Dell PowerEdge R910 Server Memory "How To Guide" for proper RAM configuration and installation. In this video, we will provide a general overview on the R910 server and some best practices for correctly installing your memory modules. We will show a helpful review on all the different RAM options including speeds, sizes and type of memory supported. For starters, the Dell PowerEdge R910 has 64 DIMM slots. Yes you heard that right. 64 DIMMs slots in this beast. This is the next gen server following the R900 and the R910 is the 4U older brother to the R710. There are several options regarding size or capacity of the module including 2GB 4GB 8GB 16GB or 32GB DDR3 server memory. We get asked a lot if there are 64GB DIMMs for the R910... unfortunately there are no 64GB DDR3 memory supported by the R910. Your choices for speed include 1066MHz, 1333MHz or 1600MHz. The 1600MHz will clock down. There is only one option regarding type of memory. ECC Registered (RDIMMs). One question we tend to hear. Will Load Reduced Memory work with my Dell R910 server? Unfortunately, Load Reduced Memory (LRDIMMs) and ECC Unbuffered (Server UDIMMs) are not compatible with the Dell PowerEdge R910, so you can only utilize ECC Registered. There are 8 Memory Risers inside. Each riser has 8 DIMM slots, which gets you to the 64 DIMMs total. There are 4 Memory Channels per riser, which means 2 DIMM slots per memory channel. This is good news for quad rank modules as we can avoid the Rank Rule Issue. Max configuration is 2TB via (64 x 32GB) DDR3 1600MHz ECC Registered Server Memory. Dell just keeps doing it. Yet another high-performing 4U enterprise server. The Dell PowerEdge R910 has four LGA1567 processor sockets running on Intel 7500 or E7-4800 series CPUs. Each Intel processor controls 2 memory risers which equates to 16 DIMM slots. Dell PowerEdge T410 - In this video we will provide a general overview of the system and dig in deeper on the types of RAM supported as well as the max configuration. We will show some tips and tricks for installing the RAM and how to open and access the various components inside. Sit back, relax and enjoy! The Dell PowerEdge T410 is classed with Intel Xeon® technology and is designed for data centric environments. The T410 is upgradable up to six hard drives for scalable internal storage, which means that it can easily handle a multitude of file storage. The T410 boasts multi-core maximums within its Intel Xeon 5500 and 5600 processor series. The T410’s optimized Intel Turbo Boost technology allows the processor to automatically run each processor core beyond marked frequency. In the way of network connectivity, the T410 has five PCIe slots for PERC controllers, Audio, DDPE, 10G NIC, 1G NIC capabilities, iDRAC for remote management and trusted platform module (TPM) for added configuration data security. For maximum speed and bandwidth, the T410 can handle up to 256GB of memory. Speeds include 1066, 1333, 1600 or 1866 MT/s. Do note that 1600 and 1866 will clock down to 1333. The T410 has 8 DIMM slots in a dual processor configuration and accepts 1GB, 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, 16GB and 32GB memory modules. There are 2 types of memory for the Dell T410 which include DDR3 ECC Registered (RDIMMs) and ECC Unbuffered (server UDIMMs) memory modules. ECC Reg is what we recommend. You can max out at 256GB of ECC Reg at 256GB via 8 x 32GB 1600MHz ECC Registered Server Memory. However, with ECC Unbuffered, you can only top out at 32GB via 8 x 4GB. Hence, you can see why we recommend ECC Reg over ECC Unbuffered. Not only are they a lower cost per GB, ECC Reg also offers higher scalability. That's what I call a "winner winner chicken dinner." Added security features in the T410 include advanced reliability, availability, serviceability (RAS) management features for increased performance and decreased data loss in the event of crashes caused by system errors. The T410 is compatible with Microsoft Windows, Linux, and Citrix software which makes it the perfect server for any medium to large-scale business environment. The Dell PowerEdge R410 is a 1U server utilizing dual Intel Xeon 5500 or 5600 series processors with is an LGA1366 socket. The R410 is part of the Dell 11th Generation server family. Similar to its 2U brother the R510, there are 8 DIMM slots running on DDR3 memory. Sizes supported: 2GB 4GB 8GB 16GB or 32GB. Speeds supported: 1066MHz 1333MHz or 1600MHz. There are two types of RAM supported by the Dell R410: ECC Registered (RDIMM) and ECC Unbuffered (Server UDIMMs). However, we believe there is really only 1 choice (in our opinion). ECC Reg is far and away your best option. ECC Reg is cheaper than ECC Unbuffered. Plus you can have a much higher capacity with ECC Reg. Truly a win--win situation for RDIMMs. Unfortunately Load Reduced memory, also know as LRDIMMs, will not be accepted by the Dell R410. You can start to use LRDIMMs in the 12th generation from Dell, which would be the Dell R420 in this case. Max memory configuration is 256GB via (8 x 32GB) DDR3 PC3-12800R 1600MHz Server Memory. Unfortunately, 64GB DDR3 ECC Registered memory modules were never invented so 32GBs will in fact be the max for your Dell PowerEdge R410 server. The memory channels are unique with the R410 compared to most other servers. Most Dell & HP servers have 2 or 3 DIMM slots per memory channel. With the Dell PowerEdge R410, the memory channels are 1, 1, 2. This equates to 1 DIMM in the first channel. 1 DIMM in the second channel. And 2 DIMMs in the 3rd channel. This is a very strange architecture that we have only seen in the R410 and R510. The channels start with white tabs. You will see they are white white white black. In our video, we will discuss how to load the channels properly in more depth. The Dell PowerEdge R410 is a server model with great balance of redundancy, internal storage and performance. The 2-socket 1U enterprise rack server comes equipped with advanced systems management capabilities. This is an ideal platform for core business applications such as Microsoft Exchange or Microsoft SQL Server. Dell PowerEdge 2950 server memory guide for proper configuration and installation. The 2950 is a 2U server operating on dual Intel 5100, 5200, 5300 or 5400 series processors. Part of Dell’s 9th Generation, this server comes equipped with 8 DIMM slots utilizing DDR2 memory. This is the 2U older brother to the 1950 which supports the exact same memory and processors. There is only one type of memory for the Dell PowerEdge 2950 server. That option is Fully Buffered memory, also known as FBIMMs. ECC Registered (RDIMM) memory modules simply do NOT work with the Dell PowerEdge 2950 server. Do not purchase DIMMs for 2970 and think you can install in 2950. They just are not compatible and will not work. These are two separate styles of memory altogether. The max memory configuration for your Dell 2950 server depends on the generation of 2950 you have. You can locate your generation on the rackmount ear. There will be roman numerals. I = Gen 1. II = Gen 2. III = Gen 3. Max configuration for Gen 1 or Gen 2 is 32GB via (8 x 4GB) DDR2 PC2-5300F 667MHz ECC Fully Buffered Server Memory. However, the Gen 3 max configuration is 64GB via (8 x 8GB) DDR2 PC2-5300F 667MHz ECC Fully Buffered Server Memory. Since this machine is bit older, the best way to boost performance would be maxing out the RAM. For under $100 you can put in max RAM, so really this is a no brainer. Get the most out of your Dell 2950 server. The best method for installation with 2 CPUs would be 4 or 8 DIMMs. We will discuss in more depth in our video and also demonstrate for you how to actually load the memory modules inside your Dell PowerEdge 2950 server. In our video, you will find a good review on best practices for loading your memory modules and a helpful overview on all the different options including sizes, speeds and type of memory supported. Let's start by discussing the memory. The Dell PowerEdge T710 has 18 DIMM slots. The R710 and T710 are the exact same from a memory and CPU perspective, so if you are familiar with the R710 then you are in good shape. Size options include 2GB 4GB 8GB 16GB or 32GB DDR3 server memory. Yes 32GB RDIMMs do in fact work. Dell's spec sheet will only show up to 16GB, but that is not accurate. You can use 32GB modules. Speed options include 1066MHz, 1333MHz or 1600MHz. Note: 1600 will clock down to 1333MHz. There are two types of memory supported. ECC Registered (RDIMMs) and ECC Unbuffered (Server UDIMMs). The best option is very clear in our opinion. We always recommend ECC Registered over ECC Unbuffered. You will be able to scale to a higher capacity and the cost per GB is less expensive for ECC Reg over ECC Unbuffered. One question we hear a lot. Will Load Reduced (LRDIMM) Memory be supported by my Dell T710 server? Unfortunately, Load Reduced DIMMs are not accepted by the Dell PowerEdge T710 server. Max configuration is 384GB via (12 x 32GB) DDR3 1333MHz ECC Registered Server Memory. Which leads to another question we hear a lot. Why can't I put 18 x 32GB into my T710? Excellent question. We will solve this mystery in our video today! The Dell PowerEdge T710 has two LGA1366 processor sockets running on Intel 5500 or 5600 series CPUs. Options are dual core, quad core or hex core. Each Intel processor controls 9 DIMM slots. There are three Memory Channels per CPU which means three DIMMs per memory channel. That is very key. This means the T710 is subject to the rank rule preventing users from loading up 3 Quad Ranks DIMMs per memory channel. You can only put 2 Quad Ranks DIMMs per channel and all 32GB DDR3 ECC Reg are Quad Rank.. thus running into the rank rule issue. Dell PowerEdge R810 server memory upgrade tips and how to properly install modules and configure your system. In this video, we will provide a general "How To" guide and solve the mystery of what really is the max config for the PowerEdge R810. Part of the 11th Generation from Dell, the PowerEdge R810 is a 2U server with four processor sockets. This is it's most unique feature. The R810 is powered by Intel Xeon E7-4800 and E7-8800, or 6500 and 7500 series processors, which are LGA1567 sockets. Inside you will find 32 memory slots supporting DDR3 memory modules. You can utilize 1GB 2GB 4GB 8GB 16GB or up to 32GB Memory Modules. Please note. Only R810 Gen 2 (ii) servers will support 32GBs and you must use low voltage DIMMs paired with E7 processors. Speed options are 1066MHz or 1333MHz. This system is known to clock down to 1066MHz. There is only 1 type of RAM supported by Dell's R810: ECC Registered, also known as RDIMM. Load Reduced, also known as LRDIMM, is not supported by the R810. ECC Unbuffered DIMMs are also not supported. Only RDIMMs. The total maximum configuration will top out a 1TB of RAM via (32 x 32GB) DDR3 PC3L-10600R 1333MHz ECC Reg Server Memory. Please keep in mind you must have a Dell PowerEdge R810 Gen 2 servers for 32GBs modules to work. This is a common issue. If you do have the R810 Gen 1, then you can max out at 512GB via 32 x 16GB. We hear a lot of important questions regarding the R810 so we thought it would be helpful to share some answers to common questions and concerns. How can I tell if my Dell PowerEdge R810 is Gen 1 or Gen 2? This is a great question. You can find this information on your Service Tag. Pull out the service tag. If you see what looks like two roman numeral... something like this... II .... then you have the Gen 2. If you do not see the " II " then you have the R810 gen 1. Why can't we use LRDIMMs with the Dell R810? Unfortunately the entire Dell 11th Generation of servers does not support load reduced modules, including the R810. Is the Rank Rule an issue with the R810? Luckily, it is not an issue. The R810 has 2 DIMMs per memory channel so quad rank DIMMs are supported and are not effected by the Rank Rule. Can we use 64GB DDR3 ECC Registered memory modules with the PowerEdge R810? Unfortunately, 64GB DDR3 ECC Reg was never invented and only LRDIMMs support 64GB DIMMs in DDR3 world. Here you will find a good review on best practices for loading your memory modules and a helpful overview on all the different options including sizes, speeds and type of memory supported. Let's get started! The Dell PowerEdge R710 has 18 DIMM slots. This is the next gen server following the 2950 and the R710 is the 2U older brother to the R610. Size options include 2GB 4GB 8GB 16GB or 32GB DDR3 server memory. Speed options include 1066MHz, 1333MHz or 1600MHz. There are only two choices regarding type of memory supported. ECC Registered (RDIMMs) or ECC Unbuffered (Server UDIMMs). The best option is very clear in our opinion. We always recommend ECC Registered over ECC Unbuffered. You will be able to scale to a higher capacity and the cost per GB is less expensive for ECC Reg over ECC Unbuffered. One question we hear a lot. Will Load Reduced (LRDIMM) Memory be supported by my Dell R710 server? Unfortunately, Load Reduced DIMMs are not accepted by the Dell PowerEdge R710 server. Max configuration is 384GB via (12 x 32GB) DDR3 1600MHz ECC Registered Server Memory. Which leads to another question we hear a lot. Why can't I put 18 x 32GB into my R710? Excellent question. We will solve this riddle in our video today! The Dell PowerEdge R710 has two LGA1366 processor sockets running on Intel 5500 or 5600 series CPUs. Options are dual core, quad core or hex core. Each Intel processor controls 9 DIMM slots. There are three Memory Channels per CPU which means three DIMMs per memory channel. That is very key. This means the R710 is subject to the rank rule preventing users from loading up 3 Quad Ranks DIMMs per memory channel. You can only put 2 Quad Ranks DIMMs per channel and all 32GB DDR3 ECC Reg are Quad Rank.. thus running into the rank rule issue. Dell does it again. Yet another high-performing 2U enterprise level server. Dell PowerEdge R620 Server Memory "How To Guide" for RAM installation and configuration. In this video, we will review best practices for loading memory modules inside your R620 server and provide a general overviews of all the different options including speeds, sizes and memory types accepted. The PowerEdge R620 is part of the Dell 12th Generation family of servers. This 1U server operates on dual Intel E5-2600 V1 or V2 series processors which is an LGA2011 CPU socket. The R620 server is the next gen to the popular Dell PowerEdge R610 server. There are 24 DIMM slots running on DDR3 memory modules. Speed options: 1066MHz 1333MHz 1600MHz or 1866MHz. Note 1866 will clock down to 1600 speed. Size options: 2GB 4GB 8GB 16GB 32GB or wait for ! You can use two types of memory for your Dell R620: ECC Registered also know as RDIMM or Load Reduced also know as LRDIMM. This is very key. If you are just starting with your R620 and you believe you will want to scale up in the future, then LRDIMMs will be the best option for scalability as we will discuss more below. The big difference between ECC Registered and Load Reduced is the maximum configuration for the Dell R620. ECC Reg will only max out at 512GB via (16 x 32GB) DDR3 PC3-12800R 1600MHz Server Memory. Whereas, LRDIMMs will provide triple the capacity. You heard that right. Triple capacity! You can max your R620 with via (24 x 64GB) DDR3 PC3-12800L 1600MHz Load Reduced Server Memory. Now this is very puzzling. Why can you use 24 x 64GB with LRDIMM and we can only use 16 x 32GB with RDIMM? Great question. This is known as the Rank Rule and we will solve this riddle in depth in the video. Another common question. Were 64GB DDR3 ECC Registered memory modules invented? Unfortunately, they do not exist. Only LRDIMMs support 64GB DDR3 DIMMs. This system is a dual CPU socket 1U rackmount server. Each CPU manages three Memory Channels. Each memory channel controls three DIMM slots. Note: This is very important. All 32GB DDR3 DIMMs are Quad Rank and this is the main reason the Rank Rule becomes an issue for the Dell PowerEdge R620 server. Dell has labeled & color coded the memory channels. White is the first DIMM slot in every channel. Followed by black and then green. The proper configuration for dual CPUs is in duplicates of eight, which will evenly spread the load across each channel. However, we are here to tell you "Yes you can configure your R510 with 256GBs of memory." The Dell PowerEdge R510 is a 2U server operated by 2 x Intel Xeon 5500 or 5600 series CPUs (LGA1366 socket). The R510 is a Dell 11th Generation server and is the next gen to the Dell PowerEdge 2950 server (even though 2950 is 9th Gen... 10th Gen Dell was kind of weak so we skip it) . There are 8 DIMM slots utilizing DDR3 memory architecture. Sizes: 2GB 4GB 8GB 16GB or 32GB. Speeds: 1066MHz 1333MHz or 1600MHz. You can configure your R510 server with two types of RAM: ECC Registered (RDIMM) and ECC Unbuffered (Server UDIMMs). However, there is really only 1 choice in our opinion. ECC Reg is hands down the best option. ECC Reg will be cheaper than ECC Unbuffered and you can have a much higher capacity. Win--win for RDIMMs. Unfortunately Load Reduced memory (LRDIMM) is not accepted by the Dell R510. You would need to look to the next generation if you want to use LRDIMM with the Dell R520. The top of the line memory configuration is 256GB via (8 x 32GB) DDR3 PC3-12800R 1600MHz Server Memory. Unfortunately, 64GB DDR3 ECC Registered memory modules do not exist so 32GBs will in fact be the max for your R510 server. The memory channels are a bit strange with the R510. Most servers have 2 or 3 DIMMs per channel. With the Dell R510, the memory channels are 1, 1, 2. Meaning 1 DIMM in first channel. 1 DIMM in second channel. And 2 DIMMs in 3rd channel. A very strange architecture. The channels start with whites so the tabs are white white white black. In our video, we will discuss the channels in more depth and show you how to load the DIMMs inside your PowerEdge R510 server. The Dell PowerEdge R510 is a server model with great balance of redundancy, internal storage and performance. Dell PowerEdge 1950 server memory guide for proper configuration and installation. The 1950 is a 1U server operating on dual Intel 5100, 5200, 5300 or 5400 series processors. Part of Dell’s 9th Generation, this server comes equipped with 8 DIMM slots utilizing DDR2 memory. This is the 1U younger brother to the 2950 which supports the same RAM and CPUs. You can only use one type of memory for the Dell PowerEdge 1950 server. The only option is Fully buffered, FBIMMs. ECC Registered (RDIMM) memory modules simply will NOT work with the Dell PowerEdge 1950 server. Do not purchase DIMMs for 2970 and think you can install in 1950. They just are not compatible and will not work. These are two separate styles of memory altogether. The max memory configuration for your Dell 1950 server depends on the generation of 1950 you have. You can locate your generation on the rackmount ear. There will be roman numerals. I = Gen 1. II = Gen 2. III = Gen 3. Max configuration for Gen 1 or Gen 2 is 32GB via (8 x 4GB) DDR2 PC2-5300F 667MHz ECC Fully Buffered Server Memory. However, the Gen 3 max configuration is 64GB via (8 x 8GB) DDR2 PC2-5300F 667MHz ECC Fully Buffered Server Memory. Since this machine is bit older, the best way to boost performance would be maxing out the RAM. For under $100 you can put in max RAM, so really this is a no brainer. Get the most out of your Dell 1950 server.
