Dell PowerEdge C1100 Server – In this video, we will provide a helpful "Memory How To Guide." CPUs options will also be covered. We will demonstrate upgrade tips for proper RAM installation. We will provide a thorough review on best practices for configuring your memory modules and a general overview on the different options including sizes, speeds and type of memory supported. Let's begin with the memory! The Dell C1100 runs on DDR3 memory and has 18 DIMM slots. RAM size options include: 2GB 4GB 8GB 16GB or 32GB DDR3 server memory. Speed option include: 1066MHz, 1333MHz or 1600MHz. Please note: 1600 will clock down to 1333. There is only 1 option regarding the type of compatible RAM: ECC Registered (RDIMMs). We get asked frequently… Will Load Reduced Memory work inside my Dell C1100 server? Unfortunately, Load Reduced LRDIMMs is not compatible with the 11th generation of Dell PowerEdge servers. The absolute max configuration is 384GB via (12 x 32GB) DDR3 1600MHz ECC Registered Server Memory. Dell’s spec sheet will show the highest is 288GB via (18 x 16GB). However, we have confirmed 384GB will work and is the true max. The Dell PowerEdge C1100 has two CPU sockets, which are LGA1366. This means the C1100 runs on dual Intel 5500 or 5600 series CPUs. Options include dual core, quad core or hex core. We recommend dual hex core as the price point is low these days. Each Intel CPU supports nine DIMM slots. There are three Memory Channels per proc, which means three DIMMs per memory channel. That is bad news for quad rank memory as it will be effected by the rank rule. The rank rule states 8 ranks per memory channel. This is the reason you can only install 12 of the 32GB modules. Dell yet again brings to the table another high-performing enterprise level server in a clean 1U form factor. In our video, we provide a general overview of the memory & CPU specifications and provide tips on how to get the most out of your Dell PowerEdge C1100 server. We will go over the different types of compatible RAM, speeds supported and DIMM sizes. We will then provide some general tips on how to properly install your memory upgrade. For starters, the R630 is part of the impressive Dell 13th Generation family and is the next generation to the very popular Dell PowerEdge R620 server. As discussed, the R630 operates on DDR4 memory. There are 24 DIMM slots. Speed options include: 2133MT/s, 2400MT/s and 2666MT/s. Please note, that 2666MT/s will clock down to 2400MT/s, which is the true fastest speed. Technically you can install 2933 or 3200, but they will also clock down to 2400 speed. Dell will try to sell the faster speed at a higher price, but really there is no sense in speeding extra money if you don’t need to. DIMM size options include: 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, 32GB and 64GB memory. Note: 64GBs will only work with one type of RAM for the PowerEdge R630. And that brings us to…. What types of RAM are compatible with my Dell R630? There are two types of compatible memory: ECC Registered (RDIMM) or Load Reduced (LRDIMM). With LRDIMMs you can reach a higher overall capacity compared to RDIMMs. The max configuration is 768GB via (24 x 32GB) DDR4 PC4-19200T-R 2400MHz ECC Registered Server Memory. Whereas, the max configuration is via (24 x 64GB) DDR4 PC4-19200T-L 2400MHz Load Reduced Server Memory. PowerEdge R630’s run on dual Intel Xeon E5-2600 V3 or V4 series CPUs. This is an LGA2011-3 processor socket. The highly-configurable and versatile Dell PowerEdge R630 is an upgrade to its predecessor, the powerful R620. The R630 provides a wide range of solutions. You can also put in 2666MT/s modules, but they will clock down to 2133MT/s or 2400MT/s depending on the processor you have installed. With an E3-1200v5 CPU, the fastest speed that your modules will run at is 2133MT/s. A E3-1200v6 CPU supports a maximum memory speed of 2400MT/s. Module capacity options include: 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB. When installing 32GB modules, only two modules total will be recognized by the server. The R330 accepts only one type of RAM: ECC Unbuffered (ECC UDIMMs). The max configuration that can be achieved by the R330 is 64GB via 4 x 16GB or 2 x 32GB. Dell PowerEdge M640 Blade Server Review. In this video, we will review this 14th Generation Dell blade and specially focus on the memory and processors. We will discuss how many DIMM slots, types of compatible RAM, speeds supported, sizes accepted and max possible configuration. We will even install an upgrade and go over some helpful configuration tips. We will also discuss CPU options. Let's get going. The Dell M640 server is the most popular blade from the 14th Gen. There are 16 DIMM slots running on DDR4 memory. Speed options are 2400MT/s, 2666MT/s, 2933MT/s and 3200MT/s. Note the 2933 and 3200 will clock down to the true fastest speed which is 2666MT/s. There are two types of compatible memory: Load Reduced (LRDIMMs) and ECC Registered (RDIMMs). Sizes supported depend on the type of RAM. ECC Registered 4GB, 8GB, 16GB and 32GB. Load Reduced 16GB, 32GB, 64GB and 128GB. Right off the bat, you can see one very clear advantage to LRDIMMs - scalability. You can install a much higher max configuration of 2TB (16 x 128GB) Load Reduced server memory. Whereas, ECC Registered maxes out at 512GB (16 x 32GB). 4 times high scalability. You cannot mix ECC Reg with LRDIMMs. You can mix speeds and sizes. Note: mixing speeds results in all DIMMs performing at slowest speed. Dell PowerEdge M640 blades servers come equipped with two CPU sockets which are LGA3647. They support Intel Xeon 1st and 2nd Generation scalable processors. This is a big step forward from the past generation, M630, which accepted E5-2600 V3 or V4 series. Each CPU controls 8 DIMM slots. There are 6 Memory Channels per CPU, which means there are 4 channels controlling 1 DIMM and 2 channels controlling 2 DIMMs.. White is the first slot in the channel. Black is the second slot. Let's go! A is the first channel, followed by B and so forth. Dell has labeled the motherboard and color coded the slots to make it user friendly. What type of RAM does my PowerEdge R730xd accept. The R730xd accepts two types of RAM, which are ECC Registered (RDIMM) and Load Reduced (LRDIMM). With LRDIMMs you can achieve a greater overall capacity than RDIMMs. For RDIMMs, the max configuration is 768GB via (24 x 32GB) DDR4 PC4-19200T-R 2400MHz ECC Registered Server Memory. For LRDIMMs the max configuration is a whopping 3TB via (24 x 128GB) DDR4 PC4-19200T-L 2400MHz Load Reduced Server Memory. The PowerEdge R730xd run on dual Intel Xeon E5-2600 V3 or V4 series CPUs. Module speed options include 2133MT/s, 2400MT/s, and 2666MT/s, 2933MT/s. Technically speaking you can install 3200MHz (so long as you have a 2nd generation XEON Scalable processor) but these modules will clock down to operate at 2933MHz. It is important to note that the CPU that you have installed will determine that fastest speed that your modules will run at. The fastest speed for 1st Generation Scalable CPUs is 2666MT/s. The fastest speed 2nd Generation Scalable CPUs is 2933MT/s. Module capacity options include: 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB. 128GB can only be used if the modules are Load Reduced memory modules. Dell PowerEdge R240 | This video will cover memory configuration and upgrades for the Dell PowerEdge R240 server and show you how to properly configure and install your memory modules. We will also provide a general overview of the R240 server as a whole. The R240 is part of Dell’s 14th generation line of servers. The PowerEdge R240 is a DDR4 based, single socket 1U server, supporting Intel Xeon E-2100 and E-2200 series processors. The R240 also supports Intel Core i3 8100 and 9100 Series, Intel Pentium G4520 and G5500 series as well as Intel Celeron G4900 and G4930 series processors. The Dell PowerEdge R240 utilizes DDR4 memory and there are four DIMM slots. This system only supports one type of memory which is ECC Unbuffered (ECC UDIMM). Unfortunately, ECC Registered (RDIMMs) and Load Reduced (LRDIMMs) are not compatible with R240 servers. There is a handful of speeds and sizes for the R240. Speed options include 2133MHz, 2400MHz or 2666MHz. Modules with speeds of 2933MHz and 3200MHz can be installed, but will clock down to 2666MHz. Size options include 4GB 8GB 16GB. Unfortunately, 32GB and 64GB DDR4 ECC Unbuffered modules are not compatible with the Dell R240 server line meaning the max configuration is 64GB via (4 x 16GB) DDR4 PC4-21300V-R 2666MHz ECC Unbuffered Server Memory. There are 2 Memory Channels, which each consist of 2 DIMM slots. Dell has labeled the memory channels and they are also color coded. The beginning of the memory channel is the white DIMM slot. This is important if you were only loading two modules, then you would need to install the two DIMMs inside the two white DIMM slots. This will help your Dell R240 server to provide an even load distribution. Otherwise one channel is overloaded and the other channel is not being used. In our video, we will review this in more depth and demonstrate how to actually install your memory upgrade inside the Dell PowerEdge R240 server. The Dell PowerEdge R430 is an enterprise 1U server and packs a powerful punch. In our video, we will review proper techniques for RAM installations as well as how to properly configure memory. To begin with, the R430 is part of the exciting Dell 13th Generation. This is the next gen to the Dell PowerEdge R420 server. Dell R430’s operate on dual Intel E5-2600 V3 or V4 series processors which is an LGA2011-3 CPU socket. These are the same processors found in R630 and R730 servers. There are 24 DIMM slots running on DDR4 memory modules. This is the first generation of Dell DDR4 based servers. There are two types of memory accepted by the PowerEdge R430 server: ECC Registered (RDIMM) or Load Reduced (LRDIMM). Unlike the R630 and R730, ECC Reg and Load Reduced DDR4 will max out at the same speed and capacity for Dell R430 servers. The max configuration is 384GB via (12 x 32GB) DDR4 PC4-21300V-R 2666MHz ECC Registered Server Memory. The max configuration is also 384GB via (12 x 32GB) DDR4 PC4-21300V-R 2666MHz Load Reduced Server Memory. Please note 2666 will clock down to 2400. CPU1 controls 8 DIMMs slots and CPU2 controls 4 DIMMs slots. There are 4 Memory Channels on CPU1 and 2 memory channels on CPU2. Both have 2 DIMM slots per Memory Channel. Dell has conveniently labeled and color coded each DIMM slot. Follow this helpful guide to ensure you properly install your memory upgrades. It is best to always install at the start of each memory channel. The memory channels will start with white in the first slot and black in the second slot. The proper configuration for 2 CPUs would be 6, or 12 DIMMs to maintain a consistent load balance across all your memory channels. In our video, we will dive into the memory in more depth as well as actually install memory modules inside our own PowerEdge R430 server. This system is highly-configurable and can be used as a multipurpose server. The Dell PowerEdge R430 is an upgrade from its predecessor, the 1U R420, and offers a large variety of solutions. The Dell PowerEdge M630 is an enterprise level blade server that goes into the M1000e chassis. In our video, we will provide an overview specifically focused on the memory and processors. We will review how to install and configure memory inside your M630 server. We will provide a few general tips and tricks to make your installation process as smooth as possible. Sit back, relax and enjoy the Dell M630 memory tutorial video. Easy place to start is the beginning. The Dell M630 blade server is part of Dell's 13th Generation and is the next gen to the Dell PowerEdge M620 blade server. Dell M630’s operate with dual Intel Xeon E5-2600 V3 or V4 series processors. This is an LGA2011-3 CPU socket. We recommend the E5-2620v3 for lower end applications and E5-2680v4 or E5-2690v4 for higher end applications. There are 24 DIMM slots. The M630 runs on DDR4 memory. The 13th Gen is the first generation of DDR4 servers from Dell. With the M630, you can utilize 2133 MT/s, 24000 MT/s or 2666MT/s. Do note, 2666 will clock down to 2400 so technically 2400 is the fastest speed. Size options include 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, 32GB or 64GB. There are two types of memory you can utilize with your Dell PowerEdge M630 blade server: ECC Registered (RDIMM) or Load Reduced (LRDIMM). We recommend RDIMMs for lower sizes such as 4GB 8GB or 16GB. However we recommend LRDIMMs for higher DIMM sizes such as 32GB or 64GB. With LRDIMMs you can reach double the overall memory capacity compared to RDIMMs. RDIMMs - The max memory configuration is 768GB via (24 x 32GB) DDR4 PC4-19200T-R 2400MHz ECC Registered Server Memory. LRDIMMs - The max configuration is via (24 x 64GB) DDR4 PC4-19200T-L 2400MHz Load Reduced Server Memory. There are two intel processors. Each CPU runs 12 memory slots. There are 4 Memory Channels per CPU. There are 3 DIMM slots per Memory Channel. The memory channels are extremely important. If you are not loading 24 DIMMs, then you want to make sure you split your DIMMs evenly across the various memory channels. This is very easy to identify. Dell has labeled and color coded to help you easily load your memory upgrades. You always want to start your install at the beginning of the memory channel. White is the first DIMM slot in each memory channel followed by black second and then green third. The proper memory configuration would be in sets of 4 such as 4, 8, 16 or 24 DIMMs to maintain an load balance/distribution across the M630 memory channels. In our video, we will discuss the channels in more depth and we will actually load and upgrade our M630 server. The highly versatile Dell PowerEdge M630 is an upgrade to its predecessor, the Dell M620, and will work for a wide variety of applications such as hosting and virtualization. The Dell PowerEdge R820 is a 2U server that supports 4 x Intel E5-4600 V1 & V2 series CPUs (LGA2011 socket). The R820 is a Dell 12th Generation server and is the next gen to the Dell PowerEdge R810 server. There are 48 DIMM slots utilizing DDR3 memory modules. You can configure your R820 server with two types of RAM: ECC Registered (RDIMM) and Load Reduced (LRDIMM). With ECC Reg, the max configuration is 1TB via (32 x 32GB) DDR3 PC3-12800R 1600MHz Server Memory. However, LRDIMMs offer 3 times the capacity with a possible 3TB via (48 x 64GB) DDR3 PC3-12800L 1600MHz Server Memory. The reason you can only put in 32 x ECC Registered is due to the fact all 32GB DDR3 ECC Registered modules are Quad Rank. The R820 has 3 DIMM slots per memory channel. If you load 3 Quad Rank ECC Reg DIMMs into 1 RAM channel, then you break the “Rank Rule” which only allow 8 ranks per memory channel. The white slots are the start of a memory channel while the black slots are the end of the channel. There are two DIMM slots per channel. Each CPU controls 12 DIMM slots. Module speed options include 2133MT/s, 2400MT/s, and 2666MT/s, 2933MT/s. The CPU that you have installed will determine that fastest speed that your modules will run at. The fastest speed for 1st Generation Scalable CPUs is 2666MT/s. The fastest speed 2nd Generation Scalable CPUs is 2933MT/s. 3200MT/s modules can be install, but will clock down to the fastest supported speed of the CPU. Module capacity options include: 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, 32GB, 64GB, 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB. 128GB can only be used with Load Reduced memory. 256GB and 512GB can only be used with Intel Optane Persistent Memory. The R640 accepts three types of RAM: ECC Registered (RDIMM), Load Reduced (LRDIMM), and Intel Optane Persistent Memory (PMem). When using Intel Optane and Load Reduced memory, you can achieve an overall greater RAM capacity. With RDIMMs, you can achieve with a configuration of 24x64GB. With LRDIMMs, you can reach 3TB with 24x128GB. Finally, with Intel Optane, 6TB can be reached with 12x512GB. Dell PowerEdge M915 - In this video, we will provide a general overview of the M915 blade server, specifically focused on Memory and Processors. Learn more about the types of RAM accepted by the M915. We will also cover the max configuration and different sizes & speeds accepted. We will go over several memory configuration tips and tricks, and at the end we will even install a memory upgrade. We will also review the various memory channels and how to identify start of the channel. Sit back and enjoy! Let's begin with memory. The Dell PowerEdge M915 blade server accepts only 1 type of memory, which is ECC Registered, also known as an RDIMM. There are 32 DIMM slots running on DDR4 memory. Speed options include 1066MT/s, 1333MT/s and 1600MT/s. Please note that 1600 speed DIMMs will clock down to 1333MT/s which is the true fastest speed possible with the M915 blade server. DIMM size options include 1GB, 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, 16GB or 32GB memory modules. 64GB DDR3 modules will not work with the PowerEdge M915. This means the max configuration for the PowerEdge M915 is 1TB via 32 x 32GB DDR3 1333MT/s ECC Registered server memory. Load reduced memory is not compatible with the Dell M915 server. Buy your memory upgrades through . Regarding the processors, the Dell M915 is based on AMD. There are no Intel CPUs for this server. You can use AMD Operton 6100, 6200 or 6300 series processors. There are 4 CPU sockets, which is a G34 socket. Each CPU controls 8 DIMMs and there are 4 memory channels per processor. There means each memory channel has 2 DIMMs per channel. You can identify the start of the channel through the colors on the DIMM slots. White equals the start of a new channel. Black equals the second slot in the channel. This is especially important if you are not loading up 32 DIMMs. Let's say you are putting in 16 modules. Then you want all your DIMMs in the start of each memory channel, the white slots, skipping all the black slots. The reasoning here, is you will maximize the performance of your M915 by spreading the load across each channel equally. The M915 is a great blade server for virtualitzion. Dell PowerEdge R300 Server Memory - In this video, we will review the different memory options for memory speed, size and type. You will find a good review on best practices for loading & installing your memory upgrades and a helpful general overview. The Dell PowerEdge R300 is a DDR2 based machine with 6 DIMM slots and is a 1U rackmount server. The R300 is a Dell 10th Generation server with 6 DIMM slots utilizing DDR2 memory modules. There are 2 speeds: 667MHz and 800MHz. 667 is most prevelant. There are limited choices on DIMM sizes: 512MB, 1GB, 2GB and 4GB. 8GB DIMMs will not work and are not supported by the Dell R300 server. You can only install or configure your R300 server with ECC Registered (RDIMM) memory modules. ECC Reg is the only type of memory supported. Fully buffered, FBIMMs, will NOT work with the R300. Do not purchase DIMMs for Dell 2950 and think you can install in R300. They are two separate styles of memory. The max memory configuration for Dell R300 is 24GB via (6 x 4GB) DDR2 PC2-6400P 800MHz ECC Registered Server Memory. There are 3 Memory Channels per CPU. The R300 has two DIMM slots per memory channel. The memory channels will be color coded. White will be the start of the memory channel. Black is the 2nd DIMM in the channel. We recommend maxing out at 24GB. This machine is pretty old and you should consider upgrading to a newer model if you are running a business environment. If at home and looking to have some fun, then this will be a decent homelab server to play around with. With LRDIMMs you can achieve a greater overall capacity than RDIMMs. For RDIMMs, the max configuration is 512GB via (16 x 32GB) DDR3 PC3-12800R 1600MHz ECC Registered Server Memory. For LRDIMMs the max configuration is via (24 x 64GB) DDR3 PC3-12800L 1600MHz Load Reduced Server Memory. The PowerEdge R720xd run on dual Intel Xeon E5-2600 or V2 series CPUs.
