Toyota took the absolutely wretched looking last generation Prius and gave it an extreme makeover that didn't just make the Toyota Prius "not ugly," but rather enormously desirable. Let me remind you: we're talking about a Toyota freaking Prius here. I'm definitely interested in putting one in my own driveway after I test the Prius Prime, which is the only model I would consider. Why? We’re checking in once again with our 2021 Toyota Prius Prime, which has seen quite a bit of pavement since our last update; 2,500 miles of it, to be exact. That brings our total up to 8,000 miles in the five months we’ve had it. In our last update we noted a slight decrease in mileage and unfortunately that trend has continued. We’re sitting around 54.1 miles-per-gallon down from our peak of 62. It could be attributed to the colder weather, which requires the gasoline engine to run more often. It’s been really cold here lately so we’ve been running the Prius’ heated seats and steering wheel at full blast. It helps kill the chill, but the gas engine has to compensate for it. Now, we hear it kick on, but we don’t really feel it. That’s a testament to Toyota’s mastering of the hybrid handoff. So, our fuel economy might be suffering a tad, but our daily driving comfort is not. In fact, this little hybrid recently took us all the way down to Georgia for our yearly Roebling Round-up, and it handled fairly well in the moderate ice storm we passed through. It also made the 10-or-so hours plenty comfortable. The Prius Prime is still a welcomed addition to our Long Term Fleet. The re-imagined part of the equation is — or should be, if you’ve paid even passing attention to Priuses past — immediately visible. Gone is the deliberately quirky, look-at-how-green-I-am nerdiness that always seemed a boast — or a condescension — that the environmentally-friendly looked to lord over those less "enlightened." In its place comes a modernity — dare I say sophistication? — that transforms the Prius from sandals-with-socks dorkiness to Manolo Blahnik fashionista. Style is always a personal judgement, but it’s hard to imagine anyone not preferring the new Prime’s swoopy sophistication over the previous version’s overly-earnest pointed-finger. The electrified automobile — starting with Tesla’s ground-breaking Model S — long ago left virtue-signalling styling behind. It’s about time the Prius did, too. The Toyota Prius Prime combines the best of 2 worlds: electric car power with the ability to drive long range. The Prius Prime is available in 3 trims levels with prices ranging from $27,100 to $33,100. The Prime differs from the regular Prius in a number or ways including the exterior styling. Upfront the car is inspired by the Mirai with the large gills located in the front bumper. The quad headlights are reminiscent of luxury cars. Under the hood is a 1.8 liter Atkinson Cycle 4-cylinder engine. Power output is 121 horsepower. The Prime has a total driving range of 640 miles with the batteries fully charged and a topped off tank of gas. But for short commutes the Prime offers 25 miles of pure electric range. The Toyota Prius – and the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version that’s based on it – has certainly been what could safely be described as "stylistically challenged" since its inception more than two decades ago. Of course, aerodynamic efficiency is to blame, although that does little to alleviate the sort of self-consciousness that can come with driving such a quirky car. After years of derision, the hybrid that introduced gas-electric motoring to the masses has reached the fairy-tale ending to its ugly duckling story – not that it’s going anywhere, with new versions of both the conventional and PHEV versions arriving at dealers right about now. More than becoming the swan this automaker’s engineers always knew it was, the 2023 Toyota Prius Prime in particular adds newfound efficiency to its repertoire along with stunning new styling. After a couple of summer road trips sprinkled on top of daily commutes, it’s time for another Long Term update on our 2021 Toyota Prius Prime. We’ve tacked on an additional 1700 miles, bringing our grand total to 14,600. Truth be told, we haven’t been plugging in as much as we should, resulting in a dip in efficiency—50.2 miles per gallon over the last month or so. Still, our overall efficiency has barely taken a hit, sitting pretty at 57.2 MPG. "The advantage of plug-in hybrids like this Prius Prime is that, while it’s worth it to charge, it’s not absolutely necessary like it is in a full EV. So even when purely electric driving range is depleted, we’re still treated to Toyota’s excellent hybrid system. In fact, unless we’re really goosing it or actively monitoring its operation, we hardly even notice the engine running. And that’s the way it should be in a hybrid." Having the Prius Prime in our fleet, we’re thrilled to be spending less time and money at the pump. Which means more trips and more fun. There's no getting around it. The Toyota Prius is one of the coolest new vehicle glow ups in recent history. Toyota took the absolutely wretched looking last generation Prius and gave it an extreme makeover that didn't just make the Toyota Prius "not ugly," but rather enormously desirable. Let me remind you: we're talking about a Toyota freaking Prius here. I'm definitely interested in putting one in my own driveway after I test the Prius Prime, which is the only model I would consider. Why? It’s been a while since we last checked in on our 2021 Toyota Prius Prime, and we’re happy to say our experience keeps getting better. In a time where gasoline prices just keep rising, our Prime has hit 65.5 miles per gallon of regular over 4,000 miles just since our last update. That brought our total distance up to nearly 13,000 miles and our overall efficiency average to an impressive 58.3 miles per gallon. This generation Prius Prime is nearing the end of its life cycle, but considering it was the first vehicle to ride on Toyota’s TNGA global platform, its surprisingly agile driving dynamics have held up well. On the other hand, the interior is showing its age a little bit. Specifically, the infotainment screen, which lacks the looks and functionality of others even within Toyota’s lineup. Luckily the fuel-saving hybrid technology is arguably the best in the business. We haven’t faced any major quirks or groans; it very much remains the same practical Prius plug-in we took on 10 months ago. And where less frugal vehicles have us leery of summer road trips, the Toyota Prius Prime is brightening up our time behind the wheel, while also being easy on our wallets. The Japanese brand has also unveiled a new plug-in hybrid model, once again known as the Prius Prime. Although it introduces a much better design and a new interior, the Prius Prime's powertrain advancements are even more impressive than those of the standard hybrid. Toyota's second-generation TNGA-C platform underpins the Prime, offering a lower center of gravity, lighter weight, and higher rigidity than its predecessor Prius Prime The Prius Prime's new large 13.6 kWh lithium-ion battery pack is available in the SE, XSE and XSE Premium classes, increasing pure electric range by 76% over the previous generation and increasing the range from 25 miles to 44 miles in the SE class. Increase to miles. The manufacturer's estimated range for the XSE and XSE Premium Class is 39 EV miles. For long-distance travel, Prime relies on Toyota's fifth-generation hybrid system. The system combines a highly efficient engine, generator and electric motor for an efficient driving experience. The Prius Prime's four-cylinder engine produces 150 horsepower and 139 lb-ft of torque, which when paired with the 161-horsepower permanent magnet synchronous electric motor delivers a total output of 220 horsepower. That's fast enough to accelerate the Prius Prime from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.6 seconds, and Toyota still uses the CVT to power the front wheels. The all-new Prime brings a stunning look to the road. It features a sleek new sporty design that is 2 inches shorter, 1 inch wider and 1 inch longer than the previous generation. Its sleek, aerodynamic appearance is provided by a hammerhead nose, low roofline and flared tail. Also, to complete the aggressive look, the Prius Prime XSE class comes with 19-inch machined wheels, while the SE comes standard with 17-inch wheels. The interior of the Prius Prime is as beautiful as the exterior of the car. The Prime's cabin shares design cues with the bZ4X electric SUV, featuring a sleek wraparound dashboard that fits a large centrally-mounted infotainment screen. Gone is the Prius' past center-mounted instrument cluster. Instead, the 2023 car features a cluster mounted directly in front of the , the new Prime's shifter has been moved from the dashboard to the center console. We found plenty of headroom in the driver's seat, but the lower back seat roof made headroom even tighter. The Prius Prime SE and XSE models come standard with an touchscreen infotainment system, although a larger unit is available as an option on the latter. A large-screen system comes standard on the top-tier XSE Premium, as does JBL's premium audio system. All Prius Primes, regardless of trim level, have six USB-C ports and are wirelessly compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The all-new 2023 Toyota Prius Prime plug-in hybrid pushes the boundaries of how sporty an efficient vehicle can be without going fully electric, but as Road Test Editor Brian Normile finds out, it makes the same sacrifices as its gas-electric hybrid sibling, including a smaller interior with lower materials quality, a cramped backseat and lacking headroom; an awkward cargo area; and an inferior infotainment system. Despite interior foibles, however, the driving experience is a big positive. Added power for 2023 means acceleration is brisk, braking is direct and linear, and ride quality is excellent, even enjoyable (we cannot stress enough how strange that is to say about a Prius). Both more efficient and sportier than the rival Kia Niro PHEV, it’s also not as practical or nice inside. While the efficiency is welcome, for all of the Prime’s sporty merits, it’s still held back by some of its inherent Priusness; it’s hard to imagine it swaying the hearts and minds of performance-minded buyers toward a Prius — a GR Prius, maybe, but not this one. Toyota claim 282 MPG and emissions of 22g/km CO2. The Toyota Prius Plug-in can be charged from a household socket in just over 3 hours. This new car is design to run in electric mode for more time. A battery heater means that it can run efficiently in low temperatures. An airy interior provides infotainment via an 8 inch touch screen. This Prius offers a 360 litre boot. The 2017 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid costs from £32,395 with a £2,500 UK government grant. It goes on sale this March.
