BUY NOW TS-453Be: TVS-872XT: TVS-872N: TB3 Cable: 10GBe Adapter: D-Link WIFI Adapter: COMPANION VIDEOS Which RAID?: QNAP Tech Day: TVS-872N Review: TVS-472XT Review: TS-453Be Review: In-Depth Setup Guide: CLOUD BACKUPS G Suite's Business Plan offers Unlimited Storage: SUMMARY A NAS allows you to connect multiple computers to storage at the same time, they also contain their own processor to do work for you in the background without needing to hog the resources of your current computer. So for example you can get them to backup your data to the cloud and scan the hard drives for errors and viruses - allowing your computer to focus on your work at hand. TS-453Be The cheapest NAS presented here is the TS-453Be which is great as a first NAS and unlike units from other manufacturers it contains a PCIe upgrade slot to allow you to install a SSD/10GBe expansion card when you need extra speed. TS-453Be: TVS-x72XT The current kings of NAS at the moment is the TVS-x72XT range containing the fastest connections built in and a powerful 8th gen Intel processor to handle the fastest performance - yes performance is improved with a better processor. TVS-872XT: TVS-x72N A budget range of the TVS-x72XT which excludes 10GBe and Thunderbolt 3, however depending on the deal you can find - over in Australia I've found them listed at some retailers A$1,000 cheaper than the XT range, so for a value deal you can grab one and use one of the PCIe slots to upgrade to 10GBe yourself and you're set. TVS-872N: WHAT IS RAID RAID0 - Uses all drives to create one large storage space. RAID5 - Uses one of the drives for protection in case of drive failure - so you don't use all your data. RAID6 - Uses two of the drives for protection - better safety, slightly slower speeds. THUNDERBOLT 3 These NAS drives are easy to get up and running, however the hard drives in NAS systems are noisy and the current longest cables you can get are only 2 meters in length, so while it's great for temporary usage, I recommend using a 10GBe ethernet cable with a Thunderbolt 3 adapter instead - that way you get up to 100 meters in length. Cable: Adapter: 10GBe The current standard in performance speed, while you'll only get these speeds with 4 or more hard drives operating at RAID0, with a fast enough processor, it's a good idea to aim for these cables as they go up to 100 meters in length and as you grow out your system your speeds will improve. Cable: 10GBe to TB3 Adapter: thunderbolt+3+adapter WHY NOT A DAS? They hog your computers resources, only allow one connection at a time, and the cable length is limited so they can be a very noisy solution. WHICH HARD DRIVES? I've been using Seagate Ironwolf Pro drives for the past few years, they have large capacities at fast operating speeds. Seagate IronWolf Review: WIFI All NAS systems I've used require a direct connection to a router or a WIFI dongle to connect to the internet. Connecting to the internet is a security risk, however if used cautiously with good security practices, it is great for accessing a NAS from both over the Wifi or over the Internet when required. The QNAP TS-464 NAS Drive Review - For those looking at making the move away from cloud platforms and towards their own private server, the new QNAP TS-464 NAS ticks ALOT of boxes. Arriving as the latest release in their long. long-running flagship series of Prosumer/SMB hardware (following the TS-453D, TS-453B, TS-453A, etc) around every 2-2.5 years, this new system is easily the best iteration of this tier of their portfolio they have ever released. That shouldn’t be a surprise really, as the rest of the hardware industry improves in power, performance and efficiency, you would expect each release to be better than the last anyway. In software, despite the brand providing its complete OS level platform, services and applications in QTS, the brand has suffered something of a tumultuous 18+ months with a spate of ransomware attacks and vulnerabilities leading to confidence in the platform being shaken. Seit zwei Wochen habe ich jetzt hier testweise ein QNAP TS-253 Pro rumstehen. Zeit genug mal ein umfangreiches Vergleichsvideo aufzunehmen und klarzustellen, worin sich TS-251 und TS-253 Pro tatsächlich unterscheiden. ## Fazit Mein Fazit ist relativ deutlich. Das TS-251 macht alles was ein TS-253 Pro auch kann. Interessant wird ein TS-253 Pro nur dann, wenn man vor hat mit Virtual Machines zu arbeiten oder wenn man mehr als 2-3 Nutzer im Heimnetzwerk hat, die regelmäßig Streamen, Daten austauschen und sonst das NAS belasten. Für die Normalo-Familie reicht das TS-251 vollkommen aus. Auch das Thema Transkodieren bringt einen klaren Geschwindigkeitsvorteil beim TS-253 Pro, der aber auch vernachässigbar ist, wenn man das NAS mal übers Wochenende rödeln lässt. :-) Letztendlich muss man selbst entscheiden, ob einem die 90 EUR Aufpreis wert sind. Ansonsten sind aber beide Geräte eine feine Ergänzung für das Heimnetzwerk und durchaus einen Blick wert. Intel CPU for the win sag ich da nur.
