In-depth walkaround of this 2018 Mercedes AMG C63 S Coupe with highlighted features, interior shots & revs! Click here for an in-depth description and view of the car: The 2019 Mercedes-AMG C63 S Coupe mid-life facelift has arrived in Affalterbach’s attempt to keep their most popular performance coupe ahead of the pack, so what’s changed? The main external difference making the facelift instantly recognisable is the ‘Panamericana Grille’ borrowed from the new GT63, combine this with added fins in the front apron, updated headlights, larger exhaust tailpipes plus a new rear diffuser and the C63 S is looking meaner than ever. Mechanically the C63 S has received one major update in the form of a new 9-Speed TRONIC PLUS gearbox lifted straight from the E63 S allowing for increased mid-range acceleration and improved cruising fuel economy in 8th and 9th. In terms of the engine the phrase “you can’t improve on perfection” springs to mind, with class-leading power, huge smooth torque delivery and one of the best exhaust notes of the turbocharged era, it really is no wonder this engine is appearing in more and more cars across the Mercedes range. Inside there is an all new steering wheel with the addition of some rather high-tech touchscreen button hanging between the spokes, these allow control of a whole host of existing and all-new performance settings on the new C63 S. In front of this is a fully digital and configurable instrument cluster nestled into the dash as well as a wider and slimmer infotainment screen sitting above the centre console. The new performance settings and technology include a welcome ‘Slippery’ setting for AMG Dynamics and also another layer of control targeted at the rear differential, giving the options of Basic, Advanced, Pro & Master to control how much the rear differential locks and ultimately how sideways you go. In addition to this the traction control now has a 9-stage tweaked version of that found in the flagship AMG GT-R, thankfully to help navigate your way through this tech-fest there is an ‘Individual’ mode which can set up everything just as you like at the touch of a button. The ride quality and compliance in the chassis has been retuned making for a softer ride and much better day to day usability in comfort mode with the harder suspension settings of Sport, Sport+ and Race for greater control when required. Overall the new facelift C63 S has brought in some fairly significant changes which together place it firmly at the front of the pack as the super coupe to beat in 2019. #Mercedes #C63S #RomansInternational Music by Whitesand:

In fact, as a sub-brand of Mercedes-Benz, it sells more cars per year than other premium car makers do in total. Its C63 family, in particular, has been very successful – and it's time to welcome a new member to the clan, the loud, proud C63 S Cabriolet. The Cabriolet joins the sedan, the estate (or wagon) and the Coupe in the Australian market. It runs the same monster twin turbo V8, sends all its power to the rear end… and has an exhaust note that your neighbours are going to hate. It'll still do 0-100km/h in 4.1 seconds, which isn't mucking around. It sells for just on $180,000, which is almost $18,000 dearer than the C63 coupe on which it's largely based. It's not expected to be the biggest seller of the four... but as a way to experience just what the C63 is all about, there's really no better way. All four C63s have distinct personalities – the sedan is fast and comfortable, the wagon is a little heavier and softer but still very quick... and the coupe just wants to eat your face off with its aggressive suspension tune. The Cabriolet is different again. It's a bit heavier than the rest of the range, and that weight is positioned lower in the car. That, combined with the lack of a roof and a softer suspension tune, gives the Cab a more fluid, languid feel that gives it a more relaxed demeanour than any of the other three. It still steers with precision though and the huge brakes and excellent gearbox make it a very fun car to drive even at a sedate pace. It's much more fun when you turn up the wick though! Conversation within the cabin is easy when the roof is down, even at 110, and the four seater is refined and comfortable -when you want it to be! Dropping the roof takes just 20 seconds, and it can be done up to 50km/h. And even at highway pace, it's quiet and relatively wind free in the cabin. That roof has to be stowed somewhere, and that somewhere is the boot so you lose most of your luggage space. Mercedes doesn't expect to sell too many of these extreme convertibles, and that's not a surprise. Even within Merc's own broad range, there are more practical cars for the same money that are a lot less showy than the C63 Cabriolet. It also offers a wealth of individualisation options, including four body versions, two output variants and an extensive range of optional extras. "The AMG C-Class is our best-selling model series and therefore a key cornerstone of our company's success of recent years. We have therefore increasingly expanded our C-Class offer: customers can now choose between twelve models from the C-Class family. As part of the latest facelift, we have upgraded all variants of the model series even more substantially," says Tobias Moers, CEO of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. "This relates to the 43-series models and especially, of course, to the AMG C63. The perfected driving dynamics and expressive design underscore the powerful, muscular character of the rear-wheel-drive icon." The comprehensive model update includes a raft of measures with one thing in mind above all: to further sharpen the longitudinal and lateral dynamics. One of the new features in the C63 is the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 9G transmission with wet start-off clutch (previously 7-speed transmission). It allows faster bursts of speed and more spontaneous responses to the driver's accelerator pedal input. In addition, the rear-axle limited-slip differential fitted as standard is now electronically controlled on all versions, allowing more precise traction control. AMG TRACTION CONTROL (in the C63 S) enables the slip on the rear axle to be controlled in nine stages, which keen drivers should appreciate, especially when driving on the race track and under changeable road conditions. The new, integrated dynamic handling control system AMG DYNAMICS enhances driving enjoyment, too.

Depending on body style, the C 63 S accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds, the C 63 in 4.0 seconds. The C 63 S Saloon and Coupé have a top speed of 290 km/h, the C 63 S Estate and Cabriolet 280 km/h, while the figure for the C 63 variants is 250 km/h (electronically limited in each case). The C 63 can also have its top speed increased as an option. New options for all four body styles include trim in anthracite open-pore oak wood, open-pore walnut wood plus the combination of longitudinal-grain aluminium for the doors and black open-pore ash wood for the centre console. Additionally available are AMG trim in carbon fibre/light longitudinal-grain aluminium and AMG trim in matt silver fibreglass. The options for the upholstery are nappa leather in black, black with grey accents, red pepper/black, platinum white pearl/black and, as a new option, magma grey/black with yellow contrasting topstitching. For the Saloon and Estate, a combination from the designo range comes with diamond quilting in saddle brown/black and platinum white pearl/black. The handling characteristics of the new C 63 can be modified by selecting from the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT drive programs: "Slippery", "Comfort", "Sport", "Sport+", "RACE" (in the C 63 S) and "Individual". This changes important parameters such as engine and transmission response, steering characteristics, suspension damping, and exhaust sound. The programs are selected using the paddle in the centre console and then visualised in the instrument cluster and on the multimedia display. For improved traction and driving dynamics, all C 63 and C 63 S models are equipped with an electronically controlled rear-axle limited-slip differential. It reduces the slip on the inner wheel. The result is that it allows the driver to accelerate out of corners earlier thanks to the improved traction. The car remains more stable when braking from high speeds, and the limited-slip differential also improves traction when accelerating fast from a standing start. The greatest benefit of the electronically controlled locking differential is the especially sensitive and fast control, which pushes the critical threshold higher, making it even easier to drive at the vehicle's limits. The eight-cylinder biturbo engine is already used in numerous AMG performance vehicles. A characteristic feature is that the two turbochargers are positioned not on the outside of the cylinder banks, but inside the cylinder "V". The main advantages of this design are the compact engine construction and optimal response. The spray-guided direct petrol injection system ensures clean and efficient combustion with high thermodynamic efficiency. Fast-acting piezo injectors enable multiple injections of fuel to be delivered to the engine on demand and with the utmost precision. The large cooling system guarantees the performance of the engine even under extreme loading ‑ such as at track days on a racing circuit. The same is true for the flow-optimised cylinder heads, which are made of a special heat-resistant alloy. Continuous adjustment of the intake and exhaust camshafts improves power delivery and efficiency. It delivers excellent throttle response and optimises the charge cycle for every operating point. An oil pump with variable control also contributes to low fuel consumption.

To slightly misquote Bob Dylan, how many parts must a manufacturer change before it becomes a true facelift? Well, in the case of the C63 S, Mercedes reckons the car's mid-life facelift contains 6500 new or revised parts. After counting at least 15 of the 6500 new bits, a refreshed interior and one of the great road car engines left well alone, we went on a road trip to the Bathurst 12 Hour to see what's what.
