Choosing the Right Memory for your Synology and QNAP NAS A network attached storage device, or NAS, is very similar to a regular desktop computer in so many ways. The QNAP TS-h1283XU-RP is a rackmount 2U NAS based on the company’s QuTS Hero architecture. QNAP QuTS Hero is a new operating system that combines QTS with a 128-bit ZFS file system and is aimed at optimizing performance and data protection. The new OS on the TS-h1283XU-RP NAS is said to deliver “server-grade performance” for use cases such as mission-critical file server, virtualization server, VDI, collaborative video editing, or efficient file backup and recovery applications. ZFS and QuTS hero give QNAP an opportunity to ship NAS systems for SMBs that are more hardened from a data integrity standpoint and offer more enterprise-style features, like data reduction and efficient snapshots. The QNAP TS-h1283XU-RP specifically, does this relatively economically as well. At a street price of $4k bare it’s not inexpensive, but for a 12-bay rackmount NAS with these capabilities, it’s not unreasonable either. The big question is around performance/workload matching. Performance in small block workloads wasn’t great, but the system handled big blocks pretty well for a SATA-based system. We’d prefer something with NVMe as a primary system, but for branch/remote offices or as a replication/backup target, the QNAP TS-h1283XU-RP does well. If you are a fan of NAS storage or are in the market for a solid piece of desktop data storage hardware, then there is a good chance that you have been looking at 8-Bay solutions. Arguably, at this capacity of storage (both in network-accessible and/or direct accessible varieties) that things get series. QNAP hat vor einiger Zeit mit dem TS-251C sein neustes NAS für den Heimbereich vorgestellt. Ich selbst hab hier ja schon ein TS-251 rumstehen, entsprechend interessiert war ich auch herauszufinden was der Unterschied zwischen TS-251 und TS-251C ist. Immerhin war die neue Version mit ca. 250 EUR ungefähr 70-80 EUR günstiger. Mittlerweile kosten beide Versionen mit ca. 300 EUR gleichviel. ## Unterschiede TS-251 und TS-251C Also der erste Punkt der gleich bei den ersten Bildern aufgefallen ist, sind die beiden fehlenden Festplattenschächte. Während man beim Ts-251 noch per Hotswap problemlos eine Platte rausziehen kann, muss man beim TS-251C erstmal das Gehäuse aufmachen, um dann die Platte rauszuschrauben. In Sachen Erweiterbarkeit geht es weiter. Der CPU ist zwar der selbe und auch der Speicher ist identisch, allerdings ist beim TS-251C keine Erweiterung des RAMs auf 4 GB vorgesehen. Hier sind dauerhaft nur 1 GB vorgesehen, wobei man das bestimmt erweitern kann, nur nicht halt mit einem zweiten RAM Slot. In Sachen LAN und Link-Aggregation (Nutzung beider LAN Ports) muss man beim TS-251C ebenfalls auf den zweiten Gigabit LAN Port verzichten. Wer viele USB 3.0 Platten hat, wird mit dem TS-251C ebenfalls keinen Spaß haben. Hier sind statt 2 USB 3.0 Ports nur noch einer eingebaut. Vielleicht hätte QNAP hier lieber mal auf einen USB 2.0 Port verzichten sollen. In der Abmessung sind die beiden NAS Brüder fast gleich groß,wobei das TS-251C mit seinen 166,6 x 85 x 218,4 mm ein paar mm kleiner ist als der Vorgänger. Das macht sich auch aufs Leergewicht mit seinen 0,94 kg (gegenüber 1,28 kg) bemerkbar. Neben dem kleineren Gehäuse ist auch der Stromverbrauch etwas geringer 7, 38 W im Ruhemodus (10,28 W) und 15,71 W im Betriebsmodus (19,22 W). Allein im ausgeschalteten Zustand verbraucht das TS-251Cetwas mehr Strom (0,7 W) als das TS-251 (0,47 W). ## Fazit TS-251 ode TS-251C ? Ich muss gestehen, wenn QNAP das TS-251C vor ein paar Monaten herausgebracht hätte, hätte ich wohl ohne zu zögern zu dieser Variante gegriffen, statt zum TS-251. Da ich nicht vor habe meine Festplatten regelmäßig auszuwechseln, noch mit irgendwelchen Virtual Machines zu arbeiten, könnte ich auf die Erweiterbarkeit des TS-251 verzichten. Von der Performance arbeitet in beiden Geräten der selbe Prozessor insofern muss man hier definitiv keine Abstriche machen. Auch das Thema 2. Gigabit Port ist nur dann relevant, wenn man diesen auch aktiv per Link-Aggregation nutzen will. Für den Heimgebrauch vermutlich kein Thema, für den Businessbereich greift man eh zu etwas größeren Geräten. Da die Geräte momentan beide ungefähr gleich viel kosten, würde ich doch eher zum TS-251 greifen. Das Mehrgewicht und etwas größere Gehäuse ist vernachlässigbar im Vergleich zur Upgradefähigkeit und der Hotswap Funktion der Platten.
