A step by step guide on how to replace the thermal pads on your Asus TUF 3080 graphics card. I imagine 3080Ti and 3090 would be very similar. Test results are at the end of the video. I decided to perform this modification when VRAM temperatures were sustaining 100 degrees Celsius with the NiceHash Quickminer in Lite mode. Most pads were replaced, but I also added one pad that I connects the top of VRAM heatsink directly to the heatpipes. Upgrade your 3080 FE thermal pads with the far superior Gelid Solutions GP-Extreme Thermal Pads which should bring your memory temps down buy a hefty margin! I used 2mm thick pads for the side with the GPU and 3mm thick pads for the side with the backplate (the plate with the RTX 3080 marking). There is one exception to 3mm pads on the backplate side: there is one fairly large pad on the backplate side, pointed out in the video where I've used a 2mm pad. The original Nvidia pad was very compressed and with the 3mm Gelid pad, the backplate bulged quite a bit and so I replaced it with the 2mm pad. At stock using Nicehash, memory temps were around 106-108c with peaks of 110c at around 23c ambient room temp. After the mod, temps dropped into the mid to high 80s generally 86 to 88 Celsius at 23 Celsius room temperature. When sunlight hit the PC in the mornings and the room warmed up to around 26-27c the card hasn't gone beyond 90c with these pads. After replacing the pads I was also able to crank the memory up +1300 and still hover around 88c Stock was in short supply at the time of filming but managed to get hold of some pads from a seller on Aliexpress after a 2 week wait, ensure you check seller ratings. My seller offered to swap out for some Thermalright pads, which were in stock, but declined and was happy to wait for the Gelid pads to come in. A: If your GPU die and memory chips share the same cold plate, then .2mm less than the size of recommended thermal pads. If your memory die doesn’t share the cold plate (like in this video) then copper plates that are the exact size of your thermal pads will work. Q: How much greater is the risk of shorting components? A: If done correctly? Basically zero. Keyword correctly. If the copper plates are able to move easily, that’s an issue. Q: What about galvanic corrosion? A: There is no risk of galvanic corrosion, so long as you use a thermal paste with no metal particles in it. Yes, some thermal paste contains metal particulate. Why? Who knows! In this video you can see how I changed the stock thermal pads (of poor quality) of my MSI RTX 3080 Suprim X with the high quality thermal pads from: -Gelid -GP-Ultimate -GP-Extreme and some -Thermalright- Extreme Odyssey . On the backplate of the card all the thermal pads are 3,5mm in thickness (height), like you can see in the video. Since I didn't have the 3,5mm size I combined 3mm + 0,5mm, but you can also do 2mm + 1,5mm . On the front of the card, as you can see in the video, you will only need 2mm and 1,5mm thermal pads. You will find all the other sizes in the video. From my point of view this mod is a must! The stock thermal pads from the factory are of poor quality and the GDDR6X memory of the RTX 3080 runs insanely hot, over 90 degrees Celsius! Now after I changed the thermal pads, the temps of the memory do not exceed 76 degrees Celsius in full load! If you are not able to change the thermal pads on your own, take the card to a professional ! .....or do it ON YOUR OWN RISK!
