BUY NOW TS-453Be: TVS-872XT: TVS-872N: TB3 Cable: 10GBe Adapter: D-Link WIFI Adapter: COMPANION VIDEOS Which RAID?: QNAP Tech Day: TVS-872N Review: TVS-472XT Review: TS-453Be Review: In-Depth Setup Guide: CLOUD BACKUPS G Suite's Business Plan offers Unlimited Storage: SUMMARY A NAS allows you to connect multiple computers to storage at the same time, they also contain their own processor to do work for you in the background without needing to hog the resources of your current computer. So for example you can get them to backup your data to the cloud and scan the hard drives for errors and viruses - allowing your computer to focus on your work at hand. TS-453Be The cheapest NAS presented here is the TS-453Be which is great as a first NAS and unlike units from other manufacturers it contains a PCIe upgrade slot to allow you to install a SSD/10GBe expansion card when you need extra speed. TS-453Be: TVS-x72XT The current kings of NAS at the moment is the TVS-x72XT range containing the fastest connections built in and a powerful 8th gen Intel processor to handle the fastest performance - yes performance is improved with a better processor. TVS-872XT: TVS-x72N A budget range of the TVS-x72XT which excludes 10GBe and Thunderbolt 3, however depending on the deal you can find - over in Australia I've found them listed at some retailers A$1,000 cheaper than the XT range, so for a value deal you can grab one and use one of the PCIe slots to upgrade to 10GBe yourself and you're set. TVS-872N: WHAT IS RAID RAID0 - Uses all drives to create one large storage space. RAID5 - Uses one of the drives for protection in case of drive failure - so you don't use all your data. RAID6 - Uses two of the drives for protection - better safety, slightly slower speeds. THUNDERBOLT 3 These NAS drives are easy to get up and running, however the hard drives in NAS systems are noisy and the current longest cables you can get are only 2 meters in length, so while it's great for temporary usage, I recommend using a 10GBe ethernet cable with a Thunderbolt 3 adapter instead - that way you get up to 100 meters in length. Cable: Adapter: 10GBe The current standard in performance speed, while you'll only get these speeds with 4 or more hard drives operating at RAID0, with a fast enough processor, it's a good idea to aim for these cables as they go up to 100 meters in length and as you grow out your system your speeds will improve. Cable: 10GBe to TB3 Adapter: thunderbolt+3+adapter WHY NOT A DAS? They hog your computers resources, only allow one connection at a time, and the cable length is limited so they can be a very noisy solution. WHICH HARD DRIVES? I've been using Seagate Ironwolf Pro drives for the past few years, they have large capacities at fast operating speeds. Seagate IronWolf Review: WIFI All NAS systems I've used require a direct connection to a router or a WIFI dongle to connect to the internet. Connecting to the internet is a security risk, however if used cautiously with good security practices, it is great for accessing a NAS from both over the Wifi or over the Internet when required. It can upgraded to 8 gigabytes of RAM which is needed when running some of the more extreme tasks like video serving and OS virtualization. It also has an HDMI output with a very nice user interface when connected to a monitor or television. Plex Home Theater as well as Kodi are accessible from there. It plays back Blu Ray MKV files very well with no issues, although it does not support frame rates, Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD formats. Regular Dolby Digital and DTS do work. Like other NAS devices it's not well suited as Plex server if you have a videos that need to be transcoded in real time to target devices. Real time encoding works much better on the Qnap native apps. The reason is that Plex is not optimized for the Celeron processor running on the Qnap. But I was surprised to see that the drive is capable of running Windows in a virtual machine environment on the box! Qnap offers a free virtualization utility for the NAS that effortlessly booted up a copy of Windows 10. This is a very feature complete NAS that is definitely worth considering - especially if you have a few servers you'd like to replace that don't need a lot of processing power to do their tasks. QNAP czy SYNOLOGY? Takie pytanie zadaje sobie każda osoba, która poważnie myśli o zakupie serwera NAS. Który system NAS jest lepszy, QTS dostarczany przez QNAP czy DSM od Synology? W odcinku QNAP vs SYNOLOGY postarałem się podejść do rywalizacji pomiędzy tymi dwoma konkurencyjnymi rozwiązaniami bez żadnych uprzedzeń. Serwerów NAS Synology używałem od wielu lat. Dlatego przedstawiłem w odcinku porównanie z mojej perspektywy. Pokazałem jak w NAS QNAP wyglądają funkcję i aplikacje, z których korzystałem właśnie w serwerach NAS Synology i jakie są pomiędzy nimi różnice. Nie poruszałem tu funkcjonalności i aplikacji, które działają bardzo podobnie, czyli chociażby QNAP QSync czy Synology Drive, które działają na zasadzie prywatnej chmury danych. Skupiłem się głównie na różnicach, a jest ich całkiem sporo. Od podstawowej jaką jest system plików BTRFS stosowany w NAS Synology vs EXT4 w serwerach NAS QNAP po współpracę z UPS'em, obsługą Dockera czy Container Station, a na aplikacji do monitoringu IP czyli Synology Surveillance Station vs QNAP QVR Pro kończąc. Odcinek QNAP vs SYNOLOGY mam nadzieję pomoże wam dokonać wyboru, który dla Was będzie najlepszy. Das QNAP TS-251C ist ein NAS-System, das durch viele Features insbesondere im Home-Bereich interessant sein könnte. Wo die Stärken und Schwächen des TS-251C liegen, erfahrt ihr in unserem Test und Review. ►QNAP TS-251C: In dieser Box steckt das QNAP TS-251c. Zum Lieferumfang gehören neben dem Gerät selber ein Ladekabel und ein LAN-Kabel. Mehr nicht. Nach dem Auspacken sieht man: Beim Gerät handelt es sich um ein NAS-System, also eine Netzwerk-Festplatte. Die stellt man sich einfach irgendwo ins Haus, schließt sie an den Router an und kann von überall aus auf die Festplatte zugreifen. Soweit zur üblichen Funktion eines NAS-Systems. Das TS-251c kann allerdings noch etwas mehr als nur eine simple Speicherlösung zu sein. Das merkt man beispielsweise, wenn man sich die Schnittstellen des Geräts anschaut: Neben einem USB , zwei USB und einem LAN-Anschluss hat das NAS auch einen HDMI-Anschluss. Wozu das? Werden sich viele fragen. Der HDMI-Anschluss ermöglicht es, das NAS an einen Fernseher anzuschließen, um sich dort die gespeicherten Filme und Videos anzuschauen. Und hier könnte ein weiteres spezielles Feature hilfreich sein: Das TS-251c soll Videos in Echtzeit transkodieren, das heißt in andere Formate umwandeln, die für den Fernseher oder das Smartphone geeigneter sind. Ziel ist es, ein möglichst ruckelfreies Erlebnis zu schaffen – auch bei geringer Bandbreite. Klingt grandios, funktioniert allerdings nur in der Theorie wirklich reibungslos. In der Praxis zeigte sich, das Feature ist leider noch nicht ganz ausgereift Was degegen voll ausgereift ist, ist das QTS-System, eine Oberfläche, die es mit wenigen Klicks ermöglicht, Dateien hochzuladen, Apps zu installieren oder Anwendungen zu starten. Dabei scheint die Auswahl an Apps von Testgerät zu Testgerät immer größer zu werden. Gleichzeitig lassen sich auch wichtige Dinge wie Firmware-Updates installieren. In diesem Punkt ist QNAP der Konkurrenz tatsächlich teils voraus. Für einen stabilen Betrieb des NAS sorgen ein Intel Celeron-Prozessor mit 2,41 Ghz in Kombination mit einem GB RAM. Natürlich muss das System auch belüftet werden, damit die Komponenten nicht überhitzen. Der Lüfter ist aber interessanterweise kaum wahrzunehmen, man muss schon genau hinsehen – hören kann man ihn nämlich so gut wie gar nicht. Das ist ein dicker Pluspunkt des NAS-Systems: Es ist extrem leise und lässt sich damit auch bestens ins Wohnzimmer stellen. Nur die etwas nervigen Signaltöne beim Hoch- und Runterfahren könnten stören. QNAP findet übrigens, dass das System bestens für Kleinunternehmer und Home-Anwender geeignet ist. Wir sind der Meinung: Kleinunternehmen sind mit anderen Systemen besser beraten. Warum? Weil man beim TS 251C für viele Features bezahlt, die man im Unternehmen nicht braucht. Daneben sind Dinge wie der Festplattenaustausch nicht ganz simpel: Erst muss das komplette Gerät aufgemacht werden und dann kann man die Festplatten herausnehmen. Einfache Slots gibt’s hier leider nicht. Für Home-Anwender ist das QNAP TS-251C allerdings ein guter und zuverlässiger Begleiter mit jeder Menge Anwendungsmöglichkeiten. However, with this you get a Thunderbolt 3 connection and it actually performs. This means you can use both Thunderbolt ports to access data fast as well as 10gbe and wifi for over the network transfers. Regarding costs the x72XT range is a great deal as even though it feature a 2018 Intel 8th gen processor, the unit itself is only 10% more expensive than the cheapest 4 bay Thunderbolt 3 NAS drive on the market. Secondly, for its larger 8 bay unit the 872XT, it's a whole 30% cheaper than TVS-1282T3 but gives you 8th gen Intel 6 cores instead of the 7th gen found in the TVS-1282. Performance, was fast over Thunderbolt 3 and Wifi, on my current Atom processor based NAS drive, loading files and folders would take tens of seconds to load, however this unit felt like accessing my local hard drive. The Thunderbolt 3 connection to a JBOD HDD got read speeds of over 800MB/s... and 500MB/s for SSDs. Of course the SSD was 5x faster in write operations, the HDD performance was unexpected. Wifi dropped the performance down to 16MB/s, however file listings was still very fast. Setup, is pretty common sense once a few concepts were grasped. QNAP reserves around 70GB per storage pool and provides features to ensure the endurance and speed of SSDs by under-provisioning the drives as well as combining both drive mediums into a hybrid state to get the best of both worlds. Of course these options are all configurable and there's plenty of management tools available to feast on. My favourite extra as part of the eco-system is it's Hybrid Cloud Backup app which lets you store your Mac's Time Machine backups and backup your NAS drive to the cloud with stand out features such as compressed (bzip) and encrypted (openssl) uploads, saving you cloud storage space, bandwidth and adding an extra layer of security. Overall, I was very impressed with the unit. I have 4x 14TB Seagate Ironwolf and Ironwolf Pro drives on order alongside a 2m Thunderbolt 3 cable for various RAID configs, which I'll be featuring in the follow up video.
