This is the Ferrari 458 Challenge Evoluzione race car. How does it compare to the Speciale road car? Subscribe to our YouTube channel Subscribe to the mag Ferrari has never forgotten its illustrious sporting heritage - the Italian firm produces a huge range of racers for customers to compete in motorsport with. This is the Ferrari 458 Challenge: an entry-point to all of that. The car is built for one-make Ferrari Challenge competitions – run by Ferrari since 1993 in Europe, the US and the Asian Pacific. It was introduced in 2011 and recently updated for 2014 - in the shape of the Challenge Evoluzione. We got to sample it at Ferrari’s famous Fiorano test track the hallowed home of racing at Ferrari. The car is based on the excellent 458 Italia, and uses the same 562bhp V8 engine, which is left unaltered and in the same state of tune. It’s matched to the road car’s seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, although here the ratios have been altered to deliver better torque delivery at lower revs. And if you want to see the 458 Challenge in action the European Series is coming to Silverstone this weekend, as part of the Ferrari Racing Days extravaganza on the 13 and 14th of September. A grid of 36 458’s will take part in a pair of 30-minute races, while other track action includes displays of the incredible FXX and 599XX Corsa Clienti cars, plus host of owners driving a range of old Formula One Ferraris as part of the unique F1 Clienti programme. Ferrari 458 Speciale review: Subscribe to our YouTube channel Subscribe to the mag The Ferrari 458 Speciale, based on the already excellent 458 Italia, is filled with extra technology that aims to make it into one of the most thrilling supercars that money can buy. It gets an uprated version of the standard car's V8 engine, with a staggering 597bhp -- meaning it goes from 0-62mph in just three seconds. The aerodynamics of the Ferrari 458 Speciale have been improved as well, to decrease drag and boost downforce -- just like an F1 car. Plus, it shed 90kg from the normal car's weight, with over 20kg shaved off of the interior. It's a fantastic setup inside the car, with carbonfibre everywhere -- from the seats to the door trims and dashboard. The Ferrari 458 was always brilliant, but this Speciale edition is, well, a bit special. The engine is a thing of joy -- once the revs go over 5,000, it just takes off, and it sounds incredible, too. You can feel the new aero working through fast corners, and it feels glued to the road and incredibly agile. It shines on the track, but it's actually remarkably good on the road. The ride is a bit firm, and the engine is very noisy, but you can forgive all of that when you get to the right road. The engine has so much torque and it's so responsive that it's brilliant fun here, too. There's also a slide control system that allows just enough slip before it intervenes to prevent a disaster. Ultimately this car's aggressive nature is a small price to pay for the extra on-track focus you get. Is it worth £30,000 more than the standard car, though? Well, if you've got the sort of money that will buy one of these cars the question you really need to ask yourself is: do I want to own one of the most thrilling and intoxicating cars in the world?

In this video, I show a depreciation analysis of the Ferrari 458. It is important to note that all the values are averages and need to be interpreted as such. When we analyse the market for the Ferrari 458, we can see that prices start at around EUR ,- and go up all the way till EUR ,-. Interestingly, the spider is priced significantly higher. When we consider the depreciation per year, it becomes evident that the spider is actually increasing in value and that the coupe is decreasing. The Ferrari 458 spider would therefore from a yearly perspective be a good investment. The depreciation for the Ferrari 458 coupe is, however, not as bad as it seems here. It is, for example, in line with a Porsche Gt4. Also when we look to kilometer versus price, we see that spider is doing slightly better than the coupe. The spider depreciates at a rate of EUR 519,- per 1000 km and the coupe at a rate of EUR 658,- per 1000 km.
