Mark Dickinson Photography unboxes his new AF-S Nikkor 400mm f/ ED VR Autofocus Lens. About the lens (from ) The Nikon Telephoto AF-S Nikkor 400mm f/ ED VR Lens is the premium ultrafast telephoto lens for the Nikon autofocus system. It is a very robust and durable lens. Its lightweight construction incorporates a magnesium die-cast barrel, and professional-grade dust and moisture sealing allows it to be used in more rugged situations. This lens features the improved Vibration Reduction (VR II) system that allows handheld telephoto shooting, even in less-than-ideally lit conditions. The VR system minimizes image blur caused by camera shake, and offers the equivalent of shooting at a shutter speed of about 4 stops faster. In addition, this lens also features the Tripod Detection mode, which reduces vibration that may occur due to shutter release, when mounted on a tripod. The Silent Wave Motor (SWM) feature provides swift autofocus with superior accuracy and ultra-quiet operation. This G-type lens does not feature an aperture ring on the lens body, resulting in a lighter and more compact lens. Aperture changes are designed to be done via the camera's command dial. Note: VR function is only compatible with Nikon's F5, F100, N80, N65, D70, D100 & D1-series (or later generation) cameras. AF-S feature is not supported by certain older camera models. "G" type lenses are not fully compatible with the F4, N90-series, N70, N8008-series and N6006 (or older model) cameras; with these lenses only programmed auto or shutter-priority auto exposure mode can be used. Tripod Detection mode reduces vibration that may occur due to shutter release when mounted on a tripod. Magnesium die-cast lightweight barrel and professional-grade dust and moisture resistance. Improved M/A mode provides instant and fast switching from autofocus to manual focus with nearly no time lag, even during tracking autofocus. Three ED (Extra Low Dispersion) glass elements restrict chromatic aberrations to a minimum, while enhancing color, sharpness and contrast, even at the widest aperture settings. Exclusive Nano Crystal Coat and a meniscus protective glass element combine to further reduce ghosting and flare for even greater image clarity. 9-bladed aperture diaphragm assures brilliant rendition of out-of-focus highlights. I share my thoughts on the advantages and disadvantages of each of the lenses in my experience shooting them for bird and wildlife photography. When Nikon announced the new Z 400mm f/4.5 VR S lens, I realised that it sat quite ninecly in between the current lenses, and I started to wonder whether it could replace both, marking an end of f-mount lenses for me after 18 years. I got hold of one and set about testing it with my kit to see just how good it was... DISCLAIMER: As with any of my gear reivews, results are likely to vary a little between different copies of the same camera bodies and lenses, so remember your mileage may vary. Some of the tests relied on photography technique, and yours is probably better than mine. Also, some things like the quality of autofocus tracking, or what is an acceptably sharp image, will be highly subjective. My first attempt at capturing the 'classic' red squirrel mid-air jumping shot - the conditions were terrible and the learning curve was steep, but I think I got something good in the end! 🐾 Please subscribe to see more of my videos 👍 I've got loads of exciting nature photography trips and projects with the wildlife camera coming up 😊 I've wanted to get a photo of a red squirrel jumping for ages, so I booked myself into the suirrel photography hide at Argaty Red Kites () and headed there with my two fastest telephoto lenses, the Nikon 400mm f/ VR and Nikon 70-200mm f/ FL VR, and my Z6 camera. I knew I would have to take a lot of bursts of images to have any chance of achieving this tricky shot, but on the day, the rainy weather and low light turned out to be the biggest challenges! This video was recorded more than 9 months ago and it's taken me a really long time to edit it - sorry! Part of the reason for that is with the bad weather I wasn't sure the images were actually any good, and also I felt really rushed on the day, so I didn't get as much material as I should have for the vlog. In hindsight, I concentrated too hard on the jumping shot, when 'shooting to the conditions' and getting more lovely squirrel portraits etc would probably have been a better plan... That's why there's a Part 2 coming up later..! While not a gear review per se, in this video I talk a bit about my personal decision to upgrade and why I paid a difference of 7 grand to get the "same lens." I also explain a little about how I afford these lenses as a person that still works a "real" full-time job. I don't have any regrets on my purchase of the Z9 or Z 400mm but this is a lot of money to me and I don't take it lightly. As always I try to keep the content here real and practical. I have 2 Nikon D850 cameras, took over 60,000 photos with them. Made many trips to Africa and Canada with them, in temperatures ranging from -40 to +40 degrees Celcius, they fell, suffered shocks, caught dust, in short I did not really treat them well. The future change to mirrorless cameras is not going to be easy for me! But alas it is the future! What more can we say about the 400mm f2.8 and the 200mm f2 from Nikkor? except that it is certainly the 2 best lenses from Nikon for years!
