This server has been sitting on a bench in the basement for over 3 years, it's time to properly mount it into the server rack. I got some 1U Sliding Rails for HP from RackSolutions (1U Raven 100-A Rail for HP, SKU 122-2413) for $130. While I could of probably installed it myself, I employed some help from a friend from work. The documentation was crap and the screw covers on the proliant no longer stay closed (still investigating that) but we did get it mounted into the server cabinet. In this video we will show the full installation process, installing the inner and outer rails, to sliding the server into the rack. Since these are sliding rails, you can slide the server in and out of the rack for easy maintenance. Buy the Rails:

Rack Rail Mounting Kits are Explained in this Video Server rail kits come in many flavours including: 4 Post Rack Rails - Versa, Rapid, Sliding, Static, Square Hole, Round Hole 2 Post Rack Rails DiscTech offers every type of Rack Rail Mounting kit for servers, storage arrays, KMM/KVM consoles, routers, switches mounted in standard 19" racks - Dell, HP, IBM, Cisco, Synology, Pure, Nimble Storage. For smaller lighter equipment, you can often attach it directly to the rack. However, for mounting of larger, heavier equipment, such as servers or hard disk arrays you will need rack mounting hardware, known as “rail kits”. To purchase the correct rail kit for your system, you need to know the model of server you are mounting in your rack, and the type of rack. For example if you wished to mount a Dell R730 server in a two-post rack you would need a two-post Dell rail kit for the R730. Two-post racks are used when space is limited or the equipment being mounted is light weight. Two-post racks are most commonly used in the telecommunications industry. Four-post racks are robust, beautiful and have the most advanced cooling options. Four-post racks are ideal for when you have multiple servers to mount. If you have the space we always recommend four-post racks for enterprise environments. There are three types of server racks. Two-post racks (sometimes known as Relay racks), and four-post racks, commonly known as rack cabinets which come in two flavours, four-post round-hole, and four-post square-hole. If you have a two-post rack you can only use a two-post rail kit. All two-post rail kits are threaded. If you have a four-post round hole rack, you need a “regular” four-post rail kit designed for your system. Dell calls round-hole four-post rail kits, Versa rail kits. This eludes to the fact that round-hole four-post rail kits, work in ALL four-post racks (both round and square hole types). If you have a four-post square-hole rack, then you can use any type of four-post rail kit (as threaded hole rail kits can be installed using cage-nuts). Dell calls square-hole four-post rail kits, Rapid or Ready rail-kits. This eludes to the fact that square-hole four-post rail kits are quicker to install as they clip into place, and do not require mounting screws. For some systems, Dell makes combination rail kits called “Rapid/Versa” or “Ready-Rail” kits that can be mounted in any type of 4 post rack. Dell Ready-Rails are the update to “Rapid/Versa”. Ready Rails and are the most universal Dell Rail-kits; they use a unique latch and mounting system that connects directly to all types of rack enclosures with square or round un-threaded holes. It is a tool-less installation. Ready Rails can also be installed in Racks with threaded holes using Dell's Rack adapters, which do require tools. Some Dell rail-kits are also available in sliding or static versions. Sliding-rails allow you to fully extend your server out of the rack for convenient access, without having to remove it from the rack. Static rails do not offer you the ability to move the server, therefore to service it, it has to be removed from the rack. Sliding rails are preferred by most technicians, however, static rails can reduce your infrastructure costs. Cable management arms allow cables at the rear of the server to be tidied up, whilst still facilitating sliding of the server. They are often included within sliding rail kits, but in some instances are sold separately. As with the majority of our IT components, we stock these items for same-day shipment. New NAS Expansion for a New Decade - But Is the QNAP TL-D800C Worth Your Data? If you have been the owner of a NAS server for a few years, you know that available space will always be an eventual barrier in the end. Even in the very early days of network-attached storage it was already being pre-emptively considered. A NAS drive is not like most other computer hardware, in that an upgrade can be conducted on a hardware level, without significant impact on the software level. Sure, you can upgrade your NAS to a new model a few years down the line, but when you do that, it will almost certainly require all your shared files, paths and connected users to be shifted or changed. That is why when the inevitable day when your available space hits zero, you will be wondering how to proceed. Many home and small business users will use this as an opportunity to upgrade their NAS to a new model, move the HDDs over (in their RAID), all the while crossing their fingers and praising their backups, with 'almost' 100% confidence that the data migration will be fine and drives will continue to function as they did on day 1. But that still needs you to spend big on new hardware almost certainly more than your first NAS, as well as the loss of time (very dependant on your own setup) to repairing, replacing and recreating those existing network connections. It is for reasons like this that many users will consider the often more cost-effective AND easier to adapt NAS expansion option. The ability to add an additional HDD enclosure that will 'bolt-on' additional hard drive bays to their existing NAS RAID storage system and allow you to expand your available space has been around for almost as long as NAS itself, sometimes being used as local sync'd backups, as completely separate storage pools or just expanding the primary RAID accordingly. Today I want to discuss one of the several new QNAP NAS expansions revealed in their new TR and TL expansion series(full guide here), the brand new TL-D800C. This is their new 8 SATA Bay expansion device that arrives with USB 3.1 Gen 2 USB-C Support (10Gb/s) and is designed to be an affordable and reliable way to expand your storage, arriving at just over £400 - it is a whole lot lower in price than a new 8-Bay NAS, with the added benefit that it is also PC and Mac supported, so it can be used as a traditional DAS too. Some might argue that as it is JBOD, it has limited use outside of a NAS expansion (whereby the NAS CPU can conduct the RAID configuration and support) but we fast see a resurgence in JBOD use, with many users looking at thunderbolt and SAS solutions that have fast access and just do what they are told! There is no avoiding that the TL-D800C is not for everyone, with some looking at the TR series (hardware RAID built-in) instead. So, let's take a look and serif the QNAP TL-D800C deserves your data. QNAP has been producing rackmount solutions quite early on in their portfolio, arguable earlier than the majority of NAS brand companies (so not counting the SAN or non-software featured SAS boxes that came before of course). The QNAP TS-h1283XU-RP is a rackmount 2U NAS based on the company’s QuTS Hero architecture. QNAP QuTS Hero is a new operating system that combines QTS with a 128-bit ZFS file system and is aimed at optimizing performance and data protection. The new OS on the TS-h1283XU-RP NAS is said to deliver “server-grade performance” for use cases such as mission-critical file server, virtualization server, VDI, collaborative video editing, or efficient file backup and recovery applications. ZFS and QuTS hero give QNAP an opportunity to ship NAS systems for SMBs that are more hardened from a data integrity standpoint and offer more enterprise-style features, like data reduction and efficient snapshots. The QNAP TS-h1283XU-RP specifically, does this relatively economically as well. At a street price of $4k bare it’s not inexpensive, but for a 12-bay rackmount NAS with these capabilities, it’s not unreasonable either. The big question is around performance/workload matching. Performance in small block workloads wasn’t great, but the system handled big blocks pretty well for a SATA-based system. We’d prefer something with NVMe as a primary system, but for branch/remote offices or as a replication/backup target, the QNAP TS-h1283XU-RP does well. I thought I had more choice, of what server to install in my rack,, where I took out an older HP generation 6. But after looking at my rack rails. I found that I only had shorter rails laying around. Unlike QTS, in QuTS hero, if you have a RAID array with 8 disks, you cannot expand storage by adding an extra disk to the RAID array. Instead, an extra RAID array of say 4 disks must be created.
