It allows for monitoring and control of SNMP-enabled devices in remote networks. The SNMP architecture is based on the manager-agent format. The SNMP manager will collect information from your multiple SNMP agents deployed at remote sites. The agents' job is to gather remote site data and send it back to the master through the SNMP protocol. This exchange of information can be done via polling or via traps. CONFIGURATION SNMP sur Cisco PacketTracer. 1/ Configuring SNMP Version 2c ----------------------------------------------------- Configuring SNMP Version 2c on a Cisco router or switch requires only one configuration command: the snmp-server community global command. However, most SNMP configurations include a couple of optional settings, as well. The following configuration checklist identifies the common steps: Step 1. (Required) Configure the community string and access level (read-only or readwrite) with the snmp-server community string RO|RW global command. Step 2. (Optional) Document the location of the device using the snmp-server location text-describing-location global configuration command. Step 3. (Optional) Document the contact for the device using the snmp-server contact contact-name global configuration command. Step 4. (Optional) Restrict SNMP access to NMS hosts that are permitted by an access control list (ACL) by defining an ACL and referencing the ACL on the snmp-server community string acl-name-or-number global configuration command. * There are two types of community strings in SNMP Version 2c: Read-only (RO): Provides access to the MIB variables, but does not allow these variables to changed, only read. Because security is so weak in Version 2c, many organizations only,use SNMP in this read-only mode. Read-write (RW): Provides read and write access to all objects in the MIB. *** 2/ SNMPv3 (SNMP Version 3) SNMP Version 3 arrived with much celebration among network administrators. Finally, security arrived with the powerful network management protocol. The security features provided in SNMPv3 are as follows: ■ Message integrity: This helps ensure that a packet has not been tampered with in transit. ■ Authentication: This helps ensure that the packet came from a known and trusted source. ■ Encryption: This helps to ensure that information cannot be read if the data is captured in transit. This list defines what the SNMPv3 protocol can do as a whole, but devices can choose to implement only some of these features, based on the configuration. However, even the least secure SNMPv3 option improves security compared to SNMPv2c, with the managed device requiring a username to identify the user (the NMS).

SNMP is a standard protocol used to collect information about network devices such as configuration and performance. SNMPv2 is default for most devices in the market because it is very simple to use, does not require configuration and is easy to integrate into an NMS. The server sends a request and the SNMP agent replies. SNMP traps are also sent by the agent when an event occurs. This could be an issue if an intruder sends SNMP requests. Another issue is that SNMP is community based (like passwords)with only two communities (read-only vs. read-write) with default community strings public for read only. For this reason, the use of SNMPv3 is recommended as it encrypts communication and provides a better authentication mechanism and integrity verification. Speaker: Manuel Deschambault In last year's session, we covered what SNMP is, what it does, and how to activate, configure and extend it on the Mac. This year we will dive into a few deployment scenarios. From remote script execution (from the server), to extending the agent on the Macs, and also to setting rogue monitoring where it runs standalone on machines and calls home with issues. The rogue scenario is effective with roaming laptops and we will cover different methods to get the alerts in our system, i.e. remote server access or email encoding. We will also display a well garnished extended SNMP tree on a test Mac to give a good example of all the metrics we can expose to the tech team to facilitate and accelerate troubleshooting with pre-emptive alerts. We will show how to register a IANA PEN number for custom development of SNMP extensions. Institutions spend so much time preparing images or installation tools, with a little more work, all these deployed machines would return invaluable data to track their health and cut down support costs. In this video, CBT Nuggets trainer Jeremy Cioara gives a brief overview of SNMP version 1 and 2, then provides a tutorial on the configuration of SNMP version 3 on Cisco IOS devices. Learn how SNPv3 works with this MicroNugget from CBT Nuggets. SNMPv3 has been out for years and it’s super secure. But people are slow to pick it up because version 2 is just so easy, even though it lacks almost any security whatsoever. Plus, go out searching for documentation or guidance about v3 and it feels like it was written to be confusing. The history of SNMP helps explain why security was the last upgrade. SNMPv2 was really little more than a feature pack upgrade to SNMPv1, which itself was an incredible thing just for existing. People found SNMP exciting simply because there was finally an open standard to monitor devices. V2 lacked any authentication or encryption methods. It had a community value, but no other security built-in. V3 has taken a long time to get adopted because it’s a significant protocol change and it takes implementing change on a ton of different devices. But it brought with it the capability to do authentication and encryption.
