Dell PowerEdge R330 | In this video, we will explore all the memory upgrade options for the Dell PowerEdge R330 server. We will also demonstrate how to properly install & upgrade your DIMMs. We provide a general overview of the Dell R330 server as a whole. Part of Dell’s 13th generation, the PowerEdge R330 is an incredibly popular DDR4 based, single socket 1U server supporting Intel Xeon E3-1200 V5 or V6 series processors. You can also install Intel Core i3 6100 Series, Intel Pentium G4500 or G4600 series as well as Intel Celeron G3900 series processors. What Cloud Ninjas recommends and what we see as the most common CPU, is the E3-1200v5 series. Specifically E3-1220v5, E3-1240v5 or E3-1270v5. This is an LGA1151 socket. This is the next generation to the PowerEdge R320 server. The Dell PowerEdge R330 utilizes DDR4 memory and has four DIMM slots. There is only 1 type of memory you can install inside your R330 server, which is ECC Unbuffered (Server UDIMM). Unfortunately, ECC Registered (RDIMMs) and Load Reduced (LRDIMMs) are not compatible with Dell R330 servers. You can only utilize ECC Unbuffered memory, which is the only type of compatible module supported. You can use a number of different speeds and sizes for your PowerEdge R330. Speed options include 2133MHz, 2400MHz or 2666MHz. Please note 2666 will clock down to 2400, which is the true fastest speed. Size options include 2GB 4GB 8GB 16GB. Unfortunately 32GB DDR4 ECC Unbuffered modules are not supported by the Dell R330 server meaning the max configuration is 64GB via (4 x 16GB) DDR4 PC4-19200zt-R 2400MHz ECC Unbuffered Server Memory. There are 2 Memory Channels, which equates to the R330 having two DIMM slots per memory channel. Dell has labeled the memory channels and they are also color coded. The beginning of the memory channel is the white DIMM slot. Black is the second DIMM slot. This is an important detail for those who are only configuring there R330 with two modules. You would need to install the two DIMMs in the two white DIMM slots. This will help the overall performance of your Dell R330 server by providing an even load distribution. Otherwise one memory channel is overloaded and the other memory channel is not being used at all. Mom unboxes server on the dining room table and they tell us what they see and what they think about this Dell PowerEdge R330 server. Overall she likes it as I run some of our home automation and security from it. The server is a Dell PowerEdge R330 and was mis-listed on eBay a bit and turns out had 4 X the drives in it and double the RAM. It is a OEM re-badge of the Dell R330 but it takes regular Dell server firmware, lifecycle controller, and uefi mode updates right from . It's running a Intel Xeon E3-1220 V6 CPU. I purchased in 2020 with my own money for $400 off of eBay as an open box that turns out it was "damaged" stock from a truck roll over that the OEM told me it shouldn't even exist and that they can't warranty or support it as it was already written off as a loss. Dell on the other hand still shows I have a warranty until 2024 which I've yet to call and double verify but if that still holds I found the best deal around on a new server for my home lab. The R330 has two LGA1151 sockets, which means that the R330 accepts Intel Xeon E3-1200v5 or E3-1200v6 series processors. Intel Celeron G3900, Pentium G4500, Pentium G4600, and Core I3 6100 series processors are also supported. In the video specifically, we will focus on Intel Xeon E3-1200v5 and E3-1200 v6 processor. The Dell PowerEdge R330 supports three types of drives: Serial-Attached SCSI (SAS), Serial ATA (SATA) and Solid State Drives (SSD). SAS drives have speeds of 10K to 15K RPM. SATA drives operate at speeds of RPM. SSDs can run at speeds of 6GB/s or 12GB/s. The form factors of the drives you can use for the R330 depends on what chassis you have. The 4 Bay LFF accepts 3.5” drives and the 8 Bay SFF accepts 2.5” drives. For 2.5” SAS drives that maximum capacity per drive you can use is . For 2.5” SATA, the max you can use is 2TB. And for SSDs, the max you can use is . On the LFF, 3.5” side of things, you can achieve much greater capacities. Dell states that for LFF SAS drives, you can use capacities of 14TB. We have been able to put in 18TB drives. For SATA, Dell says that 16TB is that max. We’ve been able to use 18TB drives. Lastly for SSDs, the max is . If you have had higher drive capacities work with your R330, share your findings in the comments below. We are interested to hear what others have found. We will also show you how to install a new drive into your R330. Installing drives into your system is very easy since the drives are hot swap, meaning you can install a drive while the server is running. We will also go over how to test your drives with Dell Diagnostics and HD Sentinel. Dell Diagnostics will test more than just the drives, but we will utilize this test to make sure our drives are performing well. Dell will provide an amber light for predictive failure. This is very common on 15K SAS drives because their bearings wear out over time. HD Sentinel is great for checking the Health Scores and Power On Hours for drives. So the example in this video is of a Dell PowerEdge R730. When preparing Dell Servers for sale I like to make sure the idrac, BIOS, and diagnostics are up to date. I will also blow out dust and test all the ports. If you are just getting rid of a server I would clear BIOS settings, reset idrac to defaults, clear idrac logs, and clear raid controller settings. Obviously destroy or wipe drives as well.

With an E3-1200v5 CPU, the fastest speed that your modules will run at is 2133MT/s. A E3-1200v6 CPU supports a maximum memory speed of 2400MT/s. Module capacity options include: 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB. When installing 32GB modules, only two modules total will be recognized by the server. The R330 accepts only one type of RAM: ECC Unbuffered (ECC UDIMMs). The max configuration that can be achieved by the R330 is 64GB via 4 x 16GB or 2 x 32GB. Mass updates are done in the lifecycle controller, and updates multiple things at once. You will need an active Internet connection, a Laptop/Desktop, and a NIC installed in your R330. You will also need some Ethernet cables to connect the devices. You will want to connect your R330 to your network so it has Internet access. You can do this by connecting the R330's NIC to a switch or directly to the network. You will then set the server's IP address, so it can join the network. You can then access Dells Update downloads catalog via HTTPs in Lifecycle controller. Depending on the last time you updated your system, these updates can take hours. The speed and power of your system as well as the number of updates selected also plays a role in how long these updates will take. We run our servers overnight and sometimes come back in and the updates have not finished.... so yes, be patient and expect this to take a fair amount of time. In this video, we will show you the two common chassis options for the PowerEdge R330. There is a total of 3 options which are: 4 Bay LFF Cabled, 4 Bay LFF Hot-swap, and 8 Bay SFF Hot-swap. In this video specifically, we will be showcasing the 4 Bay LFF hot-swap and 8 Bay SFF hot-swap chassis. There are not very many differences between the different chassis aside from the differences in bay counts. The 4 Bay LFF cabled and hot-swap chassis accepts 3.5" drives while the 8 Bay SFF hot-swap accepts 2.5" drives. Each chassis style for the R330 has a total of 3 PCIe slots. One of the PCIe slots is dedicated for a RAID controller card. The other PCIe slots includes low-profile slot and a full-height slot. Another cool thing about both R330 chassis is the ability to install a rear drive kit in the back of the chassis. Внешне это всё та же небольшая «башенка» с характерными элементами фирменного дизайна Dell, больше похожая на обычный ПК. Внутри же — небольшая односокетная плата под Intel Xeon E начального уровня. В данном случае это серия Xeon E-2200, которая слегка задержалась с выходом на рынок, но как раз PowerEdge T40 первыми и получили эти процессоры. Dell PowerEdge R210 ii | In our video we will cover all things memory regarding the Dell PowerEdge R210 ii. We will also review the server as a whole and demonstrate how to properly install and configure your memory. Part of the 11th generation server line from Dell, the PowerEdge R210 ii is a popular 1U server supporting 1 x Intel E3-1200 V1 & V2 series CPUs. You could also use Intel Pentium G600 or G800 series processor as well as Intel Celeron G400 series CPU. However, we see E3-1200v2 series as the most common CPU, especially E3-1240v2 or E3-1270v2. (LGA1155 socket). This is the next generation to the R200 server. The R210 ii utilizes DDR3 memory modules and there are 4 DIMM Slots. You can configure your R210 ii server with only 1 type of RAM: ECC Unbuffered (Server UDIMM). Unfortunately, you cannot use ECC Registered (RDIMMs) or Load Reduced (LRDIMMs). Only ECC Unbuffered is supported. There are several speeds and sizes for the R210 ii. Speed options include 1066MHz, 1333MHz, 1600MHz or 1866MHz. Size options include 1GB 2GB 4GB or 8GB. Unfortunately 16GB DDR3 ECC Unbuffered modules were never invented so there are no 16GB DIMMs available for the Dell R210 ii meaning the max configuration is 32GB via (4 x 8GB) DDR3 PC3-14900E ECC Unbuffered 1866MHz Server Memory. There are 2 Memory Channels per CPU. That means the R210 ii has two DIMM slots per memory channel. The memory channels are labeled and color coded. The white slot is the beginning of each memory channel. If you were only using 2 DIMMs, then for proper configuration you would load the 2 DIMMs in the 2 white slots, which is the start of each memory channel. This will provide an even distribution and not overload one channel. We will discuss in more depth in our video as well as show you how to actually load the DIMMs inside your PowerEdge R210 ii server.
