Eurovision 1981: Heavens, HEAVENS, they’ve done it again! | Super-cut with animated scoreboard
An edited down version of the (rather amazing) 1981 Eurovision Song Contest in Dublin with a scoreboard using today’s technology. Nothing but a fun lock-down project.
This edit will give a flavour of the evening (4th April) with Terry Wogan’s UK commentary but this version has pictures from ORF, the Austrian broadcaster (thanks to ‘ESC Stuff’ for the upload to YouTube).
In the edit there’ll be some of the intro, a flavour of each entry, and then the scoring sequence edited with a scoreboard built and designed using technology used since 2003 (when the scoreboard became reactive and reordered when points were awarded). Special mentions (edits) this year go to Denmark (dancing), Ireland (lyrics, outfits) and Portugal (lyrics, sounds and outfits).
*DESIGN AND THE BOARD*
RTÉ’s stage this year was impressively large, or at least it feels that way on television. Although the backing didn’t move like in 1980, the stage uses the pattern of the sort of Celtic stuff you see in the opening montage but it varies with different colour schemes. Having said that, the overall colour of this contest is so I followed with an updated colour scheme. I’ve also added flying numbers, not seen until 1998 in the real scoreboards and a handy hint at the bottom as to what song is being voted for. I felt this was helpful when lost deep in the voting sequence.
Compared to last year, there was lots of trouble with the real scoreboard and the scrutineers. Perhaps the week of ‘Irish coffee’ that Wogan mentions crept up on them. The look seems entirely led by function rather than design. Notice the different different one at the back of the hall (and on the wiki page) to the one at the end of the title sequence. Lots of different typefaces and colour schemes - ‘branding’ wasn’t really evident in the Contest yet.
My board uses the same logic as 1980, not used in the actual contest are ranked by points, 12s, 10s, 8s and then their position in the running order.
*TRANSFER NEWS* (source: Wiki)
OUT: Italy - RAI stated that interest had diminished in the country and decided not to enter. Morocco as their then King decided not to return because of the poor finish in 1980.
BACK: Yugoslavia (last in 1976) and Israel (1979)
IN: Cyprus! (with an group called Island)
*INTERVAL ACT*
"Timedance" performed by Planxty featuring dance performance by the Dublin City Ballet - seemed to go nicely with song 20, so you get a flavour of just the pictures this time.

Eurovision Song Contest 1981
Date: 4 April 1981
Host Venue: RDS Simmonscourt - Ballsbridge, Dublin, Ireland
Presenter: Doireann Ní Bhriain
Musical director: Noel Kelehan
Directed by Ian McGarry

Interval act: "Timedance" performed by Planxty featuring dance performance by the 'Dublin City Ballet'
The Eurovision Song Contest 1981 was the 26th edition of the annual Eurovision Song Contest. It took place in Dublin, Ireland, following Johnny Logan's win at the 1980 contest in The Hague, Netherlands with the song "What's Another Year". It was the second time the contest took place in Ireland, after 1971. The contest was held at the RDS Simmonscourt on Saturday 4 April 1981, and was hosted by Doireann Ní Bhriain.
Twenty countries participated in the contest, equalling the record of the 1978 edition. Cyprus made their début this year, while Israel, and Yugoslavia both returned, after their one-year and five-year absence, respectively. Morocco and Italy, which had both participated the year prior, decided not to enter.
The winner was the United Kingdom with the song "Making Your Mind Up", performed by Bucks Fizz, written by Andy Hill and John Danter. This was the United Kingdom's fourth victory in the contest, following their wins in 1967, 1969 , and 1976. Germany finished second for the second consecutive year, while France finished third. Norway finished last, with its third nul points.
Bucks Fizz's performance on the Eurovision stage included a dance-routine where the two male members ripped the skirts off the two female members only to reveal mini-skirts, and today stands as one of the defining moments in the contest's history.
Runner-up Lena Valaitis was in good spirits while talking to the press following the contest and largely unconcerned about losing. Swedish singer Björn Skifs however was more outspoken saying; "This was not a song contest, it was a show – all these dancing girls, they take away from the songs. I also think there should be a change in the rules to allow us to sing in English. Then we would really be able to compete." Harald Tusberg, head of light entertainment for Norwegian television was upbeat about Norway's 'nul points' result as he claimed that their entry would be remembered above many others; "Who remembers who came second or third – people will remember us!". Finn Kalvik himself conceded graciously saying that he had enjoyed the week's holiday.
Germany, who had never won the contest up to this point, were becoming increasingly frustrated with their second placings in this and the previous year's contest and made a concerted effort for the following year. This was to pay off, as in 1982 they finally clinched their first victory which was achieved in an overwhelming manner.
Decades later, Debbie Cameron, who represented Denmark with Tommy Seebach, revealed in a book about Seebach that she was contacted by a BBC employee, who told her that Bucks Fizz's victory was planned. According to the employee, he had witnessed how BBC technicians had sabotaged the sound checks during the rehearsal of the Danish, the Israeli and the Western German performances. This claim however ignores the fact that the BBC did not host the 1981 Contest.
On August 22, 1981, the town of Mysen in Norway held a televised, live concert to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the contest, despite the recent 26th edition. The show Songs of Europe featured all but eight of the former winners of the contest, although one of the missing winning artists, Teddy Scholten, attended the event but did not perform.

🔴 1982 Eurovision Song Contest from Harrogate/England: Full Show (English Commentary by Terry Wogan)

Executive producer: Michael Hurll
Host broadcaster: British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC)
Opening act: Introductions by Jan Leeming
Interval act: Pictures from Yorkshire and Castle Howard
Number of entries: 18

Withdrawing countries: France, Greece
The Eurovision Song Contest 1982 was the 27th edition of the annual Eurovision Song Contest. It was held on 24 April 1982 in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, United Kingdom. The presenter was Jan Leeming.
The German entrant, Nicole, was the winner with the song "Ein bißchen Frieden". Germany received times as many points as runner-up Israel, which was a record under the current scoring system until 2009, when Norway received times as many points as Iceland. The song also cemented Ralph Siegel and Bernd Meinunger, the song's composers, into German Eurovision tradition, writing 18 Eurovision songs between them before and after "Ein bißchen Frieden", 13 of which were for Germany.
This was the first time that Germany won the contest. They have competed in the finals every year (with the exception of 1996) since the contest's inception. Germany won again in 2010.
The opening of the contest showed a map of Europe, with the translation "Where is Harrogate?" popping up on-screen from the languages of the various countries. The question was always in the language in which the respective country's song was performed, with the exception of Ireland. The Irish entry was sung in English, but the translation of the question in the map was in Irish. Then the map zoomed into Harrogate's location in Yorkshire, followed by an introduction video spotlighting the town.
Greece was due to participate in the contest with the song "Sarantapente Kopelies" performed by Themis Adamantidis. Although drawn to perform in second place, ERT withdrew the entry a few weeks before the contest.
In November 1981, France's national broadcaster, TF1, declined to enter the Eurovision Song Contest for 1982, with the head of entertainment, Pierre Bouteiller, saying, "The absence of talent and the mediocrity of the songs were annoyance set in. [Eurovision is] a monument to insanity [sometimes translated as "drivel"]." Antenne 2 became the new broadcaster for Eurovision after public outcry, returning the country to the Contest in 1983.
The tradition of previous year's winners handing over the prize to current winners was not followed by Bucks Fizz, winners in 1981.
Irish band Chips lost out in their national finals, which, had they been successful, would have led to the unique situation of two bands in the same Eurovision with the same name (the other being Sweden).
Starter list and results:
There were 18 competitors in this year's final. No year since has had this few competitors in the final of the competition.

🔴 1973 Eurovision Song Contest Full Show From Luxembourg (No Commentary) - Host: Helga Guitton
Date: 7 April 1973
Host Venue: Grand Théâtre Luxembourg City, Luxembourg
Presenter: Helga Guitton
Conductor: Pierre Cao
Executive supervisor: Clifford Brown
Host broadcaster: Compagnie Luxembourgeoise de Télédiffusion (CLT)
Opening act: Pierre Cao and the orchestra performing "Aprés toi" to a montage of views of Luxembourg and behind the scenes.
Interval act: Clown Charlie Rivel
The Eurovision Song Contest 1973 was held in Luxembourg. In a back-to-back victory, the country won the contest with the song "Tu te reconnaîtras", this being Luxembourg's fourth win. The voting was a very close one, with Spain finishing only 4 points behind and Cliff Richard of the United Kingdom (who had come second in 1968) another 2 points further back. The winning song scored the highest score ever achieved in Eurovision under any voting format until 1975, recording 129 points out of a possible 160, which represented almost 81% of the possible maximum. This was partly due to a scoring system which guaranteed all countries at least two points from each other country.
The language rule forcing countries to enter songs sung in any of their national languages was dropped, so performers from some countries sang in English. The event was marked by controversy when the Spanish song, "Eres tú" (by Mocedades), was accused of plagiarism due to reasonable similarities in the melody with the Yugoslav entry from the 1966 contest ("Brez besed" sung by Berta Ambrož); however, "Eres tú" was not disqualified. After finishing second in the contest, the song went on to become a huge international hit.
The somewhat elliptical lyrics to Portugal's entry "Tourada" provided sufficient cover for a song that was clearly understood as a blistering assault on the country's decaying dictatorship. Also, the word "breasts" was used during Sweden's song entry. However, no action was taken by the EBU. An argument broke out between the singer Maxi and her Irish delegation over how the song should be performed. During rehearsals she repeatedly stopped performing in frustration. When it began to appear possible that Maxi might withdraw from the contest, RTÉ immediately sent over another singer, Tina Reynolds, to take her place just in case. In the end Miss Reynolds wasn't needed as Maxi did perform, with her entry earning 10th place on the scoreboard. (Reynolds would perform the following year.)
This contest holds the record for the most watched Eurovision Song Contest in the United Kingdom, and is also the 18th most watched television show in the same country, with an estimated million tuning in on the night. Cliff Richard represented the UK with the song Power to All Our Friends. He came 3rd with 123 points. The winner though was Anne-Marie David with 'Tu te reconnaîtras'. In the UK it was released in English under the title "Wonderful Dream" and released on Epic. It made number 13.
In the light of events at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, there were fears of a terrorist threat, particularly directed against Israel's first-ever entrant, leading to unusually tight security for the contest. This gave rise to one of the best-known Eurovision anecdotes, frequently recounted by the UK's long-serving commentator Terry Wogan. He recalled that the floor manager strongly advised the audience to remain seated while applauding the performances, otherwise they risked being shot by security forces.

Brotherhood of Man performing (and cutely dancing to) "Save Your Kisses for Me", the UK entry at the 1976 Eurovision Song Contest.
After winning that year's vote by one of the largest margins in ESC history, this song became one of the biggest hits to come out of the contest, even scoring big in the US (something quite rare for a Eurovision entry). It especially soared in the British charts, of course, where the group subsequently had two more #1 hits with songs "Figaro" and "Angelo".
