NAS Brands in 2021 – Which One Should You Choose?
Buying your first Network Attached Storage (NAS) device can be a remarkably daunting task! Even for the most technologically knowledgable, a NAS is a very different kind of device than most of the hardware in your environment. At its heart, it is just a computer (like most things are when you break them down to the basics) that is built for a specific task. However, there are numerous elements of a NAS (such as it always being ON, the constant remote accessibility and focus on storage primarily) that set it apart from most other devices, and this si where a lot of people get a bit intimidated by it. There is always the option of using cloud services, such as DropBox, Google Drive, OneDrive and more, but these are often paid monthly subscription services, involve your data being shared across other services and (most worrying of all) leaves your precious data in a position to be used for analytics without your knowledge OR open to hacking because of the sheer size of the target. Add to this the fact that in most cases, a severed connection to the internet means a severed connection to your data, and the appeal of moving away from 3rd party cloud and on to a NAS is pretty clear. The industry of NAS has been in constant growth for over 30 years, with big players like HP, Dell and IBM steadily losing the home and SMB market to the likes of Synology, QNAP and more. The brand diversity in the field of NAS servers has continued to grow right up until 2021, with the benefit that the way you can interact with your data, what NAS devices can do and the price point of this technology being exceedingly affordable (with fully featured solutions WITH storage media arriving as low as £200). So, today I want to talk about what NAS is, what a NAS can do, and which NAS Brand you should consider buying in 2021.

TrueNAS Core on an Asustor NAS - Complete Installation Guide
How to Install TrueNAS Coe on an Asustor NAS Drive – Step-By-Step Guide
Most new or relatively inexperienced NAS users can be separated into two clear categories. There are those that want to get their hands dirty, spend sensibly on a DiY system in order to take advantage of community-built platforms such as TrueNAS Core, and then there are those that are happy to pay extra for the system to arrive prebuilt, but also know that the software that it comes with can be a little more restrictive. However, it is NOT impossible to have the best of both! Today, I want to show you how to turn the remarkably affordable NAS solutions from Asustor (one of the best Value NAS in the market right now, even when the 2022 range is pretty well hardware equipped with NVMe, , Embedded Graphics CPUs and more) into a TrueNAS Core ZFS Powered NAS system. It is considerably easier than you might think, is very easy to reverse and allows you to have the full customization and freedom of TrueNAS Core, a prebuilt 24×7 designed server system and all whilst still getting exceptional value for money for the hardware. Cool right? Let’s begin the step-by-step guide.

NAS Buyers Guide - Get It RIGHT First Time -
When it comes to brands that I discuss here on the NASCompares when discussing NAS, one brand that always seems to have always existed (yet doesn’t get the same level of online fame as its peers) is Asustor. Founded in 2011, they have well over a decade of solutions under their belt and every time we see periodic refreshes come around from all the brands (every 2-2.5 years or so), we have seen them either be the first to bring some new tech to the market OR be the one that manages to bridge the gaps in the portfolios of the bigger brands with one of their own solutions. Today I want to review exactly that kind of solution, the Asustor Lockerstor 4 Gen 2. Now, that ‘Gen 2’ but is really important and not just a generic mini upgrade. When the original Lockstor series arrived in 2020, it had numerous features that their competitors had BUT crucially managed to consolidate brand unique ones, such as BTRFS and M.2 Slots like Synology, yet an HDMI 4K Port, and an LCD display like QNAP – as I say, they always tend to bridge the gaps! The Lockerstor Gen 2 series arrives on the market 2+ years later and this new Gen 2 refresh brings upgrades to almost every single element of that hardware on offer (with only 1 real exception – and even then, it’s still tip-top). So, let’s take a closer look at that Asustor Lockerstor 4 Gen 2 NAS drive, see if ‘Gen 2’ is as good as it promises and whether this new NAS deserves your data?

ASUS Goes NAS..!? ASUSTOR AS4004T 10Gbps $360 NAS Review(!)
Here is something that in the NAS world represents such good value for money, that I really couldn't fault the AS4000T for anything... The implementation of the UI, the features, the speeds, the consistency, the build quality, the hot swap bays, the automatic plug and play and extra features like making it a mobile HTPC as well, really makes this thing so, so damn good, it is bound to be the perfect solution for anyone needing a NAS on that hits way above its price tag. Also if you only have the budget for a 1Gbps switch at the moment (and it supports aggregation) then you can link up the 3 Nic Ports and get 3x the speeds too. ASUSTOR - Nailed it!

Thanks to a sharp rise in the number of people using cloud storage options like Apple’s iCloud, Google Drive or even a backup solution like Backblaze, having your own NAS at home really isn’t all that necessary for a whole lot of people. But, for the small subset that want fast, local access to their data, or want to run their own basic servers for something like Plex, these two options from Asustor are one of the cheapest ways to do just that.

It's amazing how fast the network attached storage device market is moving. Pretty soon these will no longer be appliances and simply become specialty PC's.
The Asustor AS-202TE is a reasonably priced device that features fairly functional NAS features coupled with the ability to plug it into a television for media playback. It also is powered by an Intel Atom processor similar to what can be found on Windows 8 tablets and netbooks. This particular device runs its own flavor of Linux.
Does it work? Yes, but there are some limitations. I had some issues playing back Blu Ray MKVs using the drive's bundled version of XBMC. Additionally the on board Plex server just can't keep up with the demands that real time encoding requires.
Part of the problem is that it only has a gigabyte of available RAM. I suspect that having it perform as a NAS file server in addition to being a media player will take its toll on resources. After activating the NAS feature I watched the RAM available to the system drop to approximately 680 megabytes (it shares that memory with the video hardware to run the HDMI output), so there's really not a lot to even start with.
Bottom line? It's not the end-all media player. If you're playing back smaller files that don't require a lot of transcoding it might work well. But for those of us looking for a large home theater PC/storage array you'll need to keep looking.

The ASUSTOR Lockerstor 4 Gen2 AS6704T is a beast with beastly options. The gual 2.5 gigabit nics and the option for a 10 gigabit ethernet port were huge sellers for me. I have my place wired for 2.5 gb/s ethernet, and this will give me the ability to upgrade to 10 gibabit if I want to. Also, the new Celeron N5105 is 30% faster than the previous generation model... I didn't think that would be a big deal, but my larger videos do play better now.

Asustor Nimbustor AS5202T and AS5304T 2 5Gbe and 5Gbe NAS
Brand New AS5202T 2-Bay and AS5304T 4-Bay NAS from Asustor
Great news for those that are looking for their brand new powerful NAS purchase in 2019 – Asustor has been announcing a host of brand new NAS drives to be fully unveiled at Computex 2019. Asustor NAS is a brand that has featured often here on NASCompares and although it is fair to say that they are yet to topple Synology and QNAP for the NAS pole position, they have a long and established history of innovative network attached storage solutions, often beating QNAP (typically the most innovative NAS brand yet) to the punch.

Asustor Desktop NAS AS5202T Nimbustor 2 - ~69696
The new Asustor AS5202T and AS5304T NAS are the world’s first to include ports as standard on their chassis and this enabled update 5-gigabit ethernet speeds with the help of link aggregation. Of course, in order to take advantage of this speed, you will need to have 10Gbe (10GBASE-T) connectivity on your network and/or client machine, but this still allows you to use your standard 1Gbe, as well as allow 1Gbe machines on a 10Gbe network to max out their access speeds to a NAS connected via 10Gbe. That is not all though and the AS5202T 2-Bay and AS5304T 4-Bay NAS from Asustor has a lot to offer you in 2019. Let’s find out.

Does the New Nimbustor 4 NAS from Asustor Perform?
As long as I have been in the NAS industry, I can say with confidence that there has been one single constant - gigabit ethernet (1Gbe) via copper (RJ45) has been present on every single device up to this point. From small little DLNA media NAS boxes, all the way upto enterprise-grade rackmounts, the humble 1Gbe port has always been there. Even when a brand has included large 10Gbe ports, it has always been largely outnumbered by 1Gbe ports. This is understandable, the network market hugely features this default port, but with file sizes always getting bigger and increased access speeds being required, it is fair to say that 1Gbe is starting to look rather out of its depth. It is for this reason (or similar) that Asustor's newest generation of NAS drives for home and business in 2019/2020 have taken the very bold move of completely eliminating the 1Gbe RJ45 ports, and instead, making the jump to ports by default instead. I have already touched on this previously on the build-up to, and during, the Computex 2019 event - highlighting why this move into 2.5 gigabit ethernet is such a big, BIG deal, but today I finally have a Nimbustor 4 here in the office and am going work my way through it's hardware, it's software and how the new AS5304T NAS compares with likewise rivals units from Synology and QNAP. Today is the Hardware review and the main question I want to answer is whether the Nimbustor 4 is a gimmick or a genuine game-changing NAS server that will be the start of a new kind of network attached storage. Let's get to work.
Pick Up your Asustor Nimbustor 4 AS5304T NAS from - ~69697
When I first unpacked the shipping container to get to the Nimbustor 4, I was pleasantly surprised by the retail packaging. I shouldn't be - Asustor has always been very graphical in their packaging, going to good lengths to detail what the units can do, the hardware specs, the software specs and generally creating a very appealing and engaging retail design. I often comment warmly on the attention many companies make on retail packaging, despite the fact these devices are almost always purchased from online stores (so by the time you see the packaging, you have already purchased it), it would be a dull, dull world indeed if everything arrived in default brown box packaging (do you hear me Synology?).

Looking for some blazingly fast network-attached storage? The LockerStor 2 from Asustor offers incredible performance and unique features at a great price. Retailing at $400 without drives, is this the high-performance NAS you've been waiting for? Maybe, but only if you know what you're doing.

Overall, the AS7110T a nice release from Asustor. The 10-bay NAS is highlighted by an Intel Xeon 9th generation Quad-Core CPU, up to 64GB of server-grade DDR4-2666 ECC memory, two M.2 NVMe SSD ports for caching, one 10-Gigabit Ethernet port, three ports and a USB 3.2 Gen2 connectivity. Ir can be customized to fit a range of budgets, and can easily scale as a business grows or needs more storage; up to 160TB or 352TB via expansion units. For SMBs that are looking for a high quality NAS with plenty of capacity and performance, the Asustor AS7110T is a good choice. For growing businesses, the AS7110T can grow as the business does, expanding capacity and performance along the way.

NAS Buyers Guide - Get It RIGHT First Time -
When it comes to brands that I discuss here on the NASCompares when discussing NAS, one brand that always seems to have always existed (yet doesn't get the same level of online fame as its peers) is Asustor. Today I want to review exactly that kind of solution, the Asustor Lockerstor 2 Gen 2. Now, that 'Gen 2' but is really important and not just a generic mini upgrade. When the original Lockstor series arrived in 2020, it had numerous features that their competitors had BUT crucially managed to consolidate brand unique ones, such as BTRFS and M.2 Slots like Synology, yet an HDMI 4K Port, and an LCD display like QNAP - as I say, they always tend to bridge the gaps! The Lockerstor Gen 2 series arrives on the market 2+ years later and this new Gen 2 refresh brings upgrades to almost every single element of that hardware on offer (with only 1 real exception - and even then, it's still tip-top). So, let's take a closer look at that Asustor Lockerstor 2 Gen 2 NAS drive, see if 'Gen 2' is as good as it promises and whether this new NAS deserves your data?
