It's been a little while since the team sat down to do a video review of an SSD. Mostly that's because there haven't been many worth the effort. This time, Seagate is back with a FireCuda update that leverages the Phison E18 controller. We saw the new controller, NAND and firmware stack as a reference design from Phison and really liked it's potential. Seagate is the first to get this new combo in our lab. The Seagate FireCuda 530 SSD review is here. The question is simple. Should you buy the FireCuda 530 NVMe SSD? I bought and tested the FireCuda SSD 2TB version. The Firecuda 530 GEN 4 2TB NVMe SSD is a beast of a drive. A super fast NVMe drive that gets the job done for both gamers and creators. The real question is about caching and price point. The FireCuda 530 is a fast drive that gets hot and does throttle BUT this is observed through high usage of transfers. So if you are not transferring massive 300-800 GB sets of files then this drive will do the job. If you are, you will be limited in certain ways that I talk about the video. However, if you stay within the constraints explained in this video you should be fine. I will be making a comparison video of the FireCuda 530 vs SN850 by Western Digital. The goal is to point out the different aspects with transfer large files and see the comparison before buying the different drives. This is more for creators and professionals than it is for gamers. If you are a gamer you shouldn't worry too much. Keep the drive under 75% capacity and you are off to the races. The Firecuda 530 2TB SSD NVMe drive is fast. I mean super fast. The drive hit over 7000MB/s on the read and close to 7000MB/s on the write. So I can't complain on the speed. However, I had some issues in day three and it looks like a caching issue with the Firecude 530. Again, my workflow is transferring big data between the drives. I have 2 SN850 1TB drives and a 2TB SN850. There have never been any caching issues. So the addition of this Seagate Firecude 530 2TB would work well in the workflow. So we had to test it out and see the results before keeping it. After transferring massive data there were some major issues where on day three we saw a big issue with the write. I will be redoing more tests after I format the computer and make sure the tests are done to spec. Hopefully it isn't a drive issue or a caching issue. I'm really loving the drive otherwise. No sooner had brands cracked through the 500K IOPS and 5,000MB/s read performance barrier, less than a year later we now have 7,000MB/s+ and 1 Million IOPS drives commercially available and two of the fastest drives available to buy right now in PCIe Gen 4 x4 M.2 are the Firecuda 530 from Seagate and the Rocket Plus from Sabrent. Now, I am willing to bet that 99% of you have heard of Seagate Technology - they have been in the business of data storage in one form or another for a little over 40 years! Whereas Sabrent is a comparatively unknown company, releasing numerous docking stations, hubs, memory card readers and enclosures in the last decade, who have seemingly taken all this knowledge from devices centred AROUND the storage and (presumably using 3rd party NAND manufacturers) designed their own series of SSDs. Despite the somewhat David vs Goliath nature of these two brands in this comparison, I will say that the Sabrent and the Rocket Plus brings quite an impressive range of hardware specifications, performance and choice to the table that challenges Seagate Firecuda 530 in a number of areas, though durability and endurance (as noted in earlier Sabrent SSDs over the years) is truly what let's this drive down a tad. This is Seagate FireCuda 530 1 TB nVME PCIe Gen 4 SSD that comes with a Heatsink. Previously I bought the non-heatsink version of this SSD and tested it. You can check out that video here - Based on that previous testing, I've installed this SSD in slot of my ASUS TUF Gaming X570-Plus Motherboard. There are two M.2 slots on this motherboard. - This one is closer to the CPU socket but doesn't come with a heatsink. - This is near to the chipset and has ASUS's heatsink. In this video we look at stats between the top drives. The Firecuda 530 is a fast drive overall. The Firecuda 530 just like all other drives does overheat. Does it cause a significant issue though? Well, yes and no. In this video I am comparing the top drives specifically with the WD SN850 to see how the big data transfers affect performance. The question is about use case scenario and how it is used based on workflow. The average gamer will not have an issue. The average creator or professional will not have an issue. The only time people will see it in a noticeable manner is when they overload it with data. ie. over 75 percent. In all other cases, someone who transfers daily 500+ GB of data will notice the slow down. So the question just become work flow and use case.
