Buy it on Amazon - (affiliate link) Seagate just released their new Personal Cloud Network Attached Storage device (NAS). This new line of products will replace the Seagate Central product that we reviewed a year or two ago. That may present a problem for more technical savvy users who want to have more control over what the device does. Sharing permissions are entirely user based - so creating a user also creates a file share for that user. There is no way to share folders between users, so the only option to work collaboratively is to use the drive's "public" folder that is accessible to all registered users on the drive. I don't like that each user has to set up their own backup schedule. It would be nice for the head administrator to be able to initiate a device-wide backup on a regular interval. It functions as well as other network attached storage devices on a local network. I like their new "S-Drive" application that allows the disk to be access directly through Windows or Mac when not on the local network. It acts as a mini-VPN service that provides end-to-end encryption for accessing the drive remotely. It has some rough edges still but it's a great way to provide full OS level access to the drive when away from home. The mobile app is also a bit rough and needs some work. Photos are really blurry and don't take advantage of the full resolution that modern smart phone and tablet displays can provide. The interface could use some polishing too. Performance is good and about on par with other NAS drives at this price point. But on balance this is the simplest NAS device I've seen. It is incredible that 10 2TB platters and 20 heads can fit inside a drive enclosure. However, Seagate accomplished this utilizing CMR technology and by substituting helium for the environment within the drive. This new IronWolf Pro 20TB is around 25MB/s faster at reading and writing than the 18TB variant, has a 2TB more storage capacity, and uses less power. All of these benefits are only slightly more expensive than the 18TB option. It can be used in any PC or NAS that accepts SATA drives of that spec because it is exclusively designed as a SATA 6GB/s connected drive. The presence of RV sensors, which are specialized accelerators that can be used to determine adjustments depending on thermal changes, is another intriguing aspect of this system. Even slight changes in the part sizes can have an impact when data density levels are this high, but this design takes that into account. If there is one component of the IronWolf Pro 20TB that worries us, it is the definition of a workload of 300TB annually. Even so, there are several compelling reasons to choose this model over the 18TB model and the smaller capacities in each series that go beyond simply being bigger. Next is the Toshiba N300. The rising business was taken into consideration when designing the N300 NAS Internal Hard Drive. They can provide when speed, dependability, and performance are most important. It is built to handle heavy data workloads in a multi-RAID NAS environment, and its huge cache size and 7200 RPM speed enable it to give rapid data transfer speeds of up to 274 MB/s. Even better, it comes with built-in shock, rotational vibration, and heat protection controls that detect and correct for these factors, as well as error recovery controls that assist minimize important downtime and enable you to retrieve your data whenever you need it. Technically any hard drive (HDD) these days can be installed inside a network attached storage device. In order to use any hard drive in your NAS, you will need to make sure it is the following: SATA connectivity (so some Enterprise drives will also support SAS) At least 5400rpm or higher otherwise you there will be lag during access which only gets worse, the more drives you add. at least 120GB and above in capacity, as often applications and NAS operating systems, plus updates, will be well over 50-80GB alone over the years At least 64MB cache just above covers it! A long time ago (about 20 years at least) buying hard drives was much easier, as the technology was significantly less evolved. The difference between one hard drive and another could be the capacity, physical, size or the interface - that is about it! But much like any other kind of technology, over time hardware designers were able to improve it, make it more efficient, increase the storage, speed up the access and all the while sticking with the same 3.5" physical scale. The result of all this development was that tailored/designed drives arrived that were geared internally towards specific tasks (thereby allowing designers to focus the HDDs development towards one specialization more than others). Fast forward to 2022/2023 and you find that the HDD market is considerably more diverse and brands have much more layered portfolios of drives and one big, BIG area of hard disk development was with NAS/Server HDD media. These are drives that are designed to be on 24x7, be prepared to spin up very quickly with little notice, be better suited to being deployed in larger quantities together (i.e RAID configurations made up of many drives) and all the while combating vibration and increased temperatures to maintain a healthy and stable level of use at all times. Today I want to look at three hard drives that are designed for large-scale NAS deployment (such as 8-24-bay rackmount and 8-12+ bays desktop NAS systems), as all three are the current popular choice for this kind of NAS system. There are the long-established HDD vendor drives, the WD Red Pro series and Seagate Ironwolf Pro range, and there is the NAS-brand labelled Synology HAT5300 series (built on Toshiba MG06/06/08 Enterprise series, but with Synology firmware in services included). With a new generation of NAS Hardware arriving from Synology in 2022/2023, as well as a change in support and compatibility listings by the brand in several of their releases, now is a very good time to take a look at how these three NAS HDDs compare in design, utility, performance and value. With WD and Seagate having a considerable amount of history in their Red Pro and Ironwolf Pro ranges respectively in the NAS industry, many users are still unsure about the Synology HAT5300 and whether they should make the switch, design its shift in architecture towards a more enterprise build (arguable closer to Ultrastar and Seagate EXOs, than Red or Ironwolf). This 8TB drive works using a SATA III 6 Gb/s interface, a 256MB cache, and a rotational speed of 7200 rpm, all of which help guarantee uninterrupted data transfers with a sustained rate of up to 198 MB/s.
