Supermicro CSE813M chassis with X10SLM-F X10SLM+-F X10SLM+-LN4F motherboard. Thank you for stopping by. In our video, we are going to provide a general overview of the Supermicro X10SLM family of motherboards. In particular, we will focus on memory and processor compatibilities, options and recommendations. We will also load and install a set of memory to show some tips and tricks for proper configuration. Sit back, relax and enjoy the video! To begin with, the CSE-813M Chassis can support a number of different boards. It is always best to identify the motherboard inside to ensure parts you are buying fro upgrades are in fact compatible. The X10SLM family includes 3 motherboards: X10SLM-F X10SLM+-F X10SLM+-LN4F. From a CPU and memory point of view, they are all the exact same. There are of course differences in other aspects of the board, specifically connection options. But as far as memory and processors, they all use the same product. OK. Now that we know they are all the same, I will reference as X10SLM family moving forward. As discussed, the chassis CSE813M can support several different boards, and we find the X10SLM family of motherboards to be one of the most commonly used. Let's talk memory. X10SLM accepts DDR3 memory. There are four DIMM slots. Speed options include: 1066, 1333, 1600 or 1866MT/s. Please do note, 1866 will clock down to 1600. 1866 woll work, but not at its full speed capacity. There are several different options regarding sizes: 1GB, 2GB, 4GB and 8GB. We often get asked - Do 16GB DIMMs work inside the Supermicro X10SLM? Unfortunately, 16GB memory modules are not compatible for this server. 8GBs are in fact the highest DIMM size possible. With the X10SLM family of motherboards, there is only 1 type of memory supported and that's ECC Unbuffered, which is also known as a Server UDIMM. Unfortunately, ECC Registered (RDIMMs) and Load Reduced (LRDIMMs) are NOT compatible or supported by the Supermicro X10SLM motherboard. This is one key point. Make sure you buy ECC Unbuffered. The max configuration for Supermicro X10SLM is 32GB via (4 x 8GB) 1600MT/s ECC Unbuffered Server Memory. Let's chat processors. The Supermicro X10SLM has 1 CPU socket which is an LGA150 socket. You can choose between several different types of processors. What we find to be the most common is the Intel Xeon E3-1200 v3/v4 series. We see a lot of E3-1240v3 and E3-1270v3. When asked, this is what our team recommends. You can also utilize Intel 4th and 5th Gen Core i3 / i5 / i7 series processors. There are indeed a lot of options for such a small 1U. The Supermicro X10SLM is a very efficient server, which is highly recommended for low end applications. In my never ending quest to find the best deals on repurposed enterprise equipment. I came across this jewel being sold on eBay by seller "The Server Store". The simple evaluation is that the seller does a great job shipping the products and the product itself represents a penny on the dollar bargain compared to attempting to peace meal something like this server together. The seller also takes the worry out flashing the raid controller card into IT mode for you. I also show a higher speed registered memory kit for this motherboard but failed to mention that seller. They are MET Servers out of Dallas, who I have bought from in the past and I think are a great resource for components. Notable issues with the seller was, the listing showed processor speed of . and I assume the CPU's had to have been the V2 version but they were not. The server was also shipped without any power cables. Not a deal breaker but inconvenient. One drive bays activity light was unresponsive which was really NBD considering all that was in good order. The Server Store sells a wide variety of used enterprise hardware and depending on what your willing to spend have product just a year or two old. This is not a paid endorsement of eBay or The Server Store and the product demonstrated was paid for by me. The server is to be used as a simple file server and a platform for a Win VM replacing a aging PC that can't be upgraded. A follow up video will highlight the software install and add-ons I use to achieve best performance for the use.

Video review a server we have built for a customer based on the Supermicro SuperChassis 216BA Server Chassis, with 24x front mounted 2.5" SAS/SATA Hot-Swap Bays. We built this server for a customer for use as a high performance and capacity storage server for use in a custom Linux ZFS based SAN. The system was built with a Supermicro X9SRL-F Socket 2011 E5-1600/2600 Motherboard, E5-2620 V2 (Ivy Bridge) 6-Core (Hex) CPU, 32GB RAM (ECC Registered), 16x Seagate Constellation 2 1TB 2.5" (7200RPM) Hard Drives, 2x Kingston SSDNow V300 60GB SSD's and 2x Crucial M500 240GB SSD's. The Seagate Hard Drives and Crucial SSD's were front mounted, while the 2x smaller Kingston SSD's were mounted at the rear on the optional 2x 2.5" SATA/SAS hot-swap module. These two drives were used for the OS in a RAID 1 mirror.

You can get an extremely powerful rackmount server for dirt cheap off eBay. A 40 core 80 thread machine will cost you about $500 USD. Though this sounds like an incredible deal, most people will still shy away from these bargain behemoths and instead build something with a fraction of the power for the same price. I think one of the main reason mainstream consumers tend to stay away from enterprise servers mainly has to do with their form factor. I started off with a 1U rack mount server chassis, a Intel D2500CCE Atom Dual LAN Mini-ITX Motherboard, 2 sticks of Samsung 2GB PC-8500 DDR3 1066MHz memory, & a ADATA 32 GB SSD. I tossed it all up in the air and it came back down as a firewall. The first power supply I got was junk, it burned out after about a week of use, and I had to replace it. I been Using it now for the past month, I really enjoy using PFSense, and will never be going back to stock routers ever again.
