Supermicro X8DTE, X8DTE-F, X8DT6, X8DT6-F Motherboards - In this video, we will review the X8DTE & X8DT6 family of motherboards inside the Supermicro CSE-823 chassis. We will go over how to properly install the DIMMs with some friendly best practice tips and tricks. We will dive into the various types of supported memory, different speeds & sizes and the max configuration possible. Also in this video, we will discuss which Intel processors are compatible, as well as the CPUs we recommend for low end and high end applications. Sit back and enjoy this tutorial / instructional video for the Supermicro X8DTE, X8DTE-F, X8DT6, X8DT6-F Motherboards. All four of these boards - X8DTE, X8DTE-F, X8DT6, X8DT6-F - accept the exact same memory and CPUs. From this point forward, we will refer to them as the X8DTE or X8DT6 family of boards. Let's begin with the memory. The Supermicro X8DTE motherboard has 12 DIMM slots running on DDR3 memory. There are several different speeds supported: 1066MT/s, 1333MTs and 1600MT/s. Do note 1600 will clock down to 1333MT/s which is in fact the fastest speed for the Supermicro X8DTE & X8DT6 family of boards. You have a number of choices regarding DIMM sizes including 2GB, 4GB, 8GB and 16GB. Unfortunately, 32GB and 64GB DIMMs are not supported. 16GB modules are the highest size. There is one type of RAM accepted and that is ECC Registered. Load reduced memory is not compatible. the max configuration for the Supermicro X8DTE motherboard is 192GB via 12 x 16GB DDR3 1333MT/s PC3-10600R ECC registered server memory. Regarding the processors, there are two CPU sockets, which are LGA1366. Intel Xeon 5500 or 5600 series processors are supported. We recommend E5620 for low end applications and X5650, X5660, X5670 for higher end applications. There are 6 DIMMs per CPU. Each CPU supports 3 memory channels. Each channel supports two DIMM slots. This is a bit of an impromptu video. I was testing out a motherboard for an upcoming project and remembered that I've been wanting to share some tips for those of you building your own server in a Supermicro chassis. Many of the Supermicro server chassis (Specifically the 825, 826, 216, 836, and 846) are built to E-ATX standards and can be used to install E-ATX, ATX, MicroATX, and MiniITX motherboards from other brands. However, the front panel I/O cable in those chassis are a bit unusual and different. We will dive into the different types of memory, DIMM sizes and speeds. We will touch on max memory installation capabilities. We will even physically install and configure the DIMMs and showcases some best practice tips and tricks along the way. On top of diving into the memory, we will review the compatible processors, and which CPUs we recommend for either low end or high end applications. The Supermicro X10DRH-C family of motherboards are E-ATX boards. These boards can be utilized in multiple chassis types such as rackmounts or towers. In this video, we are using the CSE-815, which is a 1U 4 Bay LFF chassis. Hope you enjoy Cloud Ninjas Supermicro server memory tutorial video on the X10DRH-C family of motherboards. Let's begin with the compatible memory options. Regardless of which type of motherboard - X10DRH-C, X10DRH-CT & X10DRH-CLN4 all utilize the exact same memory and Intel processors. From this point forward, I will refer to X10DRH-C family of motherboards, but please keep in mind all the same information pertains to X10DRH-CT & X10DRH-CLN4 as well. There are 16 DIMM slots operating on DDR4 memory. Several different speeds options are supported: 2133MT/s, 2400MT/s or 2666MT/s. Note 2666 will clock down to 2400MT/s speed. Memory DIMM capacity sizes supported include: 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, 32GB, 64GB or 128GB. There are two types of compatible memory: ECC Registered (RDIMM) and ECC Load Reduced (LRDIMM) server memory. We recommend ECC Registered server memory for lower DIMM sizes such as 4GB, 8GB or 16GB and we recommend Load Reduced server memory for higher DIMM sizes such as 32GB, 64GB or 128GB. Desktop memory is not supported. The max configuration for Supermicro X10DRH-C motherboard with ECC Registered is 1TB via 16 x 64GB DDR4 2400MT/s ECC Registered server memory. Whereas, Load Reduced Server memory will have twice the capacity! You can get 2TB on your Supermicro X10DRH-C with 16 x 128GB DDR4 2400MT/s ECC Load Reduced server memory. Now let's discuss the processors. There are two CPU sockets, which are an LGA2011-3 sockets. These boards are exclusively running on Intel processors and AMD does not have a compatible processor for this specific board. You can use a couple different types of Intel processor series with the Supermicro X10DRH-C family of motherboards. Intel Xeon E5-2600 V3 or V4 series. Cloud Ninjas recommends E5-2620v3, E5-2680v4 and E5-2690v4. There are a number of great options, we recommend using V4's. The X10DRH-C motherboard is a great option for a homelab server, virtualization environment or even a gaming server. You can use a couple different types of Intel processor series with the Supermicro X11DPH-T family of motherboards. Intel Xeon Scalable series 1st and 2nd Generation processors. This means silver, gold and platinum processors are accepted. There are a number of great options for CPUs. Supermicro X9DRT-HIBFF & X9DRT-HIBQF Motherboard - Learn more about these SMC motherboards as we provide a general overview and specifically review the memory and CPU options. Inside the CSE-217, the X9DRT-HIBFF and X9DRT-HIBQF are exactly the same when it comes to RAM and processors. There are four server blades per chassis. We will go through the various types of memory, different speeds & sizes, and the max configuration. We will even demonstrate best practices for installing and configuring the RAM with some helpful tips and tricks along the way. Intel processors will also be in this video. We will discuss the different compatible CPUs, and which processors we recommend for both low end and high end applications. It is worth noting, these motherboards are proprietary and cannot be utilizes in just any random chassis. They were designed for the CSE-217 chassis. Sit back, relax and enjoy this Supermicro memory tutorial video on the X9DRT-HIBFF & X9DRT-HIBQF motherboards. Let's begin with the memory. Both types of boards, X9DRT-HIBFF & X9DRT-HIBQF utilize the same exact RAM. So from this point forward, I will refer to X9DRT-HIBFF as the motherboard, but all the same information pertains to the X9DRT-HIBQF. There are 8 DIMM slots running on DDR3 memory modules. There are several options for speed: 1066MT/s, 1333MT/s, 1600MT/s or 1866MT/s. Module DIMM capacity sizes include: 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, 32GB or 64GB. There are 3 types of compatible memory: ECC Registered (RDIMM), ECC Load Reduced (LRDIMM), and ECC Unbuffered (Server UDIMM). We view ECC Unbuffered as wasteful spending so we recommend ECC Reg for lower sized DIMMs such as 2GB, 4GB, 8GB or 16GB and Load Reduced for higher sized modules such as 32GB or 64GB. The max configuration for Supermicro X9DRT-F motherboards with ECC Registered is 256GB via 8 x 32GB DDR3 1600MT/s ECC Registered server memory. However, LRDIMMs have twice the capacity! You can get 512GB on your Supermicro X9DRT-HIBFF with 8 x 64GB DDR3 1600MT/s ECC Load Reduced server memory. Regarding the processors inside Supermicro's X9DRT-HIBFF motherboard, there are two CPU sockets, which are an LGA2011 socket. You can use a couple different types of Intel processor series with the Supermicro X9DRT-HIBFF family of motherboards. Intel Xeon E5-2600 V1 or V2 series. Cloud Ninjas recommends E5-2660v2, E5-2670v2 and E5-2690v2. There are a number of great options, we recommend using V2's since they are relatively inexpensive nowadays. In this video, I replace my Supermicro 846 chassis' passive CPU heatsinks with active CPU heatsinks I purchased from Supermicro. I replace the CPU fans with Noctua fans to reduce the noise created by adding more fans. After installing low-noise fans in the chassis a few weeks ago, I found that the CPU's had been running hot. When maxed out, they would reach 70° C, which is the maximum threshold for overheating. I decided the best way to handle this would be to install active heatsinks and fans to keep them cool. After installing the new heatsinks and fans, the CPUs do not exceed 60° C during full load. Supermicro X8DTT & X8DTT-F motherboards – In our video, we will review the Supermicro X8DTT family of motherboards inside the CSE-827 chassis. In particular, we will focus on the memory and processors and the upgrades Cloud Ninjas recommends. The X8DTT family of motherboards encompasses several different boards. However, the memory and CPUs are the same for all of them. The main differences will be the connectors in the back or whether the board support IMPI or not. But the RAM and procs will all be the same. We will provide an overview of the different types, sizes and speeds of memory supported by Supermicro X8DTT. Regarding the memory, there are 12 DIMM slots operating on DDR3 based memory. There are 6 DIMMs per CPU. There are 3 memory channels per CPU which means there are 2 DIMMs per memory channel. Speeds supported include 1066MT/s, 1333MT/s and 1600MT/s. Please do note that 1600 will clock down to 1333MT/s. Yes 1333 is the fastest speed possible for the Supermicro X8DTT family of boards. Sizes supported include 1GB, 2GB, 4GB, 8GB or 16GB DDR3 memory modules. There are 2 types of memory supported: ECC Registered (RDIMMs) and ECC Unbuffered (server UDIMMs). We recommend ECC Registered for higher scalability and less expensive on a per GB basis. The max memory configuration for Supermicro X8DTT is 192GB via 12 x 16GB DDR3 1333MT/s ECC Registered Server Memory. Upgrade your X8DTT to the highest configuration today. In this video, I'm going to show you the 3 types of Supermicro SAS backplanes available in Supermicro servers. First, there are the "TQ" backplanes, which are direct attached but have individual connectors for each port. These are typically the cheapest type of backplanes, but they require a lot of cabling and SAS lanes from the controllers. Second are the "A" backplanes. These are similar to the "TQ" backplanes, but use consolidated SAS ports like SFF-8087 instead of individual SATA ports. This helps to reduce the amount of cabling, but you still need a SAS lane from the controller for each individual port. Finally, there are the "EL" backplanes which are SAS expander backplanes. These backplanes have a built-in SAS expander onboard and help to reduce the amount of connectivity required, and simplifies the number of SAS lanes needed from the controller. However, SAS expander backplanes are usually the most expensive. Additionally, there are SAS expander backplanes with dual SAS expander chips, e.g., the BPN-SAS2-826EL2. The dual SAS expander backplanes can provide redundancy as well as higher I/O bandwidth with SAS drives by load balancing the I/O traffic across both data channels.
