagate IronWolf Review: WIFI All NAS systems I've used require a direct connection to a router or a WIFI dongle to connect to the internet. Connecting to the internet is a security risk, however if used cautiously with good security practices, it is great for accessing a NAS from both over the Wifi or over the Internet when required. Alongside the release of the NVMe focused TBS-464 back in late October, the next unit in this series to arrive is the incredibly unique and unusual QNAP TS-364 NAS Drive. Today I want to review this rather different NA system and ultimately answer three main questions, 1) Is this a suitable alternative to a 2/4-Bay? 2) Is this TOO niche, even for a subject that is already as niche as NAS? And 3) Ultimately does it deserve your data?
