For the most part, it's a worthy contender thanks to its rugged build, fast performance, and equally vast number of features for home and small-business environments. In the end, in comparison with the Synology DS412+, I found that the QNAP TS-469 Pro's somewhat better hardware doesn't justify its much higher price, especially considering it doesn't offer the level of robustness and forward thinking found in the DS412+'s user interface and features. And if the Synology is not exactly for novices, the QNAP TS-469 Pro is definitely not for the faint of heart. Advanced users will still be comfortable with it, however, thanks to the well-organized Linux-based operating system. Design For a multiple-bay NAS server, nothing beats the TS-469's hardware design. The server is housed in a rugged aluminum case that's both good-looking and practical. The four hard-drive bays are accessible from the front with removable drive trays. These trays can be removed or inserted into the bay without any tools and can be securely locked in their place to prevent accidental opening. The server comes with two (identical) keys, one of which is needed for both locking and opening the trays. This in itself is very well thought out since if you could lock the trays without using the key, you'd risk misplacing the keys and being unable to open the trays. The Synology DS412+ has a similar drive bay design but without the locking option.

BUY NOW TS-453Be: TVS-872XT: TVS-872N: TB3 Cable: 10GBe Adapter: D-Link WIFI Adapter: COMPANION VIDEOS Which RAID?: QNAP Tech Day: TVS-872N Review: TVS-472XT Review: TS-453Be Review: In-Depth Setup Guide: CLOUD BACKUPS G Suite's Business Plan offers Unlimited Storage: SUMMARY A NAS allows you to connect multiple computers to storage at the same time, they also contain their own processor to do work for you in the background without needing to hog the resources of your current computer. So for example you can get them to backup your data to the cloud and scan the hard drives for errors and viruses - allowing your computer to focus on your work at hand. TS-453Be The cheapest NAS presented here is the TS-453Be which is great as a first NAS and unlike units from other manufacturers it contains a PCIe upgrade slot to allow you to install a SSD/10GBe expansion card when you need extra speed. TS-453Be: TVS-x72XT The current kings of NAS at the moment is the TVS-x72XT range containing the fastest connections built in and a powerful 8th gen Intel processor to handle the fastest performance - yes performance is improved with a better processor. TVS-872XT: TVS-x72N A budget range of the TVS-x72XT which excludes 10GBe and Thunderbolt 3, however depending on the deal you can find - over in Australia I've found them listed at some retailers A$1,000 cheaper than the XT range, so for a value deal you can grab one and use one of the PCIe slots to upgrade to 10GBe yourself and you're set. TVS-872N: WHAT IS RAID RAID0 - Uses all drives to create one large storage space. RAID5 - Uses one of the drives for protection in case of drive failure - so you don't use all your data. RAID6 - Uses two of the drives for protection - better safety, slightly slower speeds. THUNDERBOLT 3 These NAS drives are easy to get up and running, however the hard drives in NAS systems are noisy and the current longest cables you can get are only 2 meters in length, so while it's great for temporary usage, I recommend using a 10GBe ethernet cable with a Thunderbolt 3 adapter instead - that way you get up to 100 meters in length. Cable: Adapter: 10GBe The current standard in performance speed, while you'll only get these speeds with 4 or more hard drives operating at RAID0, with a fast enough processor, it's a good idea to aim for these cables as they go up to 100 meters in length and as you grow out your system your speeds will improve. Cable: 10GBe to TB3 Adapter: thunderbolt+3+adapter WHY NOT A DAS? They hog your computers resources, only allow one connection at a time, and the cable length is limited so they can be a very noisy solution. WHICH HARD DRIVES? I've been using Seagate Ironwolf Pro drives for the past few years, they have large capacities at fast operating speeds. Seagate IronWolf Review: WIFI All NAS systems I've used require a direct connection to a router or a WIFI dongle to connect to the internet. Connecting to the internet is a security risk, however if used cautiously with good security practices, it is great for accessing a NAS from both over the Wifi or over the Internet when required. With QuDedup technology that deduplicates the data at the source, the efficiency of multi-version backup to the destination storage is greatly improved while also optimizing storage utilization. Hybrid Backup Sync features QuDedup technology to deduplicate backup data at the source. With the overall data size reduced, required bandwidth and backup time is also saved. With QuDedup, you can reduce the RPO (Recovery Point Objective) and RTO (Recovery Time Objective) for your backup plan. When tested with a virtualization solution, QuDedup reduced the backup size by 75%. QuDedup supports block-level deduplication and data encryption on client devices. Deduplicated data is packaged and converted to .qdff files. Instead of viewing the deduplicated .qdff file using the NAS, you can install the QuDedup Extract Tool on your computer (Windows, Ubuntu, or macOS) and restore deduplicated files to their normal status. After backing up deduped data to a QNAP NAS, remote server, and cloud storage, not only can you restore the .qdff files and view them on your computer, you can also install the QuDedup Extract Tool on your cloud storage to view your backed-up and deduped files - greatly reducing the cloud data transfer cost. Deduped files can also be viewed and opened in File Station. Hybrid Backup Sync supports multiple version backup to cloud storage and remote NAS and allows you to set the number of backup versions to retain and their retention time. The more versions you back up reduces the risk of data loss. For first-time cloud migration, hardware appliances from cloud service providers can be used to quickly move terabytes of data, rather than transferring via the bandwidth-limited Internet. Hybrid Backup Sync provides the relink function which can establish a link between the on-premises original and the cloud copy, so you can continue incremental backup or synchronization tasks. This greatly boosts efficiency and makes migration to the cloud much easier. Hybrid Backup Sync supports the TCP BBR algorithm for congestion control that can greatly improve extranet data transfer speed. Businesses that use hybrid storage solutions can back up or sync their NAS-based files to the cloud with higher transfer speed, making offsite backup more efficient. Hybrid Backup Sync provides a secure-yet-flexible hybrid cloud backup solution, allowing you to leverage private and public clouds to create a cost-efficient IT environment. In the event of an unexpected error, you can easily restore data from backed-up files on the cloud. You can back up files from local folders to local, remote, or other storage spaces in only four easy steps. Select a source location, assign a backup destination, set a schedule, and click "Apply". The whole process can be finished in one window without any complicated settings. While Hybrid Backup Sync performs backup/sync from a QNAP NAS to another NAS/server or the cloud, you should use Qsync - our critically-acclaimed Dropbox-like file sync app - to sync files between a QNAP NAS and user devices (such as desktops, laptops, and mobiles).
