Asustor Drivestor 2 (AS1102T) Review: Best Beginner NAS? Almost
The Drivestor 2 represents great value for money with connectivity out of the box, though you'll need to use fast SSDs or RAID 0 take advantage of that. There are some performance limitations with the non-expandable 1GB RAM, but overall it's a great beginner package.

NAS Brands in 2021 – Which One Should You Choose?
Buying your first Network Attached Storage (NAS) device can be a remarkably daunting task! Even for the most technologically knowledgable, a NAS is a very different kind of device than most of the hardware in your environment. At its heart, it is just a computer (like most things are when you break them down to the basics) that is built for a specific task. However, there are numerous elements of a NAS (such as it always being ON, the constant remote accessibility and focus on storage primarily) that set it apart from most other devices, and this si where a lot of people get a bit intimidated by it. There is always the option of using cloud services, such as DropBox, Google Drive, OneDrive and more, but these are often paid monthly subscription services, involve your data being shared across other services and (most worrying of all) leaves your precious data in a position to be used for analytics without your knowledge OR open to hacking because of the sheer size of the target. Add to this the fact that in most cases, a severed connection to the internet means a severed connection to your data, and the appeal of moving away from 3rd party cloud and on to a NAS is pretty clear. The industry of NAS has been in constant growth for over 30 years, with big players like HP, Dell and IBM steadily losing the home and SMB market to the likes of Synology, QNAP and more. The brand diversity in the field of NAS servers has continued to grow right up until 2021, with the benefit that the way you can interact with your data, what NAS devices can do and the price point of this technology being exceedingly affordable (with fully featured solutions WITH storage media arriving as low as £200). So, today I want to talk about what NAS is, what a NAS can do, and which NAS Brand you should consider buying in 2021.

Does the New Nimbustor 4 NAS from Asustor Perform?
As long as I have been in the NAS industry, I can say with confidence that there has been one single constant - gigabit ethernet (1Gbe) via copper (RJ45) has been present on every single device up to this point. From small little DLNA media NAS boxes, all the way upto enterprise-grade rackmounts, the humble 1Gbe port has always been there. Even when a brand has included large 10Gbe ports, it has always been largely outnumbered by 1Gbe ports. This is understandable, the network market hugely features this default port, but with file sizes always getting bigger and increased access speeds being required, it is fair to say that 1Gbe is starting to look rather out of its depth. It is for this reason (or similar) that Asustor's newest generation of NAS drives for home and business in 2019/2020 have taken the very bold move of completely eliminating the 1Gbe RJ45 ports, and instead, making the jump to ports by default instead. I have already touched on this previously on the build-up to, and during, the Computex 2019 event - highlighting why this move into 2.5 gigabit ethernet is such a big, BIG deal, but today I finally have a Nimbustor 4 here in the office and am going work my way through it's hardware, it's software and how the new AS5304T NAS compares with likewise rivals units from Synology and QNAP. Today is the Hardware review and the main question I want to answer is whether the Nimbustor 4 is a gimmick or a genuine game-changing NAS server that will be the start of a new kind of network attached storage. Let's get to work.
Pick Up your Asustor Nimbustor 4 AS5304T NAS from - ~69697
When I first unpacked the shipping container to get to the Nimbustor 4, I was pleasantly surprised by the retail packaging. I shouldn't be - Asustor has always been very graphical in their packaging, going to good lengths to detail what the units can do, the hardware specs, the software specs and generally creating a very appealing and engaging retail design. I often comment warmly on the attention many companies make on retail packaging, despite the fact these devices are almost always purchased from online stores (so by the time you see the packaging, you have already purchased it), it would be a dull, dull world indeed if everything arrived in default brown box packaging (do you hear me Synology?). The full review on (including more info, tests, and links to specs, installation instructions, and some general usage tips):
From our review:
Today we are doing our first Network Attached Storage (NAS) review and it comes from a company that is relatively new to the market but has a major heavyweight parent company.
ASUSTOR was founded in 2011 and is a subsidiary of the Taiwanese giant ASUS (pronounced AZUS if you were wondering), one of the largest computer and hardware manufacturers in the world. Unlike ASUS which has a whole range of computing and electronic products, ASUSTOR focus specifically on network-attached storage solutions.
Although it might not be as familiar name in the industry as Qnap and Synology, since its creation ASUSTOR became a viable alternative to those brands and the drive that we will be testing today called the AS4004T is not only competitive with some of the offerings from those brands, it is possibly a leader in its class - at least in some respects as we shall see later on.
Before we start, an important note. There is no way that we can cover all of the different aspects of this unit. Covering everything will require several lengthy videos and probably a lot more knowledge than we have about networks, so in this review, we will focus on what we have found to be relevant for us as photographers, videographers and content creators and we shall share links for more information for people who will want to dive deeper.
Let's start by taking a quick look at the unit externally. The AS4004T has four 3.5" bays and is quite compact, measuring 22cm (about 8.5") deep over 16cm by 16cm (or 6.2") in height and weight. It has a pretty substantial power brick which we connected to a UPS (which is highly recommended, but more on this later).

TrueNAS Core on an Asustor NAS - Complete Installation Guide
How to Install TrueNAS Coe on an Asustor NAS Drive – Step-By-Step Guide
Most new or relatively inexperienced NAS users can be separated into two clear categories. There are those that want to get their hands dirty, spend sensibly on a DiY system in order to take advantage of community-built platforms such as TrueNAS Core, and then there are those that are happy to pay extra for the system to arrive prebuilt, but also know that the software that it comes with can be a little more restrictive. However, it is NOT impossible to have the best of both! Today, I want to show you how to turn the remarkably affordable NAS solutions from Asustor (one of the best Value NAS in the market right now, even when the 2022 range is pretty well hardware equipped with NVMe, , Embedded Graphics CPUs and more) into a TrueNAS Core ZFS Powered NAS system. It is considerably easier than you might think, is very easy to reverse and allows you to have the full customization and freedom of TrueNAS Core, a prebuilt 24×7 designed server system and all whilst still getting exceptional value for money for the hardware. Cool right? Let’s begin the step-by-step guide.

So you're curious about the Asustor Lockerstor8, aka the AS6508T? Great, because today Asustor has provided Apacer with one such NAS. In this video, Apacer staff show you what the lockerstor8 can do, how it is meant to be used, and how Apacer NAS SSDs stand out from the competing brands. In today's video. Apacer has installed the PP3480, the PPSS25 and the PPSS80 NAS SSDs as well as Traditional sata Hard Drives.
In today's benchmark we use NextCloud to measure how much time it takes each drive to load a photo with and without adding an M.2 cache to the hard drives and PP3480 as a way to perform a benchmark.
It's also worth noting that the PPSS80, the PP3480, and the PPSS25 are all three built to last much longer than ordinary consumer-grade SSDs, and should be considered as a storage solution for a Network Attached Storage (NAS) vs. an ordinary consumer SSD, especially when editing 4k video or migrating files between multiple users on a frequent basis.

ASUS Goes NAS..!? ASUSTOR AS4004T 10Gbps $360 NAS Review(!)
Here is something that in the NAS world represents such good value for money, that I really couldn't fault the AS4000T for anything... The implementation of the UI, the features, the speeds, the consistency, the build quality, the hot swap bays, the automatic plug and play and extra features like making it a mobile HTPC as well, really makes this thing so, so damn good, it is bound to be the perfect solution for anyone needing a NAS on that hits way above its price tag. Also if you only have the budget for a 1Gbps switch at the moment (and it supports aggregation) then you can link up the 3 Nic Ports and get 3x the speeds too. ASUSTOR - Nailed it!

Thanks to a sharp rise in the number of people using cloud storage options like Apple’s iCloud, Google Drive or even a backup solution like Backblaze, having your own NAS at home really isn’t all that necessary for a whole lot of people. But, for the small subset that want fast, local access to their data, or want to run their own basic servers for something like Plex, these two options from Asustor are one of the cheapest ways to do just that.

The ASUSTOR Lockerstor 4 Gen2 AS6704T is a beast with beastly options. The gual 2.5 gigabit nics and the option for a 10 gigabit ethernet port were huge sellers for me. I have my place wired for 2.5 gb/s ethernet, and this will give me the ability to upgrade to 10 gibabit if I want to. Also, the new Celeron N5105 is 30% faster than the previous generation model... I didn't think that would be a big deal, but my larger videos do play better now.

NAS Buyers Guide - Get It RIGHT First Time -
When it comes to brands that I discuss here on the NASCompares when discussing NAS, one brand that always seems to have always existed (yet doesn’t get the same level of online fame as its peers) is Asustor. Founded in 2011, they have well over a decade of solutions under their belt and every time we see periodic refreshes come around from all the brands (every 2-2.5 years or so), we have seen them either be the first to bring some new tech to the market OR be the one that manages to bridge the gaps in the portfolios of the bigger brands with one of their own solutions. Today I want to review exactly that kind of solution, the Asustor Lockerstor 4 Gen 2. Now, that ‘Gen 2’ but is really important and not just a generic mini upgrade. When the original Lockstor series arrived in 2020, it had numerous features that their competitors had BUT crucially managed to consolidate brand unique ones, such as BTRFS and M.2 Slots like Synology, yet an HDMI 4K Port, and an LCD display like QNAP – as I say, they always tend to bridge the gaps! The Lockerstor Gen 2 series arrives on the market 2+ years later and this new Gen 2 refresh brings upgrades to almost every single element of that hardware on offer (with only 1 real exception – and even then, it’s still tip-top). So, let’s take a closer look at that Asustor Lockerstor 4 Gen 2 NAS drive, see if ‘Gen 2’ is as good as it promises and whether this new NAS deserves your data?

Asustor CabinetStor and LockerStor NAS with 10Gbe, 2 5Gbe, Intel CPU 8 and 10 Bay
Brand New Asustor AS7108T, AS6508T, AS7110T and AS6510T NAS
Of all the NAS brands that will be present at Computex 2019 at the end of May, none have been so quick to promote their new range of devices than Asustor. Hot on the heels of the announcement of the new Intel-powered 2 and 4-Bay NAS for 2019, there will also be a new range of 8 and 10 Bay Desktop NAS arriving for small and medium business users. The new Cabinetstor and LockStor series of NAS server devices arrive with some great hardware innovations inside and out and only go further to highlight just how much Asustor has evolved over the last 2 years. The AS56 NAS series (AS6508T 8-Bay and AS6510T 10-Bay) features a robust business ready CPU and fast connectivity chassis, whereas the AS71 series from Asustor s (AS7108T 8-Bay and AS7110T 10-Bay) is geared more towards fast external hardware and much more powerful internal hardware. Though both are tweaked towards different users in their own way, BOTH arrive with some excellent file speed upgrade options right off the bat and both seem like idea business class NAS drives in 2019. Let’s take a closer look.
Asustor have released 8-Bay and 10-Bay desktop NAS drives previously and in the past, these have been designed to prioritize data transmission and stability, along with largely unparalleled storage potential across many, many bays. The new CabinetStor AS6508T and AS6510T arrive with an Intel Deverton CPU (NAS users will know them as Atom processors) which is a Quad Core processor that is supported with 4GB DDR4 memory (upgradable to 16GB). These are a well balanced and mid-range CPU+Memory combo and is designed for servers that require 24x7 business use (backs, file hosting and virtual environments).
The Asustor Lockstor AS7108T and AS7110T NAS drives, on the other hand, give you everything the CabinetStor range do, but even MORE so. Arriving with an Intel 8th generation i3-8100 4 Core processor, at per core, the Coffee Lake CPU is a beast! This processor is supported with 8GB of DDR4 memory and as well as doing everything that the Deverton CPU can do, it has far more advanced hyperthreading, embedded graphics and power vs efficiency. In real terms, it means it can do ALOT more than the AS6508T and AS6510T, with the added bonus the AS7108T and AS7110T has graphics support and uses less CPU % overall whilst doing it!
