We will specifically focus on Memory and Processors. We will discuss the different types of memory, DIMM sizes and RAM speeds. We will go over the max memory installation configuration. We will even do a quick install and configure the DIMMs for those wanting to upgrade. We will also go over some best practice tips and tricks for your memory install. Before the memory install, we will review the compatible Intel CPUs, and which processors we recommend for either low end or high end applications. The Supermicro X10SRL-F & X10SRi-F motherboards are ATX boards. These boards can be utilized in a ton of different chassis styles including rackmounts and towers. We will start with memory. That is the heart of this video. Both Supermicro X10SRL-F & X10SRi-F motherboards accept the exact same memory and have same specs. All the details we discuss, will be good for both X10SRL-F & X10SRi-F mobos. These boards utilize DDR4 memory. There are 8 DIMM slots. You have several options regarding speeds: 2133MT/s, 2400MT/s or 2666MT/s. Please note 2666 will clock down to the true fastest speed which is 2400MT/s. Size options include: 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, 32GB, 64GB or even 128GB. There are 2 types of memory supported by Supermicro's X10SRL-F & X10SRi-F: ECC Registered (RDIMM) and Load Reduced (LRDIMM). Max configuration with RDIMMs is 512GB via (8 x 64GB) DDR4 PC4 2400MT/s ECC Registered server memory. Whereas, LRDIMM have double the capacity with 1TB (8 x 128GB) DDR4 2400MT/s ECC Load Reduced server memory. Both types of RAM are good options. We recommend LRDIMMs for high end applications and RDIMMs for low end applications.
Let's chat about the processors. There is only 1 CPU inside. This is an LGA2011-3 socket, which means the Supermicro X10SRL-F & X10SRi-F motherboards accept Intel Xeon E5-1600 V3 or V4 as well as E5-2600 V3 or V4 processors. We recommend Intel E5-2620v3 for low end applications. Cheap and affordable but you still get 6 cores. For higher end applications, we like E5-2680v4 or E5-2690v4. In general, there are a lot of good options. AMD is not supported by X10SRL-F & X10SRi-F boards. Intel is the only supported manufacturer. The X10SRL-F motherboard is an excellent choice for a homelab server, virtualization environment or a gaming server.

Supermicro X12DDW-A6 Motherboard - In this video, we will provide a general overview specifically focused on the memory and CPU options. Inside the CSE-LB13AC2-R860AW chassis, the X12DDW-A6 are proprietary motherboards and could not just go into different types of chassis. The chassis is a 1U 8 Bay SFF (2.5"). In this video, we will go through the various types of compatible memory, different speeds & sizes, and the max configuration for each type of memory. We will review best practices for safely installing and configuring your memory upgrade. We will provide some helpful tips and tricks along the way. Intel processors will also be featured. We will discuss the different compatible CPUs, and which processors we recommend for both low end and high end applications. Sit back, relax and enjoy this Supermicro memory tutorial video on the X12DDW-A6 motherboards.
Let's get started with the memory. There are 16 DIMM slots running on DDR4 memory architecture. You will have several options for memory speed: 2666MT/s, 2933MT/s or 3200MT/s. Memory DIMM capacity sizes include: 8GB, 16GB, 32GB, 64GB, 128GB, 256GB or 512GB. However, the 512GB DIMM is only for 1 type of RAM… which bring us to what type of RAM is compatible with my Supermicro X12DDW-A6. There are three types of compatible memory: ECC Registered (RDIMM), ECC Load Reduced (LRDIMM) and Intel Optane Memory. ECC Unbuffered (Server UDIMM) is not supported. We recommend ECC Reg for lower sized DIMMs such as 4GB, 8GB or 16GB. We recommend Load Reduced for higher sized modules such as 32GB, 64GB, 128GB or 256GB. The max configuration for Supermicro X12DDW-A6 motherboards with ECC Registered is 4TB via 16 x 256GB DDR4 3200MT/s ECC Registered server memory. Load Reduced memory offers the same exact scalability at 4TB via 16 x 256GB DDR4 3200MT/s LRDIMMs. Intel Optane memory will max out at 4TB via 8 x 512GB 2666MT/s persistent memory. You can only put in 1 Intel Optane Persistent 200 series per memory channel, which is why you can only install 8 and not 16 sticks. However, you can install 4TB of Intel Optane + 2TB of LRDIMM for an overall Max Configuration of 6TB of RAM!
Regarding the processor, there are two CPU sockets, which are an LGA4189 socket. You can use 1 type of Intel processor series with the Supermicro X12DDW-A6 family of motherboards. Intel Xeon Scalable 3rd Generation processors. This means silver, gold and platinum 3rd Gen processors are accepted. There are a number of great options for CPUs. The X12DDW-A6 is an excellent options for virtualization and running a corporate environment.

Let's get rolling! Yes. This video covers all 3 motherboards mentions above. Yes - the X9SCM, X9SCM-F and X9SCM-IIF. Technically there are slight differences to each board. However, we will be focusing on RAM and CPUs, which are the exact same across all the boards. Yes the RAM and CPUs utilized for these boards are all the same, which makes life easier from a stocking stand point. You can buy 1 type of 8GB module and this will cover all 3. The chassis CSE813M can technically have different boards inside. This one is focused on a very common motherboard, which is the X9SCM family of boards.
Let's talk memory. X9SCM family of boards will accept DDR3 memory. There are 4 memory slots. Sizes include: 1GB, 2GB, 4GB and 8GB. Unfortunately, there are no 16GBs for this server. 8GBs will be the highest DIMM capacity. Speeds include 1066, 1333, 1600 or 1866MT/s. Please do note, 1866 will clock down to 1600. With the X9SCM family, there is only 1 type of compatible RAM: ECC Unbuffered, also known as a Server UDIMM. Unfortunately, ECC Registered (RDIMMs) and Load Reduced (LRDIMMs) are NOT compatible with the Supermicro X9SCM. This is very important. You can only ECC Unbuffered. We hear that question a lot. People want to use RDIMMs inside their X9SCM but they will not work. The max configuration is 32GB (4 x 8GB) 1866MT/s ECC Unbuffered Server Memory for X9SCM.

You can use a couple different types of Intel processor series with the Supermicro X10DRH-C family of motherboards. Intel Xeon E5-2600 V3 or V4 series. Cloud Ninjas recommends E5-2620v3, E5-2680v4 and E5-2690v4. There are a number of great options, we recommend using V4's. The Supermicro X9SCA server is an excellent entry level server. This system would be very comparable to a Dell PowerEdge R210 ii server in that they use the same memory and processors. If looking for a solid, low cost dedicated server, then this could be the right choice for you. This video covers both motherboards: X9SCA and X9SCA-F. The "F" ending means the board supports IPMI. No "F" means no IPMI. However, we will be focusing on RAM and CPUs, which will be the exact same for both boards. Yes. Supermicro made the RAM and CPUs utilized for these boards all the same, which makes it easier from a stocking stand point. You can purchase one type of 8GB memory module and can upgrade a number of different boards. The chassis CSE813M can support many different ATX boards inside. This video is focused specifically on the X9SCA family of boards.
Let's talk memory. Supermicro X9SCA motherboards will accept DDR3 memory and they have four DIMM slots. Sizes options include: 1GB, 2GB, 4GB and 8GB. Installing non-Supermicro motherboard in Supermicro server chassis | Supermicro Tech Tip
This is a bit of an impromptu video. I was testing out a motherboard for an upcoming project and remembered that I've been wanting to share some tips for those of you building your own server in a Supermicro chassis. Many of the Supermicro server chassis (Specifically the 825, 826, 216, 836, and 846) are built to E-ATX standards and can be used to install E-ATX, ATX, MicroATX, and MiniITX motherboards from other brands. However, the front panel I/O cable in those chassis are a bit unusual and different. In this Supermicro tech tip video, I'll show you what you need to adapt the Supermicro chassis to work with non-Supermicro motherboards.

Supermicro CSE813M chassis with X10SLM-F X10SLM+-F X10SLM+-LN4F motherboard. Thank you for stopping by. In our video, we are going to provide a general overview of the Supermicro X10SLM family of motherboards. In particular, we will focus on memory and processor compatibilities, options and recommendations. We will also load and install a set of memory to show some tips and tricks for proper configuration. Sit back, relax and enjoy the video!
To begin with, the CSE-813M Chassis can support a number of different boards. It is always best to identify the motherboard inside to ensure parts you are buying fro upgrades are in fact compatible. The X10SLM family includes 3 motherboards: X10SLM-F X10SLM+-F X10SLM+-LN4F. From a CPU and memory point of view, they are all the exact same. There are of course differences in other aspects of the board, specifically connection options. But as far as memory and processors, they all use the same product. OK. Now that we know they are all the same, I will reference as X10SLM family moving forward. As discussed, the chassis CSE813M can support several different boards, and we find the X10SLM family of motherboards to be one of the most commonly used.
Let's talk memory. X10SLM accepts DDR3 memory. There are four DIMM slots. Speed options include: 1066, 1333, 1600 or 1866MT/s. Please do note, 1866 will clock down to 1600. 1866 woll work, but not at its full speed capacity. There are several different options regarding sizes: 1GB, 2GB, 4GB and 8GB. We often get asked - Do 16GB DIMMs work inside the Supermicro X10SLM? Unfortunately, 16GB memory modules are not compatible for this server. 8GBs are in fact the highest DIMM size possible. With the X10SLM family of motherboards, there is only 1 type of memory supported and that's ECC Unbuffered, which is also known as a Server UDIMM. Unfortunately, ECC Registered (RDIMMs) and Load Reduced (LRDIMMs) are NOT compatible or supported by the Supermicro X10SLM motherboard. This is one key point. Make sure you buy ECC Unbuffered. The max configuration for Supermicro X10SLM is 32GB via (4 x 8GB) 1600MT/s ECC Unbuffered Server Memory.
Let's chat processors. The Supermicro X10SLM has 1 CPU socket which is an LGA150 socket. You can choose between several different types of processors. What we find to be the most common is the Intel Xeon E3-1200 v3/v4 series. We see a lot of E3-1240v3 and E3-1270v3. When asked, this is what our team recommends. You can also utilize Intel 4th and 5th Gen Core i3 / i5 / i7 series processors. There are indeed a lot of options for such a small 1U. The Supermicro X10SLM is a very efficient server, which is highly recommended for low end applications.
