Help Choosing the Right Synology NAS for you Choosing between SHR and RAID on my Synology NAS with Hard Drive Media So many NAS servers to choose from. They all look remarkably similar and moreover, all seem to do basically the same thing – but some better than others. Yet for many people who are setting out to buy their first NAS from Synology, it can easily be met with confusion. Two devices such as the DS718+ or DS218, or the DS418PLAY and DS418 look near enough identical and feature specs that seem numerically very similar indeed. It was for reasons like this that Synology came up with a nicely defined classification system, that rivals even the guys at Western Digital with their colours system. Synology feature several series titles in their product name, with each representing the devices speciality and preferred use. That said, all the NAS from synology can perform many, many tasks of the others (Apple TIme machine Backup, Plex, Surveillance, VMs, etc) but it is the fact that it will perform much better at the task, or be suitable for users that are indicated by its title. They are below. What are the different types of Synology NAS? The model numbers really can get confusing, but once you have cracked the code, you will be able to instantly identify ANY Synology NAS in a single look. Here is the code: e.g. Synology DS918+ How it is comprised: Chassis Type – Number of Hard drives you can connect – Which Year/Series it is part of – Intended Use First is DS, RS or NVR. DS is DiskStation, which is a Desktop NAS. RS means RackStation, which is a Rackmount NAS. Finally there is NVR which means Network Video Recorder, which is a Surveillance specialised NAS with an HDMI out and keyboard/mouse support. So to summarize: DS = Diskstation, Desktop (e.g. DS918+, DS216j, DS418PLAY) RS = RackStation, Rackmount (e.g. RS217, RS815, RS3617xs) NVR = Network Video Recorder (e.g NVR216, NVR1218) DX = DiskStation Expansion, an expansion NAS for adding more HDD/SSD to supported Desktop synology NAS (e.g DX517 and DX1215) RX = RackStation Expansion, another expansion device but designed for Rackmount synology NAS devices (e.g. RX1215) VS = Visual Station, a serious of more compact Surveillance supporting devices (e.g. VS360HD and VS960HD) Find out what is new in NAS by visiting me on the Blog - htto:// Need Free NAS advice? Merits Of NMVe Cache With SSD Volume -M2D18 I am about to install a Synology FS1018 (purchased via your link to Amazon). It will have 24GB RAM. The FS1018 will host a RAID F1 SSD array (4x Samsung 860 PRO 240GB SSD drives) that holds about 100MB of performance-critical PHP apps and associated data caches – along with about 70TB of low-activity archived data on an attached DX1215 using 10TB IronWolf Pro HDDs. Would an M2D18 with NVMe SSD likely improve performance (given an SSD RAID and plenty of RAM for cache)??? I’m not looking for definitive proof or benchmarks; but hoping to benefit from your general knowledge and, perhaps,the experiences of your readers/customers. All SSD even in RAID0 will offer max 2000MB/s and relative IOPS. The NVME works at speed over 3000MB/s and much faster IOPS. It will definitely improve internal operations. The problem always is the weakest link in the chain. If you expect faster transfer speeds then no – you will be limited to 1Gbe or 10Gbe connection. Higher IOPS – definitely yes. If I am fast learning something as I spend another year in the network industry, I have long since learnt that was one though ‘impossible’ will all of a sudden be a doddle! In the network storage industry, Synology has always been a brand that is heavily praised for its software (DSM and all its applications) but in terms of hardware, they have always been a manufacturer that until about 2016/17, played it a little safe. Since 2017 however, we have seen them largely eliminate this school of thought with some impressive leaps in their hardware range (breaking ground on a number of technology standards too). They were the first brand to produce commercial NVMe cache equipped systems, have produced dual controller systems, desktop and rackmount flash-optimized platforms, a popular range of fully-featured mesh router systems and are even now developing a soon to be released 60-bay rack storage unit. In short, they have really upped their hardware game and the new E10M20-T1 upgrade card is a fantastic example of the brand approaching new technology, with that certain Synology swagger! This video will show you some alternative 10 GbE Network Interface Card (NIC) that is fully compatible with Synology NAS that has a PCI-E Expansion slots. Which includes the following: What brand cards to buy? What to look for? The model to choose and other considerations that lends flexibility in the long term, for instance, should get a 10 BaseT card that can take RJ-45 patch cable or card with SFP+ connector? Also remember that SFP+ modules cost money. So lot of considerations to make here. Also in what circumstances should you go with a genuine Synology Card. For this video I used Synology DS1618+ which is a previous generation NAS. The current equivalent drive bays on the market today is DS1621+ The network card that I used is Synology E10M20-T1 which does offer 1 - 10 Base T (Copper CAT 6 or above & RJ-45 connection) along with 2 slots for NVME SSD. The E10M20-T1 is a PCIe Expansion Card for Synology NAS and has both a 10GbE RJ45 network card AND two M.2 SSD slots for use as an SSD Cache. This card has been awaited by many because it finally allows for DiskStations with only a single expansion slot to have both 10GbE networking and an SSD Cache. With the DS923+ launch, Synology has FINALLY started supporting the creation of M.2 NVMe SSD pools. Prior to this release, the M.2 SSDs were only available to be used as cache. While we applaud the progress, this is very much a half-step forward by Synology. Currently, the DS923+ is the only DiskStation that supports M.2 SSD storage pools; however, we hope that Synology will continue down this road and start adding M.2 NVMe storage pool support for most of its future releases. Also, only Synology SSDs are supported, which cap out at 400GB. More info here -
