With an aperture range from f/2.5 to f/22, the Double Glass II optic from Lensbaby is a new-and-improved version of one of the earliest and most popular optics in Lensbaby’s Optic Swap System, the original Double Glass optic. Compatible with all of Lensbaby’s current and legacy Optic Swap lens bodies, the Double Glass II improves on its predecessor by adding all-metal construction and a 12-blade manually adjustable internal aperture to its unique and versatile drop-in magnetic aperture system. Nine specialty drop-in magnetic aperture disks ship with the Double Glass II optic. A five pointed star, a heart and another seven of the nine artistically designed and shaped drop-in apertures, developed by visual artists in the Lensbaby community, modify the out of focus areas of the image to add texture. When images shot with these uniquely shaped drop-in apertures contain out of focus points of light those points of light are rendered in the shape of the aperture. Lensbaby’s Double Glass II optic is compatible with all Optic Swap macro accessories including Lensbaby’s 46mm Macro Filter Kit and Macro Converters. When shot at its brightest aperture setting of f/2.5, the Double Glass II creates a tiny sharp spot of focus with increasing blur away from that spot. This optic, combined with the shaped apertures makes possible images that are impossible to achieve with any other lens besides the original Double Glass optic.

Eventhough tiltshift is well known for giving landscapes a toyish or miniature effect the Lensbaby composer does not really do it, the lens or atleast the double glass optics is more of a spot focus as you focus on the sweet spot to have a subject you want to frame in focus while the rest is blurred. The effect is quite interesting and for certain photography and videography be quite useful, however you do need time to setup correctly and its not that easy and simple. Lensbaby produces some interesting and unique lenses. These lenses tend to have certain characteristics and features that help them stand out amongst most lenses on the market. Recently they asked me if I wanted to review their latest 35mm lens so we decided to do some street photography with it. I'm happy to say I'm pleasantly surprised by how this lens performs. I use a Lensbaby for some of my commercial work because i love the way I can channel a viewer's attention to a specific area of an image by using one. But what is a Lensbaby? A Lensbaby is a small manual lens which not only focuses front to back - it also has a sweet spot of focus which you can move around the image horizontally and vertically. You can even expand and contract the size of the sweet spot to get the look you want. In this vid I'm going to introduce you to the concept - and in part 2 we'll get out and begin shooting some images with one. The Lensbaby I use is the 'Composer' which has a simple locking ring so you can set up a shot and lock the sweet spot in place. At the time of writing this Lensbaby have just updated their range with a pro version of the composer and a non bending lens for fish-eye photography.
