How to refill the toner cartridge and reset the page counter in Brother HL-2170W, HL-2140, HL-2150, TN360, TN2120 DCP7030 DCP 7045, MFC 7440N, MFC 7840W, MFC 7320 Laser Printers and Multi-function. There are 2 different toner cartridges available for these machines: low yeld and standard yeld: TN330 and TN360 (USA) TN2110 and TN2120 (Europe) TN2130 and TN2150 (Asia). The TN330/2110/2130 cartridge prints 1500 pages at 5%. The TN360/2120/2150 prints 2600 pages at 5%. The difference between the 2 type of cartridge is the toner load and the reset gears sets. The purpose of the set of reset gears is to reset the printer page counter when a new toner cartridge is installed. The low yeld gears have a shorter gear train and a different color. This is how the machine knows which cartridge are you installing, a standard or low-yeld cartridge. All new machines are sold with a starter toner cartridge rated for 1000 pages. Starter toner cartridge do not have reset gears and is not possible to refill it, unless you change the side cover plate. When you install a new toner cartridge, the bias voltage in the printer is set to a high voltage. As the cartridge is used, the bias voltage is reduced gradually down. This is necessary because the new toner cartridges at the start has a tendency to print light. As the cartridge is used, the density increases and to keep the density level even throughout its life, the density bias voltage is reduced accordingly. When you install a new toner cartridge, the reset gear of the cartridge reset the page count to 0, and the bias voltage is reset to the high voltage point. Different yields means different decreases in density over time, so Brother uses different reset gears for different cartridge yeld. Resetting Brother MFC 7840W, MFC 7360N, MFC 8480: -- Open the front cover of your machine -- Press the Clear/Back button, the display will show "Replace DRUM? 1 Yes 2 No" - Type *00 on the keypad. The dispaly will show "accepted". -- Close the front cover. The toner is reset Required Supplies: - Screwdriver - Isoprophyl alcohol - Toner for Brother (65 gr. for the low yeld cartridge, 100 gr. For the standard yeld) How to print a test page: Press the "GO" Button 3 time Error messages: There are 4 leds to indicate the status of the printer. The more common error messages are: - Toner light blinking and status light on: Toner low - Toner light on and status light on: Change toner - Drum light blinking: Drum life near the end - Drum and error lights blinking: Drum problem - Error light on: No paper - Error light blinking: printer cover open, paper jam or memory full - All four lights blinking: Call service Repetitive defect chart: Drum: 75.0 mm Upper fuser roller: 78.5 mm Lower fuser roller: 78.5 mm Cartridge developer roller: 41.0 mm Horizontal black streaks over the page: change cartridges. If it does not solve the problem, in the bottom of the paper tray there is a small metal ground terminal. On my recently purchased Brother HL-L8260CDW (firmware version: ) that uses TN441/443 toners, I figured out how to access the hidden menu that enables reset of each toner level. It's super easy to perform. See how I did it in the video. Steps: 1. Open the front cover for toner replacement and keep it open until all done 2. Press Back once to clear the error message about the cover being open 3. While holding down Cancel button with one finger press Back once with another finger then release Cancel button, and quickly press Back once again 4. Scroll through each toner and reset if needed Hope this is useful. (Note: not sure if this menu actually resets the toner level under the current firmware version. I will have to wait until my toners go low so I can try it myself. :) so until then, I am just happy to find a way to get to the menu.) [Bonus] See below for How to access another hidden menu called "Deep sleep" where user can disable the deep sleep mode on this L8260CDW. Via menu, get to - General Setup / Ecology / Sleep Time / then While minute is blinking, press Down Arrow(or Minus) + Cancel button at the same time (Note: on my L8260CDW that is only wirelessly set up, the printer wakes up without any problem when job is sent even when in deep sleep, so I didn't need to turn deep sleep mode off.)

Prints excellent B&W or color text and basic graphics, but light only light duty scan/copy. This printer comes with 4 starter toner cartridges pre-installed: yellow, magenta, cyan, and black. The printer measures 16” wide, 14” high, and 18” deep. The weight of the printer with all the cartridges installed is just under 50 lbs. The paper tray holds up to 250 sheets of printer paper, up to legal-size. In the middle on the front is a single-sheet document feeder, for specialty paper like labels, envelopes, and card stock. When the lid is open, the height is 26.5” and you’ll need at least 7” behind the printer to access the rear panel. The scanner bed also lifts up for clearing paper jams, and there’s a pop out lift for multi-page printouts. In the back lower right corner is the USB-B port for wired connections, though a cable is not included. In the rear lower left hand corner is the plug port for the power cable. The first time you turn the printer on it will take about 2 minutes to fully initialize. To set the printer up wirelessly, don’t press the WiFi button. Instead, use the main menu and find the WLAN Setup Wizard. Note that because of the LCD interface, you’ll have to key in the network password one character at a time by scrolling up or down through every number, letter capital and lowercase, and symbol found on the keyboard. While typing in the password was a bit annoying, I was able to connect on the first try and it only took a few minutes. Instead of the Setup Wizard you can try the WPS option if your router supports it, which doesn’t require you to manually key in the password. If you don’t have a WiFi network, this printer does not support an Ethernet connection and you would have to connect the printer via USB to your computer. You can also connect directly to a device’s WiFi for example on a mobile phone. After setting up the printer wirelessly, I installed the drivers and software by downloading them from Brother’s website, and the entire setup process took about 15 minutes. After hitting print on your computer, it only takes a few seconds for the information to be sent wirelessly to the printer before it wakes up and starts printing. Text printed on this machine is clear and crisp; even very small sized font remains legible. The printer performed well printing simple color graphics and lines are smooth and solid with good saturation. When making color copies, it'll take about 20 seconds to finish a single page though for multiple copies or pages it can print up to 25 pages per minute. When comparing the color copy of a photo, there was a bit of darkening and uneven gray tones in the color gradient areas of the copy versus the original photo. I could clearly see vertical and horizontal banding as well. Looking at the more detailed part of the image, the differences were not as obvious. However, the copied version had a slightly darker coloration and additional shadowing in some places. For mobile printing from an Android device, you’ll need to install 2 apps: Mopria Print Service and Brother iPrint&Scan. Apple iOS device users can use AirPrint with this printer and won’t need to install any apps. When looking at the printout from a digital photo, the printer didn’t seem to produce the full range of colors of a detailed photograph. Also, the contrast in the print appears a bit reduced compared to the digital image on the screen resulting in loss of detail and vibrancy. Banding is apparent in the printout. When scanning and photocopying in black and white, sometimes text bleeds through from the opposite side. The biggest drawback to scanning and copying on this machine is that there isn’t an automatic document feeder, so this means you can only process documents one at a time, one side at a time. Dual-sided printouts are about half the speed, because the sides don’t print simultaneously. Overall, this printer prints really nice black and white text and basic graphics in color. Prints of detailed color photos on the other hand don’t look nearly as impressive, and you won’t be able to get gallery quality prints from it. For a small business or home office that mostly prints documents, and only has infrequent need for small quantity scanning or photocopying, this printer does a great job. It’s is easy to setup and share on your home network, provided you use WiFi, but also allows you to print from a mobile device or opt for a wired USB connection. One nice feature that might be useful in an office setting, too, is the ability to password-protect your queued print documents or even the scanner function with a PIN in addition to standard network security protocols.
