LA-EA1 Adapter Review - SAL50F18 for Sony NEX 5N SUMMARY: If you plan to use AF very often, the LA-EA1 is very slow, and doesn't make it very practical. Otherwise, its a suitable option for still shots, landscape photography, and MF. I apologize for the poor video quality, just wanted to do a quick review of the LA-EA1 since there was no informative videos and I was planning to return the items. With a firmware update to the NEX-5N and LA-EA1, you have the flexibility of using the autofocus feature with Sony Alpha lenses. Unfortunately, the AF is VERY slow and not practical for anything other than landscape and still photography. The LA-EA2 with translucent mirror technology supposedly improves this but at twice the cost (~ $400).

These are the first footage i shot with my Sony Nex fs100. Using the Alpha Sony LA-EA1 adapter. Lenses: Sony 70-400mm f/4-5.6 SSM G & Sony 16-80mm f/, some shots were taken with the Sony extender. The footage has been color corrected, With the Sony LA-EA1 adapter, white-balance and shutter speed can be set on automatic. Auto-focus will be possible with the Sony LA-EA2 adapter which i have now, unfortunately a firmware update is necessary which is not yet available!!!!! In this small film the Dutch dunes, european greenfinch, blackbird, fieldfare and the lapwing are shown.

Choosing between Sony's LA-EA1, LA-EA2, LA-EA3, or LA-EA4 adapter used to be an easy decision - the even numbered adapters always gave the best performance. Then Sony introduced E-mount cameras with native phase-detect AF, and so the nuanced decision became less cut-and-dried. Be sure to watch Part 2 at Here's the nuanced summary for those of you who don't want wade through a 13-minute video, enhanced by viewer "Lofote": 1. Screwdriver-driven lens? LA-EA 2 or 4. (If you don't need autofocus, then you can use LA-EA1 or 3.) 2. SSM / SAM lens and APS-C body: LA-EA1. The LA-EA1 isn't being made anymore, so you can substitute the LA-EA3 instead. 3. SSM / SAM lens and any full-frame body except A7R: LA-EA3 4. Camera that has “NEX” in name, the original A7, A6000, A5000, A3000, A3500, A7S, and A7S II: LA-EA2. Since the LA-EA2 isn't being made anymore, you can substitute the LA-EA4 instead. 5. I've received a number of requests for a video highlighting my collection of vintage Minolta lenses. As you may know, the Minolta Maxxum mount is the same as the Sony A mount, meaning all of these lenses can be used on any camera body which supports either of those mounts. However, these Minolta lenses can also be used on your Sony E Mount camera with the use of an adapter such as the LA-EA4. I included a number of sample images in the video and I'm sure you'll agree that these lenses are a great bargain and produce fantastic images for those of you on a budget or if you just want to use some of these awesome vintage lenses. This is a continuation of Gary Friedman's video explaining the nuanced behavior of the LA-EAx adapters for Sony's E-mount cameras. (The original video appears here: ) This video explores "Yes, but how do the odd-numbered adapters (LA-EA1 and LA-EA3) behave when you're shooting video?" The answer is "it depends on your camera body - it will either focusing using really bad CD-AF or not at all." On the plus side, when taking stills, all the great features such as subject tracking and Eye AF work just as well as if a native E-mount lens were used. This video references an earlier video showing just how difficult it is for a camera to focus with the f/stop closed down (a theoretical problem that Sony has since overcome). Проверка работы автофокуса с камерой А6100 и объектива sal55200 через переходник la-ea1 на прошивке . Есть проблемы с фокусировкой с монотонным объектом в кадре по всему полю. Ощущения работы АФ контрастного без фазового. Фокусировка по глазам работает, в ролик добавлять не стал. Чуда не ожидал, но для неспешной съёмки с возможностью аф подойдёт. Между столбом и задним планом 5-8 м.

This video compares the Sony LA-EA5 A-mount to E-mount adapter with the 3rd party modified LA-EA4 called the LA-EA4r or "Monster Adapter". Which one is better? More info, including where to buy the circuit board, can be found below. IMPORTANT NOTE: I forgot to mention one of the caveats of the Monster adapter: It doesn't handle SSM or SAM lenses, whereas the LA-EA5 does (if you have the right body). Life is full of tough choices, isn't it? The Monster adapter was originally mentioned in my blog post from 2020: Here's a video showing my first attempt at doing the upgrade: (No audio on this.) Here's a video showing the early prototype vs. the A99 II: Here's a better test of the 500mm f/8 in good light using pre-production firmware: This video has 3 tests; the first showing off Eye AF, the 2nd showing the lens on an A99 II for reference, and the 3rd showing a similar test on an A7R IV. More early tests of Human and Animal Eye AF using pre-production firmware (the product is much more stable now): Earlier videos explaining the differences between the LA-EA1 through LA-EA4: And part 2: I will NOT be taking on the role of distributor, nor will I be offering the upgrade surgery service, however you can purchase the circuit board here: Frequently Asked Questions Q: Will this adapter make my lenses focus faster than the LA-EA4? A: Probably not.. The goal is to add new intelligent focusing modes that you can’t get with the LA-EA4. Do not expect increased speed to be the primary benefit. Q: Will I be able to use SSM and SAM lenses on it? A: No. It could be added later, though. I tried to convince the team that it should be added now since people will only need to have one adapter. Instead they decided to prioritize adding more lenses to the ‘supported’ list. Q: I have a very popular 3rd party lens. Will it work on this adapter? A: No. Q: Will it work with video? A: No. The designers are adamant that the focusing would not be smooth and this would call attention to itself in videos, and so it is intentionally not supported. Plus motor noise would be picked up by the camera’s built-in mics if you don’t use an external mic. Q: Will it AF closed like native E-mount lenses? A: No; it will meter and focus wide open just like all A-mount lenses. Q: What if I attach a lens not on the ‘currently supported’ list? A: It will be Manual Focus only. Q: How are firmware updates done? A: The same way you do for a lens or a normal adapter. Attach the adapter to a camera body, connect the camera to a computer via USB, and run some software. Q: Will Xi lenses be supported? A: Those lenses were not known for their optical excellence. And not many people have expressed interest. So currently it’s not on the ‘to be supported one day’ list. Q: Will it work with the A7S II? A: No – the camera it’s connected to has to have phase-detect AF points baked into the sensor. Neither the A7S II nor the original A7s have this – they are contrast-detect AF only. Q: Will it work in conjunction with a matched teleconverter? A: That’s much harder to do in software; so while it won’t be initially supported that’s something that can be added down the line. Q: Will the board swap also work with the LA-EA2? A: No. The board shape and connector pinout are similar but different. If you try to install this board on an LA-EA2, it might burn the adapter. Q: How about other Zeiss AF lenses? A: Only two have the screw-driven AF. Both are supported. Q: Is all the normal LA-EA information retained in EXIF metadata? A: Yes. In all of my images taken with the adapter, the EXIF information shows the lens’s focal length and max. aperture. Q: Will you be able to easily reinstall or remove the AF mirror in case you wanted to use other lenses not on the list - in current LA-EA4 mode? A: You can restore the mirror if you want to, but if you want to go back to the old functionality, you’ll have to restore the original circuit board. Q: Where can I find a list of currently supported lenses?
