TECH TIP: HP OfficeJet Pro 7730 Printing Problem, Printhead Error: --- If you install a standard HP 952 or high yield HP 952XL ink cartridge into your #HP #OfficeJetPro 7730 #Printer & observe the "USE #SETUP #CARTRIDGES " #error message on the display, typically "SETUP" cartridges will be required to #reinitialize the printer and will not allow use of HP OEM regular or extra large tanks, 3rd party aftermarket or refilled HP original ink cartridges to function. The error may also be displayed if the #PRINTHEAD assembly is removed & replaced (i.e. #programming requirement). If the original 'SETUP' #cartridges are not available, it is possible bypass the lockout message by performing the following steps. NOTE 1: Procedures may vary depending on regional location and by printer model version / software revision. 1. Navigate to the SUPPORT MENU by pressing the Return button 4 times in a row (Note: the Return button will not be illuminated but is located at the bottom left of menu). 2. Under SUPPORT MENU, scroll down to the SYSTEM CONFIGURATION MENU. 3. At SYSTEM CONFIGURATION MENU, select OK. 4. At the TRADE OOBE MENU, select OK. 5. At the TRADE SUPPLIES DISABLED MENU, select OK. 6. HP #OEM regular, aftermarket or refilled ink cartridges may now be used in the printer. NOTE 2: In some cases, the SUPPORT MENU may not initially appear, you may need to first remove the ink cartridges, restart printer, then press the RETURN key four times. TECH TIP: HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 Printer Ink System Failure: --- For the #HP #OfficeJet Pro 7740 Printer (#HP7740), if you have installed a #HP952 cartridge (or HP 952XL) and you observe a #Printhead #Failure or #Printer #Failure then it is possible that the internal PRINTHEAD may have a bent or #damaged contact #pin or pins. When the #cartridge is installed the cartridge's smart chip makes direct contact with the #Internal #PRINTHEAD pins, and can sometimes bend (or break) the pins if the cartridge is accidentally or forcibly installed into the carriage assembly, or if the cartridge's #electronic #chip is misaligned, etc.. To verify pin(s) condition, remove all 4 ink cartridges and using a flash light, carefully inspect the internal PRINTHEAD contact pins for visible bending, breakage or damage. Compare each row of pins when making this evaluation. Each pin should be protruding outwards as shown. If the pin is bent down, it is possible to gently pry it back up with a small screwdriver. If a pin is broken, then the PRINTHEAD will need to be replaced. TECH TIP: HP OfficeJet 8702 Printing Problem, Printhead Error: --- If you install a standard HP 952 or high yield HP 952XL ink cartridge into your #HP #OfficeJet 8702 #Printer & observe the "USE #SETUP #CARTRIDGES " #error message on the display, typically "SETUP" cartridges will be required to #reinitialize the printer and will not allow use of HP OEM regular or extra large tanks, 3rd party aftermarket or refilled HP original ink cartridges to function. The error may also be displayed if the #PRINTHEAD assembly is removed & replaced (i.e. #programming requirement). If the original 'SETUP' #cartridges are not available, it is possible bypass the lockout message by performing the following steps. TECH TIP: HP OfficeJet Pro 8630 Ink Empty Error: --- If your #HP #OfficeJetPro8630 (#HP8630) displays a printer alert message such as 'Printhead Missing', 'Printhead Failed' or you observe incorrect #printing #problem including document micro banding / visible artifacts or color shift when using #HP950 or #HP951 #black or #color #ink #cartridges, then the printer's internal PRINTHEAD might have a bent or #damaged contact #pin, the printhead #nozzles could be #clogged with dried ink, or there is insufficient ink inside the PRINTHEAD. When the #HP #cartridge is installed these pins make contact with the #Internal #PRINTHEAD. If there is poor electrical continuity contact between pins and the cartridge's #electronic #chip then errors such as #damaged, #failure or #missing will be displayed, in some cases a printhead failure error may be displayed. To verify pin condition, remove all 4 ink cartridges and using a flash light, carefully inspect the internal PRINTHEAD contact pins for visible damage. Each pin should be protruding outwards as shown. If the pin is bent down, it is possible to gently pry it back up with a small screwdriver. If a pin is broken, then the #removable PRINTHEAD will need to be replaced. For observed print or image defects where one or more colors are missing, it is suggested to remove the PRINTHEAD and thoroughly clean nozzle and electrical contacts: 1. In most cases one of the cartridges is empty but the cartridge’s electronic smart chip is telling the printer it has a full ink load. An "Ink System Failure" #error #condition is generated due to air being ingested into the printer’s internal PRINTHEAD assembly and the presence of ink is not being detected via #sensors inside the ink cartridge. Thus as a #safety precaution to protect the printer, the printer is shutdown to avoid burning out hundreds of small electronic #thermal ink #firing #nozzles inside the PRINTHEAD assembly. TIP: HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 – Instant Ink Program Cost Analysis: --- If you have installed a new #HP952 cartridge (or cartridges) and you observe a #Missing or #Damaged #error on your HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 printer (#HP8710) then it is possible that the internal PRINTHEAD may have a bent or #damaged contact #pin or pins. TECH TIP: HP OfficeJet Pro 6970 Black Ink Printing Problem: --- For the HP OfficeJet Pro 6970 Printer (#HP6970), if you observe a #PRINTHEAD #PROBLEM ‘, ' #FAILED PRINTHEAD ’,' ' #PRINTER #FAILURE ’, or ' PRINTER #MISSING ‘' alert with a numerical #error #code displayed (i.e. 0x6100004a, xxx03), this type of problem could be caused by a printer #firmware glitch or hang, severely #clogged Printhead #nozzles or the #carriage assembly that holds the ink cartridges is hindered by an obstruction. Perform the following steps to resolve: You should first check for #obstructions in the carriage path, by clearing any obstructions from the carriage area inside the printer. 1. With the printer on, disconnect the #power cord from the rear of the printer. 2. Open the door to access the carriage inside of the printer. 3. Look in the carriage path for debris such as crumpled paper or dislodged labels, and then remove any that you find. Next, you will want to perform a hard power #reset on the #printer. With the printer turned ON, disconnect the power cord from the printer. Wait 60 seconds. Reconnect printer power and retest. If the issue still cannot be resolved then you will need to #service the printer. It is suggested to manually clean the underside of the carriage assembly to confirm ink residue is not causing the issue. Finally, the bottom of the #HP #OfficeJet PRINTHEAD could be #clogged with dried or built up ink #residue (common problem!). It is suggested to open the printer and remove all 4 cartridges from the carriage assembly. Obtain several paper towels and fold 3 or 4 times, dampen with water. Place the damp towel into the lower tray area next to the carriage assembly; gently push the towel down to get it as flush with bottom as possible. Gently move the PRINTHEAD back and forth over the paper towel; this action will help remove #residual or #dried ink from the #bottom #surfaces of the PRINTHEAD nozzle plates. You may need to repeat this procedure with a clean towel to ensure all ink residues have been removed. Note: From the time you accessed and removed all the cartridges, you will only have approx. 5 minutes to perform the cleaning with damp towel procedure, otherwise the carriage assembly will automatically, and suddenly, return to the maintenance station. So perform this operation fast! If the error message ‘ PRINTHEAD PROBLEM ’ or numerical printhead code is still observed on the printer, it is suggested you remove all four cartridges and power off the printer. Power on printer and reinstall all four cartridges to see if it clears. If the problem persists then the internal PRINTHEAD may be electrically damaged or at end of life. In the majority of cases complete printer replacement is usually required, since the PRINTHEAD is not a consumer replaceable part. TECH TIP: HP OfficeJet 8022 Printhead Cleaning | No Black or Color Printing: --- When a new or used #HP #OfficeJet 8022 printer (#HP8022) is obtained you may observe the ‘#USE #SETUP #CARTRIDGES’ alert message. Typically the Instant Ink Setup H cartridges are required to reinitialize the printer and will not allow use of HP OEM regular or extra large tanks, 3rd party aftermarket or refilled HP original ink cartridges to function. However, if the original Setup cartridges are not available to calibrate the printer, you may bypass the lockout message by performing the following steps*: 1. Navigate to the SUPPORT MENU by pressing the Return button 4 times in a row (Note: the Return button will not be illuminated but is located at the bottom left of menu). 2. Under SUPPORT MENU, scroll down to the SYSTEM CONFIGURATION MENU. 3. At SYSTEM CONFIGURATION MENU, select OK. 4. At the TRADE OOBE MENU, select OK. 5. At the TRADE SUPPLIES DISABLED MENU, select OK. 6. HP OEM regular, aftermarket or refilled ink cartridges may now be used in the printer. *Note 1: In some cases, the SUPPORT MENU may not initially appear, you may need to first remove the ink cartridges, restart printer, then press the RETURN key four times. If this still does not allow access, then reinstall your used or standard ink cartridges and try again. *Note 2: Where there is no OOBE option (i.e. other printer models), to access the printer’s SERVICE MENU perform the following steps: 1. TECH TIP: HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 Printer Ink System Failure: --- For the #HP #OfficeJet Pro 8710 Printer (#HP8710), if you have installed a #HP952 cartridge (or HP 952XL) and you observe a #Printhead #Failure or #Printer #Failure then it is possible that the internal PRINTHEAD may have a bent or #damaged contact #pin or pins. When the #cartridge is installed the cartridge's smart chip makes direct contact with the #Internal #PRINTHEAD pins, and can sometimes bend (or break) the pins if the cartridge is accidentally or forcibly installed into the carriage assembly, or if the cartridge's #electronic #chip is misaligned, etc.. To verify pin(s) condition, remove all 4 ink cartridges and using a flash light, carefully inspect the internal PRINTHEAD contact pins for visible bending, breakage or damage. Compare each row of pins when making this evaluation. Each pin should be protruding outwards as shown. If the pin is bent down, it is possible to gently pry it back up with a small screwdriver. If a pin is broken, then the PRINTHEAD will need to be replaced. TIP: HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 Missing or Damaged Error: --- Following the #refilling of #HP952 original or aftermarket ink cartridges into your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 printer ( #HP7740 ), if you observe the error condition “There is a #problem with the ink system” or “ #Ink #System #Failure “, this is typically caused by one, or more, of the ink cartridges not having enough ink inside. In most cases one of the cartridges is completely #empty but the cartridge’s electronic #smart #chip is telling the printer it has a full ink load. The respective #error #condition is generated due to air being ingested into the printer’s internal PRINTHEAD assembly and the presence of ink is not being detected via #sensors inside the ink cartridge. Thus as a #safety precaution to protect the printer, the printer is shutdown to avoid burning out hundreds of small electronic #thermal ink #firing #nozzles inside the PRINTHEAD assembly. Remove all four #HP952 (or #HP952XL) #ink #cartridges and weigh them with a scale to help determine which cartridge has an inadequate amount of ink inside. The lightest ink cartridge, in comparison to other available full cartridges, will usually reveal the likely culprit. Replace suspect cartridge, or all four ink cartridges, with brand #new HP #original ink cartridges to completely eliminate root cause of both ink volume and attached chip compatibility. Other printer error messages which could signify a #PRINTHEAD problem include “Ink Cartridge #Failure”, “Cartridge #Damaged”, “ #Missing or Damaged”. HP OfficeJet 6958 – Instant Ink Cartridges Cost Analysis: --- If you observe degraded #HP #OfficeJet6958 #printing output (i.e. #printing #defects, poor image #quality) including #blank #pages, white lines, #missing #black or #color #ink from #printed #images or #text, with your subscription, standard, aftermarket or refilled ink #cartridges, then it is suggested to run the #CLEAN #PRINTHEAD command from the printer’s menu. You may need to perform this action twice to help recover the printer. If the 'CLEAN PRINTHEAD' function does not correct the #print #defect #issue then it is suggested to remove all 4 cartridges from the carriage. You will want to inspect each cartridge for leaks and then re-install, verifying all cartridges properly lock into carriage assembly. If a #HP6958 #output quality issue persists then it is suggested to print a heavy colored #picture or image to see if ink can be blown thru the internal printhead, and hopefully resume normal printing. Depending on which color is missing, create a document with either 100% black color blocks or 100% Cyan, Magenta or Yellow color blocks. Print the document 2-3 times back-to-back and check for normal print output. If each subsequent print starts to look better then the internal printhead may be recovering. However, if one color (or #colors) is not printing, such as the black ink, then the bottom of the PRINTHEAD may be clogged with dried or built up ink. It is suggested to open the printer and remove all 4 cartridges from the carriage assembly. Obtain several paper towels and fold 3 or 4 times, dampen with water. Place the damp towel into the lower tray area next to the carriage assembly; gently push the towel down to get it as flush with bottom as possible. Gently move the PRINTHEAD back and forth over the paper towel; this action will help remove residual or dried ink from the bottom surfaces of the PRINTHEAD nozzle plates. You may need to repeat this procedure with a clean towel to ensure all ink residues have been removed. Note: From the time you accessed and removed all the cartridges, you will only have approx. 5 minutes to perform the cleaning with damp towel procedure, otherwise the carriage assembly will automatically, and suddenly, return to the maintenance station. So perform this operation fast! If the error message ‘ PRINTHEAD PROBLEM ’ or numerical printhead code is observed on the printer, it is suggested you remove all four cartridges and power off the printer. Power on printer and reinstall all four cartridges to see if it clears. If the problem persists then the internal PRINTHEAD may be electrically damaged or at end of life. In the majority of cases complete printer replacement is usually required, since the PRINTHEAD is not a consumer replaceable part. You should also carefully inspect the cartridge's smart chip surfaces for scratches or lines as this could cause cartridge errors to occur. If scratches are observed it is suggested to clean and reseat the cartridge to see if the problem can be not then replace the ink cartridge with a new one. Chapters: 00:00 Introduction 00:25 Clear jams from paper path 03:44 Clear jams from ADF 04:35 Service printer For other helpful videos go to or More support options for your computing device are available at Continue the Conversation: Follow these steps to fix a paper jam on the HP OfficeJet Pro 7720, 7730, 7740 wide format AIO printer. - If you receive a Paper Jam error message on your printer control panel, remove any jams to clear the error and resume printing. - Check the input tray, ink cartridge access area, and rear of the printer, and remove any jammed paper. - With the printer powered on, disconnect the power cord and any other cables. - Unplug the other end of the power cord from the power source. - Slide out the input tray and remove it from the printer. - Check inside the input tray area with a flashlight, and remove any paper. - Open the ink cartridge access door. - Slide the carriage all the way to the right, then all the way to the left, and remove any obstructions. - Shine a flashlight into the ink cartridge access area, and check the right side of the carriage path. - Then check the left side of the carriage path, and remove any paper or obstructions. - Close the ink cartridge access door. - Got to the back of the printer, and squeeze the two tabs on the rear access door, then lower the door. - Squeeze the two tabs on the paper path cover and remove it from the printer. - Squeeze the two tabs, and insert the paper path cover back into the printer. - Plug the power cord directly into a wall outlet. - Reconnect the other end of the power cord, and any other previously attached cables, to the printer. - The printer turns on automatically. - If it does not, press the Power button. - Load paper and reinsert the input tray. - Try to print your document. If the error persists, try to clear the jam using different media. - Slide out the input tray. Remove the paper in it. - Load media into the tray that is thicker than normal printer paper, such as photo paper or cardstock. - Slide the paper width and length guides inward until they touch the edge of the media. TIP: HP OfficeJet Pro 8730 Missing or Damaged Ink Error: --- If you have installed a refilled or aftermarket (non-OEM) #HP 952 ink cartridge into your HP OfficeJet Pro 8730 printer ( #HP8730 ) and observe the #refilling #error message “Ink #Cartridges #Depleted”, " #Cartridges Depleted " or “ #Ink #System #Failure “ alert message, this is typically caused by one, or more, of the #HP ink cartridges not having enough ink inside. In most cases one of the cartridges is empty but the cartridge’s electronic smart chip is telling the printer it has a full ink load. The respective #error #condition is generated due to air being ingested into the printer’s internal PRINTHEAD assembly and the presence of ink is not being detected via #sensors inside the ink cartridge. Thus as a #safety precaution to protect the printer, the printer is shutdown to avoid burning out hundreds of small electronic #thermal ink #firing #nozzles inside the PRINTHEAD assembly. Remove all four #HP952 (or #HP952XL) #ink #cartridges and weigh them with a scale to help determine which cartridge has an inadequate amount of ink inside. The lightest ink cartridge, in comparison to other available full cartridges, will usually reveal the likely culprit. Replace suspect cartridge, or all four ink cartridges, with brand #new HP #original ink cartridges to completely eliminate root cause of both ink volume and attached chip compatibility. TECH TIP: HP "Cartridges Depleted" Error – How To Fix: --- If you have installed a #HP952 Black or Color (colour) Ink cartridge and you observe a #Cartridge #Problem, ink #Error or printer alert condition with your HP #OfficeJet or #OfficeJetPro #printer then it is possible that the internal PRINTHEAD may have a bent or #damaged contact #pin or pins. When the cartridge is installed these pins make contact with the #Internal #PRINTHEAD. To verify pin condition, remove all 4 ink cartridges and using a flash light, carefully inspect the internal PRINTHEAD contact pins for visible damage. Each pin should be protruding outwards as shown. If the pin is bent down, it is possible to gently pry it back up with a small screwdriver. If a pin is broken, then the PRINTHEAD will need to be replaced. You should also carefully inspect the cartridge's smart chip surfaces for scratches or lines as this could cause cartridge errors to occur. If scratches are observed it is suggested to clean and reseat the cartridge to see if the problem can be not then replace the ink cartridge with a new one.
