First of all, I'm not a fan of zooms. The only exception on my lens set is the Canon 17-40mm, which is an affordable way to get a very wide angle, with good image quality and capable of covering a full-frame sensor. All my other lenses have a fixed focal length and manual focus. I simply get more pleasure from using and collecting them. However, on a large camera like the BMPCC 4K with a cage, top handle, external SSD and large Sony NP batteries, size is no longer a concern, so I started considering getting a good quality and affordable zoom that I could keep mounted most of the time. I knew I would lose the precise focusing control and the nice feeling of use, but I would get the versatility in return. The Sigma 18-35mm is the one most people seem to pick, but I'm not a fan of Sigma Art lenses, since they always seemed too clinical to me. The obvious choice, considering current prices and my personal taste, was the Nikkor AF-S DX 17-55mm f/2.8 G IF-ED, which is probably the only professional grade DX lens ever made by Nikon, used to cost around 1400-1500 euros when initially released and sells these days for a bargain. I have a Metabones XL on my Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K, which requires an image circle larger than APS-C ( vs crop), but I knew the lens would be able to cover most of the zoom range. As soon as I started looking online, I found one with a fungus in the center and a not so smooth zoom ring, for 150 euros. I made a silly offer of 100 euros and was able to get it. I had no way to guess how bad the fungus would affect the image quality, but I had several contaminated lenses in the past that produced wonderful results, so I took my chances. For that price, I could easily resell it with profit. After my initial tests, I found the lens to be amazing. I was afraid it would look too clinical or contrasty, but it renders beautifully and it can easily replace my set of prime lenses when I don't need a faster aperture (I never do during daylight) without compromises in image quality. In fact it is sharper than the 24mm f/2.0 AI-S and has better corner performance than the 28mm f/. It is almost as good as the Zeiss Classic 35mm f/1.4 (with less CA) and the Nikon 50mm f/1.4 AI-S at f/2.8, but beats the 50mm at small apertures. The bokeh is obviously more modern (similar to the one produced by the 28mm G), but contrast levels and saturation are very well controled and not that different from the older lenses. Distortion is also very well controled. I need to test it against sunlight to check the flares. Build quality is fantastic for a modern lens, made of metal and fully weather sealed. It is very large and heavy, but still slightly lighter than the Zeiss. I get no vigetting when I use it from 20mm on 4K DCI (full sensor on the BMPCC 4k) with the Metabones XL. If I set the Cinemascope aspect ratio (1:), as I did in this video, I can go as wide as 18-19mm. For curiousity, on my full-frame Nikon photo cameras, the Df and D700, I seem to be able to use it from 25mm, but I don't want a large zoom for that purpose and will always pick my small primes. The tests on this video were done very quickly this afternoon and I'm just sharing 3seconds of each clip, since there's not point in looking too long at the same scene. The first two scenes were shot handheld in slow-motion to make it more stable, in the third one I used a table to place the camera so, nothing scientific. Also, no pixel peeping, since the goal is just to share the general look using natural light. Although I could easily match all shots, I applied the same settings on all clips, without WB adjustments, to check tint and contrast differences bewteen lenses. The tint seems to be a bit o the green side, which I like. - There were some slight variations in the lighting conditions, as you can see bewteen some shots of the 3rd scene. - On some occasions I set the focus point incorrectly on the 17-55mm, since it was too bright outside and the ring gives less control. Those shots were marked with a *. Congratulations if you were able to read to this point. :-)

I have bought the Canon 17-55 2.8 IS lens after using the Nikon / Nikkor version for a while including a two week trip across Jordan and some extreme weather conditions over there. Actually I ordered the Canon lens during the trip as I discovered a few shortcomings of the Nikon one. Biggest one being the lack of image stabilisation and no electronic aperture control (a useful feature using on BMPCC6K as it saves the settings in metadata). Not only that - but the BMPCC6K's EF mount adapted to the Nikkor 17-55mm f/2.8 is not technically correct as the flange distance increases from what the lens was designed for and therefore introducing some technical flaws like increased amount of chromatic aberrations and not being able to focus to infinity (although the latter was not so much of an issue in real world). So what are they like compared? I would say Nikon is a tad sharper but not when it comes to extreme / near infinity focus (due to earlier mentioned issue relating the EF and Nikon F adaptation). Also Nikon has a slightly warmer to red/magenta colour cast and is a little bit brighter, meaning that either the Canon version is more like f/3.2 or Nikon is closer to f/2.5. I have also witnessed that in the depth of field being ever so slightly narrower on the Nikon lens. Also Nikon has a more "onion ringing" going on in its bokeh balls especially visible when shooting in dark and at closest focusing distance with bright lights in the background. And lastly Canon is producing when lit directly at the lens with a bright intense light a more pleasing flaring resulting in much less "spiking" (which is a very common issue in modern zoom lenses). That said Nikon has nicer sun stars due to its 9 bladed aperture. When it comes to build quality - both are great but Nikkor has a lot more metal, is heavier and feels a lot nicer to operate and is weather sealed (none of them come close to any of the cinema dedicated lenses or any of the Zeiss manual glass when it comes to manual focusing though). Personally I will keep the Canon 17-55mm f2.8 IS lens just because the optical differences between them are so minute and the lack of Image Stabilisation can mean that at 55mm I simply cannot have usable shots. Also saves me deploying the tripod for a less. Otherwise they are both so underrated and such sharp great zooms it boggles me why anyone keep buying the Sigma 18-35 for. I had it too and it's just not as versatile for a zoom lens which is the main reason why people even buy them. #sigma1835 #nikon1755 #nikon In this review I am discussing the benefits and drawbacks between the Sigma 18-35mm /1.8 and Nikon (Nikkor) 17-55mm f/2.8 with some side by side sample footage. In my opinion they are some of the best zoom lenses you can get for a crop sensor cameras especially for filmmaking for that price. I am using them on my Blackmagic cameras (this entire review was shot on the BMPCC6K). It's a real toss up to be honest. The Nikon 17-55 is a lot more versatile but the Sigma 18-35 is technically a little bit more advanced and more compatible with the Canon mount cameras. In reality they are both excellent and you can't go wrong with either one. It will come down to your personal use case scenario. For me - Sigma 18-35 wins (for now). Эк вас всех после того, как в ролике про восьмисотую серию Nikon Миша упомянул, что не всякий объектив способен выдать попиксельную резкость на жирных никоновских матрицах, зацепил вопрос про разрешение объектива. Причём сомневаться в своих стёклах стали даже те, кто ни на D800, ни на D810, ни на, прости Господи, D850 вообще-то не снимают. Видимо нужно было срочное оправдание либо недостаточному навыку, либо слетевшей юстировке, а тут такой подарок! Мол, “Вот почему мне резкости-то не хватает!
