The Synology RS1221+ and RS1221RP+ Rackstation NAS get closer to Release Good news for those of you who are STILL waiting for the release of the compact 8-Bay Synology rackmount, the RS1221+ nears release and we now have the official data sheet on the device with a release date scheduled for mid January 2021. Yes, the Synology RS1221+ (and also the RS1221RP+ of course with it’s redundant PSU) have been waiting in the wings for a while now, right the way back to the incidental leak of a RS1220+ last year that came to nothing. The appearance of the RS1221+ was already largely confirmed back in October 2020 (thanks again, to Stashman2000 on reddit) and now this release is becoming a great deal more concrete. Arriving with the internal architecture previously revealed on the DS1621+ and DS1821+, these two new Synology Rackstation devices are the first rackmount devices from the brand to feature the Ryzen V1500B server processor, as well as 4GB ECC DDR4 memory by default. This is combined with the half depth rackmount design (even on the 2x PSU model only increases the depth from 30cm to 40cm), PCIe Gen 3 x8 upgrade slot, 4x LAN and USB 3.1 Gen 1 that has featured on previous units in the RS12xx+ series. A nice middle ground between rackmount and desktop in both price and scale, the RS1221+ and RS1221RP+ are still pretty niche (in a genre of IT that is an niche as NAS, that IS pretty small). So, let’s have a good look at the contents of the data sheet and see if there is anything else new to learn. Some tips and tricks I found while setting up the DvbLink TV Server on my Synology NAS. If you are using the Synology VideStation application, you'll need to turn off its Digital TeleVision (or DTV) feature in order to install DvbLink TV Server. This is to free up the network connections to any network TV tuners, such as the HDHomeRun tuners I recently installed and also any USB TV tuners you might connect to your NAS. Then you can install DvbLink server and it'll take control of any TV tuners it can find. Turning off the VIdeoStation DTV features disables it's TV Recording playback function, so if you want to access your TV recordings in VideoStation, you need to add a new library pointing to the DvbLink recorded TV folder. You don't want to add any "video information" to the recordings via the VideoStation indexing feature. It'll generally make a royal mess of things randomly grabbing words out of program file names and using that to match with program database entries that are likely totally incorrect. Again, if you are using the Synology media server apps, those are served off the NAS IP address via DLNA. The DvbLink TV server also supports DLNA and it's off the same IP address, but a different port. Depending on your DLNA player, you may need to switch back and forth between those two DLNA servers to change content. In a player like Kodi, you can have multiple server connections simultaneously, so no need to switch between them. Buy it on Amazon - (affiliate link) I was curious how hard it might be to move from one Synology NAS to another without having to copy data over the network. It is actually pretty simple: just take the drives out of the old one and install them in the new one. This will work so long as the transfer process is moving from a smaller drive to a larger one. Single drive NAS devices cannot be moved to larger ones unfortunately. Some of the Synology apps like Video Station may have some difficulties moving over. This video features what was nearly a 14TB brick -- our Synology DS1515+ NAS that won't turn on or boot. Pressing the power button doesn't do anything. It won't turn on, the power button doesn't seem to do anything, and the power supply still checks as OK with a PSU tester. Apparently, these units had a very common failure from dying power supplies, motherboards, or other lower level issues. Major concerns include saving the RAID and all the data (which will primarily save time, as we do have a lot of it backed up), but also moving to a more reliable box going forward. We found out that the Synology NAS power supply uses the same ATX 24-pin power cable as a computer power supply, and so used that troubleshooting option to replace the DS1515+ PSU with something else.
